I don't really think the We are going to be a very friendly library staff that serve as the basis for a long term institution. They can move books around, sure, but will they be able to properly assist users of the library? Will they go out of their way to help people hunt down knowledge? Will they be loyal to the idea of perserving knowledge, not for themselves but for future generations of species they have nothing to do with?

These are very alien minds and I don't think they'll produce a library that is good and useful for humans, dwarves, and halflings. It seems like a "cool spiders" choice rather than that they will make good librarians in what is ultimately at least half a service position.

I think we should keep in mind he kinds of priceless treasures we are going to be putting in this library. There will be books in there on necromancy and vampires, magic books that could be misused, dwarf books that reveal parts of their society they do not want to share with most people. All in all I would rather those books be safe than having the maximum smiles coefficient. I mean just the magic books alone, who would you rather have guard those, random humans who might be tempted to do something silly or the spiders with no capacity for or interest in magic?

There are solid practical reasons for the spiders, also they are cool

[X] Cython

First of all, prestige isn't bad to have for a library. If we want a reciprocal agreement that allows the copying of books with for example the Ancient Library of the Light Order, I can't imagine anyone many people better to negotiate it than Cython. Also, a lot of long term security, and having a Dragon take a personal interest into your library will make him more willing to help you getting more books to make his "hoard" grow.

Fundamentally I don't want to have Cython as librarian because this is Mathilde's book hoard, not Cython's and I don't want Cython to decide to fly off one day and take it with them.

The We I am less opposed to and mostly comes down to not wanting to force people to deal with arachnophobia when dealing with the library, but if its a question of spider librarians or giving our book hoard to Cython I will pick the giant spiders any day.

The issue of them flying off one day with it all would presumably be addressed in terms of their employment oaths. So it comes down to if we can trust them to keep their promises. Personally I think we can, and we're already trusting them to keep an even more important agreement in regards to the territorial agreement. I also think giving them more buy-in to K8Ps increases the likelyhood they keep to those kinds of agreements.

But it does still seem a fair concern.

Y'know, I find the idea that the we will probably end up as really good magic theorists despite not having magic due to reading tons of books on magic over the centuries rather entertaining.

How do you hold a Dragon accountable if they decide to break their oaths?

I do have to say though, the best flex wouldn't just be dropping a set of Orbs on the Patriarchs' desks out of nowhere. It would be doing that, and then turning around and asking them to get another Powerstone so we can do the second batch immediately, just to prove this wasn't a fluke.

The We and Cython are now in the lead. Although Locals could conceivably win if people started voting for it.

This is something that everyone but Verenans, Runescribes, and Collegiate would need training to be capable of.
I worry that this might functionally be "trying to have ogre + eat onion", but if Local/Orphan/We or other such group win, will we be able to get a small core of professionals to assist or at least act as trainers?

It would be hilarious if we took the powerstone making lesson, and then a few months later came back with an Orb of Sorcery. The look on Algard's face would be priceless.
We have to do this. We can't possibly not do this.

My current idea is there'd be a 'use CF to do it and have the Orbs of Sorcery to do with as she will' option and a 'explain what the plan is to the Colleges, get them all to chip in a power stone, and then rewards (if it all goes according to plan) but no galaxy flex moment' option.
I'd much rather Mathilde flexes into the Stratosphere with those gainz she's been working on since Stirland, than ruin the surprise!

Haven't we gotten enough done that we can Write The Book on AV now? Power Stone Interactions was one of the last things gating that I thought?

Just dropping that on the desk of Dragomas and departing with a T-Pose would probably make things very exciting.
We've still got subjecting AV to Power Stone creation methods to go. Given that it will be several turns before we can afford the 8 Power Stones we'll need, that lines up pretty nicely with doing that and then writing the book for maximum prestige.

As for the vote, I'm pretty swayed by the We's hivemind and immortality. They won't be perfect from the get-go, but they won't be lacking time to learn, and neither is the library.

Other than the spiders, the Runescribes and Verenans seem like safe choices. I don't like Cython as a choice, because if he decides to move on a few centuries down the line that would get very ugly.

Well firstly they will not and secondly with an army, they are a dragon not a god.

You attack it, negotiate, or write if off. Same way you do with any other agreement breach. Dragons are not invulnerable. They're strong, so the "Write it off" portion is larger than many other entities, but it's not the entire possibility space.

We are talking about the same dragon who single handedly destroyed Clan Skyre army based in K8P, right?

Personally I don't think there's any threat of Cython running off with the library one day. Thanks to Mathilde it's come to realise that other scholars can offer unique insight and knowledge in regards to it's ultimate goal. If it had never engaged with her. It'd never have learned about the Dwarven Gods, The Halfling Gods, the halflings themselves and much more. Plus it seems to enjoy the conversation, having sounding boards and people to point things out. Stealing the library would ruin it's chances of further scholarly interaction in quite a large area. When it could just retire if it really wanted to and come back as it pleased to chat with new experts. Plus stealing the library means it stops growing when leaving it means it'll gain new knowledge over time.

It'd really gain nothing from stealing the library as far as I can see. Except a pile of books to sleep on... which... well okay. Maybe it does have a few reasons to do it, but it also has a lot of reasons to not and Cyhton is a very practical, reasonable* being.
