I like poetry. But I also like Liang He.

"Xuan Shi, are you content with watching?"

His pause was even longer. And when he spoke, he looked at her. "No."

...

"Would Miss Ling show this one the steps?" she was startled a little when he spoke again.

The subtext on this gonna get me to swearing.

"Are you content with watching?"
Meaning 1: Are you content with watching the dance at this party right now?
Meaning 2: Are you content with watching the major events happening in this province?
Meaning 3: Are you content with watching me?

"Would Miss Ling show this one the steps?"
Meaning 1: I do not know how to start dancing. Please help me enjoy the dance/party as part of it.
Meaning 2: I will consider joining your group if you are there to show me how I can help.
Meaning 3: I want to be more active in your life, and I still want to become more than friends. I stumbled when I tried before. How do you wish to be courted?

Likely Meaning 4: Is he content in just sitting out event and letting it pass him by. As for the other yeah he want's Qi to take lead in a dance.

I will be happy with either, and in classic greedy girl fashion, I want both. :p

Ma Lei is the other Ma sister yea? Maybe we can recruit her into a subordinate clan. I think we talked about that earlier. Cause I expect the that ... Well I suppose that if Gun Jun doesn't have much in the way of family, he'll marry into the Ma.

Mmmmm.

The Ma Clan is pretty high up on my list of organizations to recruit to add to our fief. Cause that'll give them time to build wealth while under our umbrella, and that's pretty safe when we have so many power houses kicking about. So at least temporarily we could have the Ma hanging out with us.

Maybe the Ma Clan will get the Valley, cause they don't have debt to the sect iirc?! Ma Lei wants a puppy, Ma Jun is a very woodsy cultivator, we have puppies (soon^tm) and we can offer Zhengui's services to the valley. And we can supply their potters/ceramic makers with stuff from our mines! And buy their pottery and ceramics in a close range fief to fief trade.

Of course, if Guangli manages to tempt them fully to our side, I am also very okay with that. Though I can definitely see the Ma Clan becoming a Cai baronial clan, anyways. Just like to have them even more aligned with CRX and us.

I'd really like to hear what's going on with the locations we didn't choose. Just to see if we're getting neighbors we know. Or if our neighbors are already starting to do some work.

(I'm still hoping for the 300+overflow feature of the fief to be a spirit stone mine.)

The last vote was the kind that is frustrating regardless of the outcome.
Now I'm left wondering what secret lore and plothooks we could have uncovered if we went to the Starlight Labyrinth with Xuan Shi.
Of course, if that option had been chosen I would want to know what we could have learned by diving into the Dream with a literal nightmare.
I still preferred the Labyrinth, but there are many reasons for Xuan Shi to be assigned to our diplomatic group anyway. So many that it would actually be weirder for him not to be.

Man, that conversation with Xuan Shi sure was awkward. It perfectly represents interacting with someone we want to genuinely help and be friends with, but they have a romantic interest we don't reciprocate. So we have to act with caution to not give false hope nor unintentionally take advantage of them.
I'm not one to participate in ship wars, specially as I find it weird that "we" decide who Ling Qi ends up with, or how much time she ends up doing romantic activities with said person.

I'm glad the Luo issue ended in an amicable agreement, even if it's true that it came a little out of nowhere. I have never been really invested in exploring the Luo culture, not with the depth we are doing with the Meng, Wang, Diao and a bit of Bao; so I have no real problem about not having a "peer" Luo in our diplomatic group. Besides, it's not really a bad thing to have an adult overseer that it's both (relatively) approachable and supportive, or at leat open minded, of the operation.
A mutually beneficial business relationship, with a public if not enthusiastic support to the summit, is exactly what I hoped to establish with the Luo until everything really starts to kick in.
Speaking of which. I agree we should assign Ling Yu Nuan to go over the seeds, cattle and hounds that the Luo are going to send us. They are going to be the same the Luo use in their southern reaches into the Wall, so Yu Nuan should be familiar about how to best use them and what care they need. It would also be a great way for her to start getting involved and invested into the fief development as a "Ling clan member".

Now into the vote. If the question was where I want Ling Qi to go next, I would choose the poetry. I'm one of the people that want to contact again with the Ma sisters, and Ma Jun is there.
But the objective is to help Xiao Fen and her friend to mingle and make useful contacts. The best way to do so is to introduce them to an environment they are interested in and can contribute and benefit from, not to satiate Ling Qi's curiosity about how Xiao Fen interacted with people in the Outer Sect.

Also, @yrsillar , regarding the advancement of the Home Concept. Could it be possible to add the previous descriptions of the Concepts in the Cultivation menu? Maybe in spoiler boxes? I think it would be interesting to be able to see the evolution of the different Concepts in Ling Qi's mind.

Exactly!! I think exactly the same!!!

@CedeTheBees made a Google sheet containing all previous concepts. The link is pinned in the number_channel on Discord

It doesn't have the Concept insight we got from our latest story telling when visiting uncle skellington for instance. There were 2 because we rolled so high.

Time moved forward, always forward, and never back. Things aged, they changed, they warped, they rotted. They Ended. New things wore their remains like macabre cloaks, and pretended at reversal

This was an new understanding of Endings, yes, but it's not an insight. Endings I was 0/2 before Skelunckle. It's now 1/2. It didn't level up.

Bulli is most effective when they let their guards down.
Perhaps the real weapons were the friends you made along the way.

He considered her words silently. "A sojourn into the unknown then, a strange journey. Let it be seen where the road goes."
Xuan Shi chooses chaos. Good.

More seriously, I do wonder where we'll end up. Could be the dream journey latches onto him and we get something reflective of his past or something. But it could also just be a rando adventure, and it's arguably more fitting with the conversation they had and his desires if it's at least tinged Emerald Seas. Sampling the tales of the new, from his side of things, basically.

Not sure how likely it is, but it's possible poking around the Bleeding Mountain liminal exploration target could fit the bill. We don't actually have any firm narratives or goals going into that one. It's related to the trade road quest, but only because relevant lore will drop from the adventure. Pretty sure that and Xuan Shi could be handled at the same time without doing a disservice to either. Exploring the past of the province, from an age of strife and heroes, with Xuan Shi would probably be pretty neat even.

Whatever yrsillar's got in mind is probably rad, though.

"Because I've treated you shabilly, and you can help us," Ling Qi replied, not dressing her words up.

"This one has received the kindness he deserves, dreaming so thoughtlessly," Xuan Shi chuckled.
The lack of self-worth really hurts to see.
"The last volume was not here, did you know this Lady Ling?" he asked absently, looking up at the fire, the music and the sound of voices nearly washing out his words.

"The Elder never finished his books then?" Ling Qi said.

Xuan Shi nodded. "A small disappointment."

Ling Qi considered that, and the people here, the spirits and disciples alike, she considered the Sect itself, and everything that had happened here. "Stories don't have to end to be precious I think, or rather, they don't end as long as someone remembers them."

If there was one thing she felt she had learned, it was that histories, stories really, grew like bamboo, putting forth new shoots with every teller and listener.
Make spinoffs!
That is the way!
"I want to apologize for some of my words and thoughts by the way."

"After so long? There are many who would call it more rude to call up forgotten slights," Xuan Shi replied.

She glanced his way. "It would have been false if I apologized before."
The awkward part of a Truth insight is that you cannot offer an offense that you didn't genuinely feel.
And that means being unable to take it back until you change your mind for real.

Which admittedly adds a lot more punch to an apology, but that depends on the other party being willing to listen by then.
He considered her words silently. "A sojourn into the unknown then, a strange journey. Let it be seen where the road goes."

"Ever, ever onward, to step back is death," Ling Qi replied lightly.
He turned his head, squinting at her.

Moving forward was not an abandonment of the past, because the past couldn't be abandoned. It was always there, on your back, whether you wanted it or not.
That sounds like Insight Resonance. Except you can't read through Xuan Shi's pokerface.
She was leaving this behind, the Sect, many of these people, but a home did not have to be a grand or eternal thing.

+2 Home XP Home concept advances to II

Home is the people you gather, and call your own.

That was the lesson of Tsu, she thought, the one muddled and forgotten. When the tribes came to Xiangmen, they were not bound by blood or culture or duty or law, not then. They came in desperation, but that is not why they stayed. Tsu bound them and made of them a people, without any of those things.
Home is not a permanent thing, its something to look back to, but it is something that must be constantly reinvented and renewed to fit the people that form it.
It isn't a place, unless the place is also a person.
"Miss Ling's thoughts run deep," Xuan Shi said.

Ling Qi laughed. "It's the opposite. I'm told they wander around the sky."

He nodded as if that wasn't a jest at all.
There aren't any hidden depths here, she's just picking up weird things in the wind.
Ling Qi watched the fire and the dancers for a long moment. Itt ook her awhile to work out the words stirring in her mind. "Xuan Shi, are you content with watching?"

His pause was even longer. And when he spoke, he looked at her. "No."

She understood the shades of the silence after and frowned, calm despite the crawling feeling up her spine. She didn't understand that, after everything, why would he still be interested in her?

"You're really bad at seeing yourself still," Sixiang sighed.
These two self-worth-issues aaaaa
"Would Miss Ling show this one the steps?" she was startled a little when he spoke again.

She breathed out, there was nothing to fear here, this cheerful communal dance had been chosen specifically because there wasn't even a hint of untowardness. Partners switched with each revolution around the bonfire, it was as much ritual as anything else. "Certainly. Maybe it's appropriate, this dance represents the passing of seasons. Shall we start over, no obligations or expectations?"

For a moment, he honestly looked like a man braced for a blow that never came, off balance and out of position. But he recovered and took her meaning, she thought. This was no kind of promise. "Most agreeable."
A fresh start. Awkwardness left behind. Expectations born of narrative and trauma discarded.

She smiled and offered him a hand.
It was a lively thing, the bonfire dance, arm in arm with a partner you spun and kicked and stomped in time with the music as you made your way around the fire. Xuan Shi was not as clumsy as he put on, even if he was awfully on edge.

Not that she could blame him, it wasn't like she was fully comfortable either, but surrounded by other people clearly less troubled than she it was easier to fall into the mood of the crowd.
The lessons of the Reverie! To unwind and become part of the crowd!
They spun through a revolution and parted, Ling Qi catching onto another female disciples arm, while Xuan Shi caught onto a laughing Gun Jun, who obviously didn't recognize him.
Gun Jun "Who's this guy?"

It IS kind of hard to imagine Xuan Shi at a dance like that.
Especially when it turns out he CAN dance.
And Ling Qi found herself arm in arm with another face she recognized. She hadn't noticed his restrained and muted qi in the crowd.

"Miss Ling," Luo Zhong greeted, tipping his head as they locked arms.

"Sir Luo," she greeted neutrally not missing the steps.

"This is an impressive arrangement, and you've learned the steps well, I could have been of assistance," he said quietly, almost unheard over the surge of the music and the stomping of feet.

"I had practice in working things out on my own," Ling Qi replied, her gown flaring out as they spun. "And this is Wang Chao and I's arrangement."

"Of course," he replied.

"And now it is his. I hope there will be no misunderstandings about that," Ling Qi said. In the end, you could not be friends with everyone, and it was foolish to try. She could not always be reacting, deflecting, waiting for offers. "It would harm my trust greatly."

She knew who her friends were, and who were merely contacts.

"Of course, it is rude to upstage your host," he agreed, tilting his head as they came around to the second half of the circle.
Well marked territory reduces unnecessary conflict!
"It is," she agreed. "Seed livestock and watch dogs, low grade stock for now. That is what would aid our arrangement the most."

"Easy enough for my Luo clan. It would be helpful if we were able to observe the event, as the Meng will," Luo Zhong replied.

"You?" Ling Qi asked. He was referring to Meng Dan no doubt.

"My Uncle, you have met him?"
Ling Qi thought back to a scrawny and grizzled old man in an animal hide cloak, speaking in cryptic riddles at her first year end tournament. "Acceptable, though Lady Cai has the last word."
Observers are an easy ask. The more observers the better for us, because the multiple points of view and vested interests are a pure good, it makes it harder to twist the outcome and less likely for any one observer to interfere negatively(coz of all the other observers)

Getting seed livestock and starter spirit hounds are great for Yu Nuan to manage later.
Its one of those deals where everyone is better off:
-The seed livestock are a trivial expense to the Luo, and usually go to waste regardless, barring the best lineages(which aren't being asked for), the cost is mostly the logistics of getting them there.
-Getting in early as an Observer gives the Luo something to smug about to the other players, and likely with both Meng and Luo observing already there'd be soft pressure to get in or be left out.
-Getting good herd animals that don't need too much babysitting and yet aren't too difficult to actually USE as livestock(without awakening or otherwise becoming too intelligent) seems like a pain in the ass to do from scratch.
They reached the end of the circle and split apart, her arm caught back onto Xuan Shi's.

"Miss Ling is well?" he asked. His steps were smoother now.

"Well enough, one more circle then?" Ling Qi said.

"Once more, the spirit can take no more," Xuan Shi said self deprecatingly.

"People take practice," Ling Qi agreed with a chuckle.
Takes one to know one!
