I really don't think Gelt could be considered average in anything.

She also started very young. To my understanding, Gelt was an adult before he joined the Gold College.
He was an adult before he joined yes.

I was just pointing out that Mathilde has been a part of the College for a long time and her joining young is actually a point in her favor since she's more connected with them and should have greater loyalty.
Basically what I'm saying is that we very much qualify for 'proven and seasoned' as well as 'skilled' because we have examples of other wizards who have sufficient skill managing to be promoted despite having actually spent less time as part of the college.

[X] Scout the rest of the Eight Peaks, to find out what other horrors are waiting out there.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with its reconquest, as a Spymaster focused inwards.

[X] All this time away has made you miss your friends. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.
This suggests a future in Stirland, whether Roswita likes it or not.

[X] Write a series of papers on the magical phenomena you witnessed. Or better yet, get your Journeymanlings to do the actual writing.
This suggests a future of investigation and study at Karak Eight Peaks, and perhaps helping Johann poke at Skaven technology.

EDIT: GAH

Alright um, no posting while slightly sleepy gotcha
also these are the options that interest me the most, I don't really think Mathilde fits the mayor position (we're too hands off-y enough to our lands) since we love running around swording everything with our scary sword

[X] Join Karak Azul as they raid and scout in force the other portions of the Karak.

[X] You could help the Undumgi and the Ulricans establish themselves.

[X] There's a lot of prime real estate currently unclaimed. Stake out a prime position for a wizard's tower.

[X] You've been out of touch for a while. Head to Barak Varr and then Altdorf, and catch up with what's been happening in the Empire.

Personally, I'd rather we not juggle spymaster, research, and mayor at the same time. Only so much day/moonlight you know? I'd prefer if we just catch up with friends before going onto our new job rooting out fungus and rats with research on the side.

That said, I still wouldn't recommend trying to fan the flames of democracy. That sort of thing is why Ranald gets suppressed.
That's like saying that you wouldn't recommend sharing and furthering the goals of one of the four cornerstones of Ranald. In other words, completely sensible, but worshipping is never completely sensible, and even less so if the object of worship is Ranald the Whole.

More seriously, aren't there already monarchies in this world that have vassal cities with officially non-hereditary rulership? Like, say, free cities of the Empire? Or member cities of various Tilean polities?

Also I thought I read somewhere that the Elder of the Moot is elected, though I may be mistaken or have that info from a non-canon source. If true, then Belegar already expects to have a vassal democracy. If not then I'm curious how the local Halflings will organize themselves, seeing how Titus is a wartime leader and doesn't seem to have a noble title.

Lastly, do Dwarves even have something equivalent to peasant rebellions? I guess the closest would be an alliance of minor clans all agreeing that their direct liege did something Grudge-worthy while said liege, local leaders and inter-Karag authorities disagree due to bias/lack of evidence.
In any case, Belegar might not automatically hate it if his weird manling subjects do weird manling things. Especially if he can't point at known examples of human leadership structures due to there being no nobility or singular religious authorities presiding over the human forces. Otherwise he would already have organized the Undumgi into some form of clan and expected them to follow Dwarf law on all things.

But why would we pick an option that has us go back to Stirland, when we have to basically spend years overcoming the obstinacy of Roswita? There is much more good we can do for the forces of Order in Karak Eight Peaks, then plunging right into Imperial Politics and official obstructiveness that focusing on Stirland implies. We can easily check up on Anton and Wilhemina on our next diplomatic/academic visit back to the Empire, especially if we are going to help King Belegar in external relations. We budgeted at least five years with the Eight Peaks, so going back to Stirland in just three months just feels too soon.

We can travel back and forth in three days on shadowsteed by word of Boney.
Yes exactly, it's a six day long round trip over somewhat dangerous territory. Not exactly something you perform on a whim. Over an entire turn swapping between one location and the other is easy enough but it's not something you want to do to pick up a book.

As an example let's say Mathilde is trying to enchant a sword with Mockery of Death so that when it hits a target it applies the spell. If she was in Altdorf she could consult with a fellow wizard or look in the library. If she's in Karak Eight Peaks that's not really a viable option and she'll have to rely on the local resources if she doesn't want to lose a hell of a lot of time.

Alternatively let's say she want to deal with the Middenland-Nordland conflict. She needs to set up spies, consult with fellow wizards, probably get a position on an Elector Count's council and perform lots of personal searching and interaction. Due to the time it takes to move between Karak Eight Peaks and the Empire she wouldn't be able to easily perform this investigation if she's still performing duties in Karak Eight Peaks.

Mathilde has been a Grey Wizard for 18 years. Gelt was only a Wizard for less than 15 before he became Supreme Patriarch. There's also been Magister Lords who managed to get promoted from Magister to Magister Lord in 2 years.
Mathilde is actually pretty good as far seniority goes.
Huh...do you have a good source for more info on Gelt and his timeline for that? my google fu is weak :p

I wonder what new nickname the dwarves will give us? As is, dwarf friend is a little too generic considering our accomplishments.

Because I really love the dwarves.

Even though I'm not super attached to Stirland anymore, we should at least visit.

Wizard Tower is the absolute best for finding a very secure place for the Liber Mortis, buuuut it kinda feels weird for Mathilde.

Ranald the Protector is not Ranald the Democracy Crusader. If Belegar starts being a tyrannical despot then by all means Ranald would be all for liberating the Undumgi from that. The Halflings negotiated for their political indepdence from the start and have a system of governance in place already. Deliberately eroding the feudal hierarchy is an entirely different matter.

Theoretically it's possible for a civil war to develop among Dwarves, but the Clan system is a good safety valve - a single bad King can only do so much damage before word reaches the High King, and when he puts pressure on, a King that won't back down is a King that will be removed by his own Clan because he's sullying the honour of them all. That there's not been a bad High King raises an eyebrow, and it's an open question whether it's an unbroken string of good luck or whether the Throne of Power is pulling some strings.

Huh interesting. My take away from that would be that its a combination of luck and the Throne of Power, and Dwarven psychology being inhuman enough in the right ways that that kind of social pressure of being the High King smooths away any willingness they'd have to take acts that would label them as a Bad King.

Don't the dwarfs also elect the High King? If so then that is another safety value for preventing bad high kings.

@BoneyM sorry if you've already made a post on it, but what's the difference between a Internal and External Spymaster and could you edit your answer into the update? Because based on the difference people might swap their votes.
