The border princes are fucking cowboys.
I mean, yeah? The land's always been pretty rubbish for crops, so pastoral farming is what most resort to for sustenance. There's a reason why Gunndred, God of cattle rustling, canonically gains a sizable following there (not helped by his other spheres of blackmail and brute intimidation being the style quite a few Princes rule with).

But doesn't she want the tithe reduction? I mean, she is characterized as greedy, paying a lesser percentage of her income sounds like something a person who really cares about money would really want.

Spending years of study to reduce one's taxes by 5% needs to be weighed against however much increase in income those years of effort can garner elsewhere.

(Also wait she hit a growth spurt in the last four years, how fucking young was she when she showed up at Karak Eight Peaks? Or did her Arcane Mark fuck with things until she forced the issue calorically?)

Other way around. If you've got an Arcane Mark making you awkwardly proportioned, then your body is going to try to maintain those proportions even if you alter your body shape. Because it's not actually a physical mutation, it's the physical manifestation of an altered soul.

For the Indic book, I'm surprised it wasn't already translated, given that it was in the Elementalists' library.

For books, I support buying a bunch with our own money. If we want to make big purchases in Lothern, a few hundred gold here and there won't make a big difference; we should take the Ithilmar action.

I want to save money so we can go wild buying magical curiosities whenever we get to the Ulthuan trip.

Well this socked me in the head with a softball bat.
Probably would surprise some people who know her too if she's got the thing where its hard to place her age kicking in like some greys and other wizards get.
If she does have that she might actually seem to be aging more normally to dwarves than most humans do.

Can we buy flint glass to make a welders mask looking thing? It would be useful for looking at too bright magic.

She probably also learned creative accounting from Mathilde, by putting various monies under each of her titles.

She probably doesn't have anywhere near the same leeway as Mathilde - for obvious reasons.

Poor Sofia. It's hard to feel out of control of your own life, and harder still when the only avenue to asserting that control is to do dangerous or self-destructive things. I've seen relatives go down that path and been powerless to help them; I hope that the example of the Wizards of Karak Eight Peaks, and Panoramia's guidance and support, leads her to happier trails.

I have to admit I was a bit worried that Panoramia isn't going to be sufficiently invested in Sofia's well being due to her own issues with the more mainstream Jades... but it does very much seems that she knows what Sofia needs.

Posting this before reading the latest chapter.

AFAICT if nobles want to get paid for fighting (beyond loot that is) they join the State Troops, which are probably barred to Wizards
Why would Wizards be barred? Isn't it a mainstream path for Bright Journeymen?
do we know of other types of Waystones used by other networks? Are Nehekhara's not elf-derived?
Didn't Jyn Ryvia make a whole list of known unusual Waystones? Or was that someone else? Also, at least one Nexus that we've seen, the one in Ostermark where we met that priest of Taal I think, looks more like massive Tributaries than like anything Elven.

She does have some leeway in that, as a warlady of the Border Princes with no real intention to ever go back to Altdorf, she can at this point fairly easily cut ties with the Empire and suffer little blowback so long as she doesn't actively make herself a problem.

If she fudges some numbers a bit on her tithes, it will likely get noted and then ignored until the Amethysts have reason and opportunity to pursue it. 10% of most of what she's making and a hand on her leash is better than 0% of any of it and no leash short of Magisters Vigilant kicking over the most successful Empire-friendly sandcastle in the region.

Gretel took the "Understand your arcane marks" action.

The answer to Gauntness was "omnomnom"

I would think she has much more leeway.
1) No vow of poverty. The only financial restriction the amethysts have is giving up their inheritance.
2) Not working directly for the Empire: Unlike Mathilde under Abelhelm. As long as she doesn't cheat the Dwarfs, no one is going to audit her in the border princes. I don't think the dwarfs care if Gretel is not paying her full Tithe.

Haven't caught up yet, so this might have already been pointed out, but that conversation with Sophia was amusingly reminiscent of Mathilde's first real interaction with the Bursar-

"Not the first windfall you've come into," she notes.

"No, Lady Magister. The Memoirs of Asarnil proved unexpectedly popular."

"I assume you did take the usual Vows at some point, yes?"

"Yes, Lady Magister."

"We do rather focus on how funds are obtained. Our own dear Ulgu could make quite a terror of any that put their minds to the acquisition of wealth, as I'm sure you're aware. I'm likewise sure your acquisitions will remain benign, and there will be no need for any of those little loopholes to become a noose." She taps the silver with a fingernail. "This isn't a warning. If we didn't have faith in you, you would not bear your current rank, and truth be told the silver will come in handy - our wedding present for the Emperor was not cheap. This is simply a reminder to help you retain that faith we have in you. As the Wolfship captain said to the midshipman: if a fish jumps aboard there's no point throwing it back overboard, but don't get so used to the taste that you find yourself baiting hooks. Is that clear?"

"Yes, Lady Magister."

"Lovely. I'll be watching your affairs with great interest. Oh, and if you could do me a small favour?"

"Yes, Lady Magister?"

"Do tell Magister Johann to stop playing silly buggers. He can poke at the ratties if he really must, but it's unseemly to play pretend with our allies."
