Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
He is definitely not covering himself in glory in the topic no. He may be picking up the wrong signals and reading unintended messaging from a likely autistic individual who has invested a lot into social disengagement techniques and assuming a lot about the feasibility of his approach.

Certainly Qingling's statement on him being the only suitor out of many to offer her any respect for her abilities suggests that he may even be above average for the group they are in.

Lou Zhou is bugging our best friend's girlfriend, so I'm not particularly well inclined towards him. But the idea that he has done anything to LQ in particular that's worth getting a dander up about is laughable.

Above average, in that he recognices her abilities as a cultivator, which makes the average level somewhat impressive in their ability to burrow so deep and not explode from all the impurities.

Harassing our best friends girlfriend is not enough?
Also i maintain that his behaviour at the party was lowscale shitty.
Nothing worth a grudge, but definitely enough to make me not want to spend anytime around him outside work.

Luo Zhong literally said the he thought Qingling had changed her mind (because she showed her face an an event).
"She appears at a public event, organized by and for someone else, therefore she obviously is now agreeing to my courting."
I have no words that would not get mods mad at me to explain just how, bad, an excuse i find that to be (we have also talked about that earlier).

There are a number of potential reasons for why Luo Zhong is behaving as he is, being terrible at social interactions is possibly the least bad.
I don't think that is the reason, but that argument is not going to go anywhere.

edit-

We are, however, seemingly quite eager to explain and/or excuse his actions.
He might be a sociopath, more personable than average Xianxia young master, or just a shitty teenager with more ambition than sense, personally i don't care.

We do need to talk to him, not because there is any reason to think his actions are anything but terrible, or that i consider him as a person worth our time, but he is a Luo, and we want to get along with the Luo, so ignoring Luo Zhong when he comes calling, no matter what our personal opinion of him is, is unlikely to be a good idea.
On my side, I was responding to the definitive negative interpretations presented by offering alternative explanations - I added my last comment to ensure that I don't make the same mistake.
With Luo Zhong's comment I interpreted that to mean that Qingling showing herself at a social gathering is a thing unheard of. Thus one possible explanation is that Zhong made an initial offer and was rejected, with Qingling appearing to have zero intrest in politics - which was what Zhong's offer is. Thus when Qingling appears at a political event it gives the appearance that she is now interested in politics and thus might make different decisions about previous political offers.

Of course there are other explanations, but I think that these alternative explanations are enough to stop people automatically dismissing him as an awful human being - certainly before we have heard his side of the story.
On a personal note @Valmond the attitude that I am reacting to is not your attitude - we both acknowledge a scale of explanations, with mine being more generous r.e. the upper end - but you have been a common poster in this discussion especially of those who make substantial arguments.

Oh it is. But LQ holding a grudge over the party would be very dumb.
Sure, and she's not.
"Luo Zhong had not left her with the best of impressions, though she didn't think him malicious."
Is literally what Ling Qi thinks of him. And it seems pretty decent take to me.

I do get some joy out of the fact that Wang Chao finds himself in a situation where Luo Zhong has to come to him to talk to us, when all Luo Zhong had to do was not be an ass for one evening and we would probably have kept attending his events instead of making our own with Wang Chao.
Partly because i don't like Luo Zhong, but mostly because i like Wang Chao and his blunt earnestness.
Like how when we introduced Zhengui to him as our little brother, he just went "sure" and started calling him Sir Ling, that, was the moment i decided i like him, and so far he has done nothing to make me doubt that decision.

edit-
Out in the field, Wang Chao had leveled his pike at Zhengui. "Let us begin then! Sir Ling, I will give you a five count to prepare yourself!"

Ling Qi blinked, referring to Zhengui that way… Wang Chao was taking her claim of him as her little brother kind of seriously wasn't he. She wondered, was that actually a thing she could do, legally speaking?
Adding the quote, the whole scene is pretty good and worth a reread.
We should look into the adding Zhengui to the clan rolls, Bai do it with their kin, but then they are the Bai, not sure if we can do it ourselves, but we definitely should find out.

Possibly their head is firmly secured in their rectum?
A common occurrence among young masters.

Rereading older chapters and the discussions thereof.
It's kinda funny how Luo and Wang impressions have changed from our first conversation at the party.
"Quite right," Wang Chao said, shaking his head. "I cannot speak against your musical talents, but that part at the end of the duel was a bit vicious to use on a countrymen, wasn't it?"

Luo Zong scoffed. "She displayed the virtues of a noblewoman of Emerald Seas. Beauty and grace sheathing a swift and fatal fury, there is no need to be soft when an Elder is overseeing matters. If anything, her duel cleared some of the doubts the first competition raised."

"My opponent gave his best against me," Ling Qi replied carefully. "I would not do him the insult of holding back out of pity."

"You will find that your lessers do not generally know what is best for them," Meng De replied. "In the future, consider using the superior judgement that your cultivation and position affords rather than simply catering to foolish pride."

"You'd get mad if I yanked that ones underclothes up over his forehead, huh?" Sixiang whispered.

"Thank you for your advice, Sir Meng," Ling Qi said, giving no outward indication that she had heard Sixiang.

"...Leaving that advice of yours aside," Wang Chao huffed, shooting Meng a disgruntled look. "It occurs that this is a rare opportunity. You must be aware of the foul rumor that has begun to spread around your house already, Miss Ling. Might you want to address the matter?"

Despite her best efforts, Ling Qi could feel her expression hardening a little. "I am merely rewarding loyalty. Those who were friends to my Mother and I when we were in low position deserve that much," while she might not remember them, her Mother did see them as friends, and that was enough. "If the Liu family is truly in such difficult straights, I would be happy to discuss recompense for recruiting some of their citizens."

Luo Zhong smiled thinly at her, while Meng De simply shook his head in a condescending manner. Bian Ya shot her a sympathetic look though.

However their responses all stilled when Cai Renxiang cleared her throat. "I find myself disappointed, but not surprised that to find those who obsess over petty nonsense, even in my own province. It is unfortunate, but I trust Ling Qi with the maintenance of her own household."
Luo Zhong managed to be reasonably friendly, even supportive, while Wang Chao was, at a first glance, somewhat less so.
Though on further examination (and even more so having come to know him a bit), Wang is not quite as much of an ass as he seems at first.

Kinda sad now we did not get to see Wang Chao and Bai Meizhen talking, even if i enjoyed Bian Ya and Ruan Shen lowkey flirting, and think that the friendship made there has been not only useful, but enjoyable addition to our social circle.

Also, i had completely forgotten there was a Meng among the disciples.
That only leaves Diao and Jia unrepresented, unless i have forgotten them appearing, though i assume they will at minimum have some vassals attending.
And raises further questions on why have Meng Diu come check on us and ask for a favour.
Is Meng De not trusted? Was Meng Diu just curious? Was the issue too important to be left to a child, no matter how gifted or trusted? Was Meng De's poor interactions with Ling Qi seen as a problem?

I'm currently thinking it was mostly Meng Diu being curious, but i doubt that would be enough to have her travel from the capital to the sect on its own.

edit2-
With Luo Zhong's comment I interpreted that to mean that Qingling showing herself at a social gathering is a thing unheard of.
Related to previous edit, we have witnessed Bao Qingling attend atleast 2 Cai parties, both of which Luo Zhong was also attending.
First was before the hunting party, where she gave us the letter from her brother (turn 4 arc 3-3), second one was after she had started dating Meizhen and we saw Luo harrassing her (turn 8 arc 4-11).
So not unheard of, still probably very rare, if increasing now that Meizhen is dragging her to concerts and stuff.

Not really that important, but still worth noting i think.

Considering how Meng De reacted to Ling Qi's statements in that scene, if he was approached by the Meng as a whole for the opportunity, man probably sent back a letter with at least one word:

"No."

I get the impression he does not like Ling Qi's position regarding martial valor and pride, or her defense of her household vis a vis noblesse oblige, as his statements suggest his interpretation of the concept are a little more detached from reality than Ling Qi's are. This suggests he's a traditionalist/conservative trying to uphold the "better" parts of Hui courtly doctrine.

Honestly, my big wish for the next several scenes is to steal as many people we like away from the sect into our little project that we can.

STEAL ALL THE CULTIVATORS! SOCIAL LINKS EVERYWHERE!!!

If your clans representative at the duchesses court sends you a missive telling you to do a thing, sending back a "no" seems like a very poor career move unless you have a fairly strong backing from another faction.

Also i very much doubt anyone at this point would be tryingto uphold Hui anything, or atleast refer to it as Hui.
It is possible that the guy was from another faction and so was not given any orders, but him going against orders from the top leadership of the clan, yeah, doubt it.

While i would love to do this, i suspect that we will have very limited success in this area.
Most of our social group can't just up and leave, will not up and leave, or are not that useful.
We'll get Gan Guangli and Bai Meizhen, but apart from them, i have hard time imagining who we would realisticly recruit.
Yu Nuan maybe? If we choose to pay her debt, but even then she'd probably be helping with our fief.

We don't know what the Meng's internal factions look like, but it's a near-certainty that one of them is founded on hating the Bai above all else. Given that Ling Qi was critical in bringing about a working alliance between the Bai and the Cai, he probably has their backing.

It's only recently that we've even brought the Meng as a whole to "neutrality" towards Ling Qi - and that probably looks more like one or more Meng factions liking us, balanced by one or more disliking us.

Considering his position is very much a "looking down from above" one concerning people of lower rank, which holds heavy parallels to how the Hui behaved, I consider it a certainty that the local conservative position doesn't refer to it as "like or of the Hui", and would consider the accusation a grave insult. Because the idea behind the accusation appears to be the truth, and it likely would get them into a lot of trouble within Shenhua's court, especially considering she's still consolidating power and removing corrupt or unsuitable people from her court.

As for the Meng investment in Renxiang, you asked if Meng De was unsuitable for opening contact because of his issues with Ling Qi, and them having mutually irreconcilable differences in their perspectives is a recipe for disaster as unless Meng De is Renxiang's type and can use that attraction to overcome the strength of her and Ling Qi's relationship, he's going to be unable to forward Meng interests to any real degree. So sending back "No." as the only response would be bad, sending "no, I'm unable to really press for our advantage in that arrangement," is a completely different matter. I wrote the statement I did that way, because I think it's funny.

Politer alternatives to sending back a flat "No":
  • lol no
  • git rekt scrub nub
  • Alors, c'est la guerre (this one's for my history homies)
  • What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated as the first-ranked Inner Disciple of the Argent Sect, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Hui holdouts, and I have over 300000 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare (by the Zheng, obviously) and I'm the top Young Master in the entire Meng Clan. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this giant xianxia world, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over a communications art? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of Empty Men across the Emerald Seas and your Way is being broken right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your dantian. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the Cai item spirits and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

Apocalypse alert, someone suggested a vegan to go eat a steak! Take out your umbrellas and get ready for the shit-storm...

I object. Largely because taking Suyin from the sect would be a terrible disservice to her.
Eh. Maybe should ask her and let her decide if it's a disservice or not.

I really don't like that some have decided what's best for other characters without an offer even being made.

It's kinda self-defeating.

No...it...literally is a disservice to her. Like....just look at all the facts here. Suyin is a crafter focused cultivator that is getting all her funding pretty much given to further her brand new field of study. Is being given special attention by the sect ( which is basically a university ) is very likely to become an apprentice to an elder and be given 1on1 lessons from a high lv cultivator .

Is literally sitting on a treasure hold of estoric supplies (the underground) which she is using to further her craft.

Has access to the university (sect) library. Has access to minions ( outer sect and some inner sect ) to be lab assistants and provide her with other tools she might need for a certain research or equipment she cant readily make herself .

And is relatively safe inside the sects mountain compared to out in the field or on the border .

Like...can you honestly say our diplomatic mission could provide the same level of opportunities as she currently has. Not to mention the prestige of doing it mostly on her own merits and not under the cai

Crafters mainly Suyin ones needs immense funds and materials to keep around which were incapable of providing.

Clothing type or medical ones be easier but only one we able to support is red or yellow type.

No...it...literally is a disservice to her.
She's a big girl that gets to decide things on her own.

At the very least, not bringing the choice up is Ling Qi deciding what's best for her.

If she wants to stay, it should be her call. Not LQ's. Not giving the choice, even if you consider it a non-starter, is the disservice.

Everyone should at least get the chance to say yes or no, even if the answer is going to likely be no.

By the same reasoning, if she wanted to come, she doesen't need us to invite her, as if she were totally incapable of doing things on her own. If she were interested, she would ask. There's a reason we don't go inviting all the people we know of. Heck, why don't we invite the elders of the sect or the duchess? It's because they are not interested in coming with us to our barony, they have a better rig elsewhere. It's exaggereted, yes, but it's the same situation with Li Suyin. Only, perhaps if we asked her, she would feel compelled to come based on our friendship, even though it would ruin her future.

Do you think it's fair of us to impose on Suyin like that, when we could simply not ask her and avoid all the mess? If she really is interested, it's not as if she cannot ask us about it later. There's no need to complicate things now and invite every single person we know to our barony, only those who have a reasonable chance of agreeing to join and have good prospects there.

Turn 12: Arc 3-4
"I'd thought of trying to convince you to come, but I never thought you'd seek it out," Ling Qi's voice rang out sourcelessly from the churning mist in the ruined cavern

"And why not? I have every right to attend the gatherings of my peers," Meizhen said imperiously. She stood upon a raised platform of stone, surrounded by a clear air. Where tendrils of mist crept into her sphere, it grew dark and heavy, drizzling to the ground in fat droplets of rain to join the rippling pond of black water that had formed around her.

"Well I didn't think you thought them peers for starters," Ling Qi's echoing voice chuckled. The mist shifted and rang with a cold aria. Ice spread across the black pond as freezing wind whipped the air.

Ribbons of metal flashed and skirled, and the flexible blades captured the wind guiding it to the ground where the pond erupted ted into an expanding line of spiky ice. A twitch of Meizhen's wrist sent the ribbons out, hissing like serpents as they punched holes in the mist, tearing apart shadowy phantoms. "There is no harm in being polite."

"You've changed," Ling Qi laughed, and her laughter became a hoarfrost wind, closing from all sides.

"I would hope so," said her friend, smiling lightly before she disappeared behind the snow and hail conjured by Ling Qi's song.

The mist rippled and withdrew as Ling Qi landed on the uneven ground in a crouch, eyeing the blossom of crystal ice which had formed in the center. She hardly had time to blink before the first cracks formed.

"I would be a failure of a cultivator if I had not," Meizhen said, as the ice shattered, scattering from her. Frost and slush clung briefly to the hems of her gown as she stepped down onto the gleaming black ice. "The power behind your techniques has improved, if the potency of your art was higher, it would have broken my passive defences."

Ling Qi nodded as she rose to her full height. The Frozen Soul Serenade, the art taught to her by Zeqing was beginning to fall behind as she rose through the stages of the green realm. But she was not yet ready to truly make it her own, and develop her own version. She still felt a little trepidation at the idea. There was a difference between tweaking a basic art from the archive and trying to make something equal to Zeqing's song. "You have me at a disadvantage, like usual," Ling Qi sighed.

She could feel Sixiang all but rolling their eyes, and laughed. "Why did you ask that way instead of talking to me?"

Meizhen cocked an eyebrow, resting her hand on her hip, where the sash gifted to her by Bao Qingling rippled with toxic qi. "You were unavailable."
Ling Qi gave her a dead eyed look, unimpressed by the excuse.

Meizhen smiled thinly. "You have described him well enough. A request from one of my stature put him in a good, malleable mood, once he got over the initial alarm did it not?"

"Don't put it like that," Ling Qi grimaced. "But yes, it did make him happy."

"Whatever your preferred terminology is," Meizhen replied flippantly.

"You have changed," Ling Qi mused. Meizhen had always had an unshakeable confidence in her public persona, but it had deepened over the past months. In a way, Ling Qi was a little jealous. She still felt as if she were faking her own poise at times.

"For the better, naturally," Meizhen replied, stepping up onto solid stone once more.

"Yeah, who knew a few kisses could accomplish so much, or have you gone further than that?" Ling Qi said idly, her lips twitching up into a smirk.

Meizhen spluttered, color rising in her pale cheeks. "Do not just say things like that you vulgar girl."

Sixiang snickered along with her, but Ling Qi raised her head in surrender as Meizhen began to glare. "Sorry Meizhen. Someone has to tease you though, and unfortunately I can't rely on Lady Cai for that."

"Hmph," Meizhen replied wordlessly, giving her a look that promised vengeance. Ling Qi resigned herself to being embarrassed in the future, the vengeance of a Bai was unstoppable after all.

"I can sense when I am being made light of," Meizhen sniffed.

"I would never," Ling Qi said, giving a mocking bow. Rasing her head, she let her smile fade. "Really though, Meizhen how have you been?"

The other girl pursed her lips. "In all honesty, I have been frustrated. I understand why I am not deployed, but I am beginning to find it stifling. Particularly when I am the only one."

Ling Qi dipped her head in acknowledgement. The only one out of the people Bai Meizhen concerned herself with naturally.

"But my growth has been good," Bai Meizhen said. "I will not be far behind Qingling in achieving the sixth stage. However, beyond that, Ling Qi can you tell me what has happened to Cai Renxiang?"

"We have accepted a heavy responsibility," Ling Qi said.

"That would explain a certain level of stress, but I am certain you know that is not what I am talking about," Bai Meizhen replied.

Ling Qi considered the encounter on the mountainside, Liming and the conversation they had earlier this month. "It is something only lady Renxiang has the right to share. Please, just continue as you always do around her. She won't appreciate anything else, I think."

Meizhen crossed her arms, and although frustration passed over her features, she gave a single nod. "Very well. It was somewhat rude of me to ask."

"Its not rude to be concerned about a friend," Ling Qi said with a shrug. "But I guess I should ask, what do you think of what we're doing?"

Meizhen paused, glancing back at the frozen pond and scattered ice. "I worry for the both of you. That you are pushing too fast and trusting too quickly. I can't imagine my family looking upon this matter with approval."

Ling Qi lowered her head a little. She had expected that.

"Which is why I expect you to be invited to speak with us, come the tournament," Meizhen finished, and Ling Qi looked up in surprise.

"Well, Lady Cai will be invited. You will no doubt attend as her retainer," Meizhen acknowledged. "While my Aunt will be busy, representatives from among her supporters will come, both for Xiao Fen's sake and to maintain the connection with the Duchess."

"Oh," Ling Qi said, feeling a little nervous. "Will they be ill disposed towards us, do you think?"

Meizhen was quiet for an uncomfortably long time. "...They will be the friendliest audience you can expect, among my family."

"That doesn't give me any confidence at all," Ling Qi groused.

"I had hoped to give you and Cai Renxiang both a degree of coaching," Bai Meizhen said, ignoring her words. "Do you think your schedules will allow it?"

"I already asked Xuan Shi to clear his schedule over the next few days. And I have a meeting with Bao Qian yet this month," Ling Qi said, chewing her lip. She needed to clear time for Zhengui too, although that could be done in the evening and early morning."But yes, please and thank you. I am sure Lady Cai will say the same."

"Then it seems, we will be seeing one another more often, Qi," Meizhen said, smiling slightly.
"That is a silver lining," Ling Qi said, smiling back

Looking up at the polished stone door which bore Li Suyin's name on its replaceable placard, Ling Qi considered her own surprise. She had introduced Xuan Shi to her friend, but she hadn't expected to be invited here to meet him. Raising her hand to knock, she blinked as the door creaked open on its own. Her eyes flicked up to the strands of pale white webbing attached to the upper part of the door.

Shrugging, she stepped inside, tracing the vibrating lines that traversed through the lacey cloud of cobweb which shrouded the ceiling, feeling the echo of [communication] and [alertness] embedded in the silk.

"Yep, perfectly normal answering system, no need to spare it a thought," Sixiang whispered in amusement.

The door drifted shut behind her, with a faint, eerie creak. Li Suyin was really dedicated to her theme, wasn't she? Walking deeper into the entry room, unconcerned, Ling Qi caught the movement deeper in the hall as the floor ground open.

"Welcome Ling Qi! I'm so glad that your journey went well!" Li Suyin said, beaming up at her from her seat on the back of the pony sized white spider which had evidently carried her up the hidden tunnel in the floor.

"Well I hardly wanted to let everyone down," Ling Qi replied, she met the jeweled eyes of the construct staring blankly up at her from beneath the lip of the tunnel. It was definitely a construct rather than a living spider. "You look well Suyin. I hope you're not letting your exercise slip, riding about like that though."

Li Suyin pouted at her, an expression much at odds with her dress and surroundings. "Ling Qi, it's not kind to lead with things like that when you return from a trip."

"Sorry," Ling Qi laughed. "I'm glad to see you Suyin. How have things been."

"Very well," Li Suyin said cheerfully. "Oh, do hop on Xuan Shi is down in the testing chambers with Su Ling."

"Really?" Ling Qi asked as she circled the construct, eyeing the saddle bolted to its back. After a moment, she reappeared behind Li Suyin, letting her legs dangle off the side. It was a little snug being pressed against the shorter girls back, but she wasn't quite as bad about that kind of thing as she had once been.

"Not even gonna joke, progress is progress," Sixiang said sagely.

"Yes, I wouldn't have imagined them getting along either," Li Suyin agreed as their mount shuddered to life and began to skitter downward. The tunnel entrance slid shut behind them as the spider descended into the dark. "Oh, watch your head, the tunnels are a bit snug."

Ling Qi stared at the back of her friend's head, wondering if she was being teased in turn. Li Suyin glanced over her own shoulder humor sparkling in her one eye.

With much dignity, Ling Qi ignored it, peering instead at the winding tunnel descending into the earth. "Why do you put so much work into these temporary homes anyway?"

"Practice for when I decide on something more permanent," Li Suyin said cheerfully. "Why are you seeking out Sir Xuan?"

Ling Qi pondered that for a moment. She was still deliberating how she wanted to handle this…

[] Treat the destination as a surprise. (More chance to speak with Xuan Shi about other things. More engaging conversation for Ling Qi)
[] Tell him right away where you intend to take him (Get your ear talked off by a fan, learn more about Xuan Shi personally.)

I want to know more about Turtle Boy. Plus he's a nerd. Let him do his thing? Maybe.

Plus I think the destination is some place he'd get the most out of if he was mentally ready. Though with the nightmare spirit in his head, maybe it should be a surprise, especially so the nightmare cant set things up to twist the meeting up. Plus leaving it a surprise might let LQ and Xuan Shi bond more..... hmm.
