Truthfully if we can dissapear him for questioning I would want to capture him. Getting the source of his magic learning would help Empire a lot. Kill him. And the cult that backed him is still out there to try again.

Also I like this investigation episodes. Perhaps after our current job we can take an Empire job that has us do more of this.
The main problem with make Alberich disappear plan is that it would risks Heidi.
Now, it might be worth the risk, and it might be worth blowing Heidi's secret to find out the source of Alberich's learning.
But personally i am not convinced of it.

[x] Kill: Branulhune
Go for sword, it's flashy, deadly, and unlikely to burn down the city.
It's a win/win/win/win.
We protect Heidi, which is a win.
We protect the empire, which is a win.
We keep Alric from getting too much credit, which is a win.
And we don't burn down the city or kill loads of bystanders, which is a win.

[X] Kill: Branulhune
Attack here and now, bisecting both sedan and Magus with a single swing. The crowds will complicate matters, but at least they are a known variable.

As said above, unless Mathilde kidnaps such herself, we do not want him pontificating. Further, trying at all bears a bit too much risk for tastes.

Going for the kill...
Nearly all options presented are sudden and surprising. What makes me favour this, however, is three considerations more:

- Very few protections indeed line up well against a Strength 10 runeblade.
- Even if somehow not sufficient to kill in one swing, Rune of Superior Skill makes any magical protections and items on hand inoperable. Might be we are not the only ones carrying shenanigans here. Teleport trick? Idol to boost the hypnosis aura? Best remove the consideration.
- A cleanly cut carcass serves as much better proof than some random pile of ash. Even if Mathilde has the authority to identify, questions always might quietly linger. Not everyone likes Wizards.

On making sure this is the real Alberich: if memory holds, once the ritualist is killed a ritual he is performing is disrupted. So once we kill this dude we can go and double check the ritual targe

This kills the crab porters

I mean, my greater concern with this one is, can we even do this without setting a significant chunk of city on fire?

Considering the situation and nature of the target

Mathilda/InquisitorWitch Hunter: It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

[X] Kill: Dragonflask

If we are going to do this, might as well go all in overkill, the collateral damage is potentially lesser than a drag out all out fight with a demon.

The dragonflask is tempting, but I'm kind of wondering something about it, and, honestly, I have no idea how on or off base that could be.

Alberich's rituals have, thus far, been long stretches of quiet followed immediately by a sudden massively over the top act on the day itself, and one mirroring the murder of the Haupt-Anderssens.

If we use the dragonflask, then suddenly, Alberich, as the man at the center of the ritual, will himself will die in a massively over-the-top manner on the day of the ritual itself. it won't mirror the actual history, but it will have some parallels with the rest of the general progression of events.

Thus, the question: Mathilde has accidentally performed counter-rituals before. Is there any risk that this act, via following some of the theming, might accidentally play into the Chaos ritual that's presently going on?

Don't take chances with the Empress' safety.

Intelligence? The Longshanks will happily interrogate his porters, trace his path and search his hideout. The man himself is just a bonus, and too dangerous of one.

Kill him, now, without fancy tricks.

When it's a former Elector Count fallen to Chaos, Algard absolutely would stonewall Alric to keep that secret buried. This is the sort of nightmare scenario the Grey Order was made to make disappear.
I forget that there are multiple gigantic secrets layered ontop of each other in this case. It must give Mathilde a happy feeling to be in the know for them.

Wouldn't the Dragonflask also catch the porters in the explosion?
Mathilde will try to avoid this, since it would reduce the amount of force hitting Alberich.

I mean, my greater concern with this one is, can we even do this without setting a significant chunk of city on fire?
Mathilde would pick her moment to minimize the risk of that.

I think we can safely assume we'll be using Dragonflask with as literal collateral as possible, likely none at all. Also, the Dragonflask is the overkill option here and I'd rather not take any chances with an agent of Chaos, even if he hasn't completed the ritual. Kill it with fire.

I think all the kill options work well and the capture or follow actions are not worth the risk of messing up capturing or being spotted while following. I don't think the opportunity of getting information from him is worth risking him escaping or being interrogated and revealing something about Heidi. The dragonflask would be spectacular but we might learn a little bit about what his plans were if we stealth kill him with the daggers. If we kill him with the sword but capture the porters we could still interrogate the porters to find out where they were supposed to take him.
