Most certainly," Hou Min agreed. "In any case, Miss Ling, are you aware that some miscreants are attempting to paint your accomplishments in the Underground as a mere lucky mistake? That it actually nearly caused the party's loss? I actually heard two disciples saying so aloud on my morning run!
"I never got a chance to say thanks for getting us out of there," Ji Rong said gruffly as she took her place.

Well, that takes care of that. Though I doubt the rumor was anything worth worrying about. Still, Ji Rong is giving Ling Qi quite a bit of face here. And it embarrasses her detractors.

Voting for this, because it mentions our Spirits specifically, and this whole "fighting with our spirits" is the exact thing we've been practicing for a while now (well, with Zhengui, but Hanyi and Six already had their roles in our strat before).

Theres no need to reinvent the wheel

Ji Rong wants to fight Ling Qi where shes strongest, and Ling Qi wants to test herself in that same manner

Simple enough

Ling Qi is a control fighter, not a rushdown one. Besides, she'd have lost their first fight if she didn't have so much defenses and Ji Rong certainly hasn't gotten weaker on the beatdown front.

Yeah, but that requires quite a lot of time. D-rank qi isn't a big deal on our scale - it's much more impactful in group engagements with lower level people on the field.

The dps here is high enough that I wouldn't expect things to drag out long enough for it to matter, and we'd be better off casting HR or Eagle for some more dps.
Eh...It's a lot of time if you're expecting it to drain him out alone. Keep in mind that he has to spend qi to fight us. Also keep in mind that Lunatic Whirl and Elegy and Refrain are also draining him. Also keep in mind that it'll take a fair amount of hits to down him, especially with the defensive approach. If we aren't in rushdown, we only lose two Rank C attacks (neither of which is guaranteed to hit) spending our action on it, and it gives us the extra qi to use an extra C rank tech every 2 turns. Which could be USR, an offensive perfect, or Toast, for example.

And frankly, if we aren't in rushdown, I'm not sure we'll win by damage. I mean, he has to be activating at least a C rank tech every round to keep up. (Probably 2 techs or a B rank tech, in practice.) He probably has A rank qi. With it and Elegy up, and HR's drain probably active for at least part of the fight, that's probably 10 rounds fighting all out. Add the threat of Lunatic Whirl and Isolation, and it drops even lower. We can play defensive and trade perfects till he runs out.

And while our damage is a faster clock in theory, that's because we can continue investing more actions to do more damage, and doesn't count the fact that damage is much easier to defend against. If we just left it up to our DoTs, we'd probably end up with a similar ~10 turn clock. And as for defenses... He has to burn Qi to do it, of course - but between forcing him to burn C rank qi to perfect an attack, and forcing him to burn D rank qi every turn for the rest of the fight, I know which one I'd pick.

It's different in rushdown, of course. Rushdown is based on pouring all our actions into damage in the hope of winning quickly. But in a defensive strategy, the techs that just have to be used once and then win for you if you keep up long enough are more efficient than one more hit. If you were comparing it to a DoT like PWC, it might be less efficient, but single hits are much less worthwhile.

It's still possible we'll win by damage, maybe even probable. But that means he decided to spend less qi on defense. Qi Drain's ability to win the fight is secondary to its ability to keep them from doing as much stuff.

We must not attempt to challenge a fish at swimming.

Ji Rong is a rush fighter that aims to win fast. We cannot beat him at the strategy he himself excels. While in rock paper scissors victory is absolute, in more complicated games putting a strong paper against a strong scissors is better than putting a weak scissors against a strong scissors. In the first case, we may win if our paper is well built enough to account for disadvantages and/or if we are somewhat stronger or luckier, in the second case we will only win if we can roflstomp.

tl;dr never fight your enemy in his field of expertise, use yours or a neutral ground but never his.

We already had a glimpse at our new offensive arts in action. I want to see demonstration of our defensive ones as well.

After all, that was the polite thing to do, and she had come far in terms of politeness.

Well...

"I never got a chance to say thanks for getting us out of there," Ji Rong said gruffly as she took her place.

"I have had a full schedule," Ling Qi said neutrally. Zhengui came to a stop behind her, and Hanyi stood up, doing her best to match Ling Qi's pose.

Not that far. Doesn't even say you're welcome when somebody thanks them for saving them. So rude, Ling Qi.

On the other hand, I don't see Ji Rong making friends with people Ling Qi did. He'd be better with folks of Heavenly Peaks (Imperial palace) but honestly, he'd never get a chance like he has with Western Forest.
I think if they both hadn't fumbled their socials Ji Rong could have found a place under Cai Renxiang. The kind of shit that cost Rong his sister would be intolerable under CRX, and if he can get along with Lu Feng he can get along with Gan Flexington. Lol at meeting the Duchess though.
