That makes me wish we hadn't tosses Sun at the end but fine, the old Monarchy lives on reinvents itself some, gaaah…
Glad I'm more at a remove then I used to be but sometimes I feel like SV just loves to drink that drama juice and shades of gray.

Oh god so Shenhua really didn't fuck up when she first met Renxiang. She intentionally broke her to implant the idea of The Throne is Wrong into a six year old so that it would manifest in adult Renxiang as doubt in Shenhua's infallibility which in turn would be the origin of Renxiang's eventually opposition to Shenhua.

"Your humble daughter can only apologize for her failure," Cai Renxiang said, lowering her eyes. "Ling Qi is trustworthy. She has my full confidence."

"If she was not, the memory of me she encountered would have reduced her to ash," mother chuckled, as if laughing over a minor jape. "You have chosen well with that one at least."
What is she referring to here? I went back to skim the chapter from our dream with CRX and I don't remember encountering a memory of Duchess Cai,

Wow that was intense. Also just her memory is enough to kill us, wtf! And uh is she planning on like toppling the great spirits or something? When she tries to ascend will it be her personal invasion of whatever is up there?

Here's the relevant bit

Ling Qi could feel the power crushing down on her back, could see Renxiang looking over her shoulder, pain turning to terror in her eyes. She saw it without her eyes, for what were such pitiful mortal organs in the face of the Tyrant?

Radiance, radiance beyond description. A light that scoured and bleached and crumbled. Ling Qi felt the breath driven from her lungs, and her hearts beat quicken to near the point of bursting. She saw truth unfettered by the thin mask of human flesh and languid wit, the light of creation creation and destruction in all it's terrible glory.

Witness the implacable and infinite. Behold the Tyrant Progress, whose breath is the end of kings and whose hands are the builders of thrones.

She felt Cai Renxiang's shoulders shake under her hands even as the world was consumed in white. She saw the shadow of a workshop through tear and blood blurred eyes, walls of resplendent cloth and the tools of a weaver and tailor, wrought of the wood and metal of gods. She stood horrified/laid screaming upon the loom. She felt bile in her throat/She felt her flesh unspun. She heard a child scream/She felt fingers like merciless razor edged shears plunge into her soul, severing some threads to lie on the floor and forth other strings of black. She felt threads of herself wound round a spindle, prepared to be woven into a half finished gown of gold and white.

She saw the Tyrant pluck gleaming threads of diamond and adamant from her own self, and pass them through the eye of the embroidering needle.

It was the echo of an echo, a child's memory of pain and incomprehension, made as clear as it was only by the nature of the liminal. She knew that the tiny fragment of the Duchess' truth she had witnessed was just that, else she too would be broken.

She knew that the light failed to truly scour her only because it was filtered through a child's memory. Even as the taste of acid burned her tongue, she did the only thing she could think of. Ling Qi stepped through the dream, and wrapped her arms around Renxiang, the real Renxiang, who stood frozen before her.

Revolution. That is about as bad as you can get as a center. Evil, Madness, etc at least has stability which want to remain as is. Even War can has some stability by doing it with some small nations.

Revolution however?

Revolution is a turning point. It literally can't stay for long. By making it a center of your being it makes you want to topple down something continuously even if it's something that you make during your previous revolution. Even worse, Revolution is not something you do to others. It is something you do with your own country. So Shenhua can't satisfy her urges to Revolutionize something outside the Empire because it isn't hers yet. It just never ends.

VIVA LA REVOLUTION!
So this does confirm some theories about Shenhua. First I think this is the closest we have seen to the true psyche of a top cultivator. They are more a set of instructions than human. The imperial standard for cultivation is about conforming to great spirits, which are just the daemons that kinda run reality. They are powerful but inflexible in their goals. Two, I think that Shenhua is self aware. There was previously talk about how she cheated her way into white and I think that cheat comes with retention of some human traits. However the mix of human traits and Great Sprit power (cosmic corruption?) has caused her to become insane. Therefore her children are her failsafe. Now I'm much more interested in what Tianli's purpose is. CRX is the sword that will cut her down in the end when she eventually replaces heaven, but Tianli is probably a rebuilder? Lastly we get a little more insight into Shenhua as a person. I would love to see her origin story because it would make for really good Xian Xia. Core concepts such as revolution are formed under very tough conditions, usually as a response to trauma and abuse. The set up of the room is also very meaningful. Does she genuinely trying to make CRX comfortable? She clearly understands the mental trauma her daughter is going through, so is the room a continued mockery of the trauma or a attempt to fix it? Again the Kill la kill themes are running through the background but I'm always expecting a twist. Ohhh this is so exciting. DOWN WITH THE HEAVENS!

You know, maybe this is why Diao Linqing hates CRX. She's literally meant to kill and replace her mother. The woman Linqing loves.
Damn, just had to make the whole thing even more tragic. Honestly that level of extreme, tailoring herself to overcome the oppressive and cancerous Hui and being left in this state. A legion of likewise ruthless automatons fueled by a desperate need to fight injustice. A generation grown in the shadows of such broken figures...

And then the image of Linqing standing in support from the beginning to see the rise and even being a partner through the creation of the end and just watching the eventual executioner's blade grow. Like Renxiang was always tragic and I felt the same about Shenhua but you've got me crying for Linqing now too so kudos.

What an amazing moment, CRX realizing part of what her mother wants from her .... and It's not pretty.

+1 to near death encounters by LQ ... I didn't realize it back then, but it makes sense. We know even the memories of whites are extremely dangerous from the bloody moon dream.

The Duchess stands, and looks upon you still staring ahead, blood trickling down your chin to stain the shift you wear.

"I will continue to break traditions. I will continue to change the world, even as my favor runs dry and the wrath of the people turns against me. Tomorrow even I will make my next step, no doubt angering many across the Empire. I am not sustainable. Something must replace me," Cai Shenhua said thoughtfully.

...

"The thrones of heaven await, Renxiang. I shall look forward to whether it is your hands which topple them,"

Yue Shu said it best:
The child born in the dark knew better. That was the secret they had been given at the feet of the star. It was not enough to destroy the wicked. For they too were wicked in their way.

Their replacements would be better.

Mommy Cai knows she needs to be replaced. I just hope we have 2 or 3 centuries to prepare for that one ...

This brings up an interesting question. Shenhua literally cannot stop herself from overthrowing existing authorities (including herself, at this point); given what is and will be a part of Ling Qi's domain, what sort of restrictions might she have?

History is full of bourgeois revolutions, and considering LQ's political opinions I can't say she's anywhere near to inventing communism. She loves being an aristocrat, sees nothing wrong with this way of the world, and will at best tear down some old families and push in some meritocray that will promptly get rigged/optimized to allow for maximum social reproduction of the upper classes (especially in a setting where you can buy performance enhancers for money).
I am not talking about LQ. I am talking about CRx. With all her talks about clockworks and everyone having their place contributing to society. Anyway I understand there were hundreds of revolutions and honestly any form of change in government is revolution. It is irrelevant if it is communism or democracy or oligarchy or something else. Its just I am on a Russian classic kick right now. And it is the first thing that came to mind.

Linqing to Shenhua what Lingqi is to CRX. Someone who is desperately trying to break the cycle of abuse and tragedy that is going in the Cai family. They both know that their respective lieges are going to sacrifice themselves for the "greater good" so it's up to them to control the collateral damage and try to stop some of the self destructive tendencies ofthis mother-daughter pair.

So she's a White who's built her Way around the concept of Revolution, the unending struggle to dethrone greater powers to change the world.

Anyone else deeply concerned what'll happen if she Ascends and her truth becomes Law? She probably won't, she'll probably be killed before she makes it there, but still.

I'm still left somewhat confused about the answer to CRX's question: why did the Duchess traumatize her as a child?

One answer I think some of the comments above suggest was that the trauma was the goal; to get the newest Cai to resent her and try to overthrow her in the future. That conclusions seems... unsatisfying to me, frankly. It doesn't feel like a good fit for what we've seen of the Duchess. It doesn't feel cunning, or ambitious; it just seems almost caricature-esque evil.

I have a different explanation in mind, though it also isn't a perfect fit. A lot of the images we see pertaining to CRX's trauma involve her mother putting her together: "The loom, the needles, the shears". But it is worth noting that this all happens after CRX is "broken", which in turn happens because she "saw the truth of heaven and was broken by it". Perhaps imparting this "truth of heaven" is the point.

Though I'm not sure what that "truth of heaven" is. Is it the Duchess herself, and her nature, all directly revealed to the 6-year-old CRX? Or is it something about the nature of Great Spirits or the world that the Duchess is rebelling against now? In the former case, does that mean that when the Dutchess says "HEAVEN IS WRONG", is she talking about herself?

"And when the Great Spirit once called Cai Shenhua slew all the other gods she did not weep, nor did she turn upon herself. For she knew that she had not changed the nature of the world by her acts, and the real work had only begun.

And so she struck at the very laws of the world itself; that their shattered fragments might be reforged by her hand into something that held the possibility of being a world worthy of those that would live in it."

I wonder what the next step is? What is the next revolution?

Cultivation itself, or cultivation itself + even more of the rules of the world. Or at least, cultivation as it is now.

I'm not kidding, I think she wants to rewrite how reailty itself works. And ngl, that is a total mood right there
