Mechanically, to-wound rolls of Chamon Battle Magic has nothing to do with target's Toughness (and Chamon spells have no Strength), you just roll target's own armor as a to-wound roll. So it's near-useless against lightly armored archers, but devastating against gromril-clad dwarven troops.
That's only wargame mechanics, not something to be taken at face value about effectiveness of spells. White hot stream of metal in your face definitely will hurt even if you are unarmoured.
Though, in WHFP4e game mechanics Chamon spells ignore and add AP of specifically metal armour to damage. Probably metal armour could pass and amplify damage of Gold spells to some extent, but it makes no sense for this to work on non-metal armour or not to damage unarmoured targets.

Asarnil is a mercenary who has worked with dwarves before, so I think he knows how to avoid stepping on anyone's toes here, and likely has unique insights to offer.

There's a lot at stake and it's Mathilde's responsibility to do everything she can to make sure the Expedition is a success. Part of that is making decisions like this, and passing the buck on them is an abrogation of that responsibility. Besides, Asarnil's a mercenary, he won't take offence to being told who his point of contact is.
With this quote, I'm more on the the Wizards and Asarnil.

I should note that what matters is how annoyed Borek is by Asarnil, not average dwarfs. Basically, would Asarnil expressing his opinion push Borek away or towards doing something Borek really doesn't want to do? It could easily be negative ("typical Elves, trying to destroy another Dwarven Karak", etc). So we don't really want him in the Council.

Yeah, I've been convinced.

I wanted Asarnil under our official command since we're probably the individual he'd be most likely to listen to and because I wanted to grill him about Anton. The former is not saying much and the latter we can do no matter what.

Asarnil is a big boy who can make his own decisions and I expect Deathfang to reign in the worst of his hybris.

I think it is best to focus on what Mathilde is best at. While she can attempt to speak for the others she has some experience leading troops but not a lot in a situation like this.

Just want to be sure we don't end up leading all three. That's too much.

And really. [] Lead the Wizards only
Really?

We're going to be busy during a lot of this expedition - scouting, concentrating on Rite of Way, or doing the Ice Witch sidequest. If we can't properly dedicate the time towards a command role, it's irresponsible to take it.

Unless Borek or Asarnil have commanded in battles before Mathilde is the most experienced person in the Expedition by some margin.

She's got the destruction of Castle Drakenhoff and the first day of the final battle for Karak Eight Peaks as sole commander and she's been in multiple war councils.

There are sooo many fun statements the QM could throw out.

"Her moment of temptation was after the death of Abelheim van Hal, when she saw what power even the incompetent can gain through dhar. She's learned a lot about necromancy since".

"She met her doom a long time ago"

"She's acted as the avatar of a god of destruction in a dark ritual, and was granted a great reward for it by her god"

"It was by her fathers hand that the last empress died, and by her god's will that the new empress was crowned."

"Mathilde first met the empress in Sylvania"

"She has baptized the crown prince in the name of her god"

"She knows the tongue of the Skaven"

"She has a divine artifact with four facets"

"She once assaulted a stronghold alone, and the occupants slaughtered each other rather than face her"

"She has a daemon trapped in eternal torment to collect its ever flowing blood"

Honestly, when the QMs try to tantalise with such statements, I treat them like Fey.

Sure, its the truth, but its so abtract and deliberately phrased there is no way it is the truth
