To be fair, the English part could be since she (Karin) was a native English speaker. Most native English speakers never learn another language and just assume others will speak English, or at least that's how it is for much of the US.
That's partially because - partially thanks to the British Empire - English is one of the most common languages, and is a much more international language than Mandarin, with slightly more than half of its speakers having it as a second language. To put that in perspective, there are an estimated 1,010 million English speakers1, with 510 million having it as their second language; Spanish has an estimated 570 million total speakers.
Basically, this means that the languages people who read Naruto are most likely to know are Japanese and English; given that it's a Japanese series and the setting draws heavily on Japanese culture, that's probably useless for hiding what you say/write.
English, on the other hand, is either uncommon, rare, or very obscure, and it's more likely to be a common language between two transmigrants.

1 This is according to Ethnologue, and may not be accurate; this information is hard to gather accurately, and estimates range from ~500 million to ~1,500 million.

Yeah I knew that about English. It also has surprisingly few dialects for how many people speak it. Granted part of that is because of how hard it is to consistently draw the line for dialects, but I digress.

You know; if Karin is using English to try and bluff Hisana into revealing her status as a transmigrant then she clearly failed her knowledge roll way back when. Because over in Kumo they canonically use at least some English:
Cloud uses the English letters of the alphabet for codenames. The letters themselves could hint at a connection to Kumogakure.

+5XP for you to assign for seeing underneath the underneath. Hisana will be able to remember this fact and avoid such implications now.

Another bit of game mechanics: this is a quest about ninjas. Element slinging battle wizards they may be, but deception is still important.

Remember that your protagonist is fallible and mortal.
Her final problem was recording her foreknowledge somehow, and not getting discovered doing it. She initially thought English might have been a useful code, but the use of latin characters throughout the manga had dissuaded her from that. Her only other idea was to somehow copy the effect of the stone tablet containing the instructions for the Moon's Eye Plan. Text readable only by those with a Sharingan and then encoded into english (transcribed as katakana) sounded about as secure as she could make it without being overly suspicious.

The safest route, as far as concealing our transmigrant status goes, is to pretend we don't know what she's talking about, and reporting her to Hokage under suspicion of being some sort of Cloud-affiliated infiltrator

Having Karin as an ally strikes me as more valuable than concealing that we're a transmigrant. Revealing that doesn't reveal that it gave us any valuable information.

And we know this how exactly?
Seriously, as lies go, the idea of the girl who jumped into a fight with an S-classer is one of the more preposterous.

As a reminder:
The girl got stabbed in the chest by Kusanagi.
Nobody eats a sword to the chest as part of a cover story for versimilitude; you can never be sure that defensive technique will work.

As bona fides go, that is one of the strongest references one can come up with; even Tsunade doesn't eat that kind of injury without consequences.
So you can be pretty sure that she isn't working for Oro or his allies.
And is probably pretty desperate to get in to Konoha.

If English language is known to be linked to Cloud, and it seems like a reasonable guess that it is, if only by some few people, it's not unreasonable to assume that Uchihas, in their long history, were able to learn it and record it in their clan archives.

Point of order:
Romaji is linked to Cloud. That's the latin alphabet.
English is not.
And none of this says that other nations don't use romaji, just that Cloud is especially fond of it.

I mean, it's language.
Language of enemy nations is like one of the more widespread electives that you get in diplomats and intelligence ops.
Why wouldn't it be taught in the Academy?

And when we see other nin in canon, they all speak the same language.
Hell, when Jiraiya was dying, the message he wrote on Fukasaku's back was in Hindu-Arabic numerals like they do in English, not the Chinese-based numerology that classic Japanese uses.

Hell, let's even accept your assumptions.
Why would a Grass genin/alleged infiltrator she's never met before have reason to believe that Hisana in particular would know the English language, but neither Sasuke, who was actually born in the clan with access to the best teachers, nor Naruto who has shared the same compound with her, does not?

Konoha Intelligence would be very interested in the answer to that question. So would Danzo.

It is plausible with the way her home village treated she is simply too ecstatic over finally being to defect to a place that will treat her in a fair manner, and the possibility of having someone as a confidant to truly care about such a minor detail, or at least what is one from her pov.

An apt analogy to her situation would be someone whose been cold for what seems like forever one day noticed a column of smoke in the distance, and has been desperately doing whatever she can to reach the fire whence it rises. Now she finally stands at the edge of the clearing where the fire burns, and while there are unexpected faces Karin is far too happy at having finally made it to truly care.

Who said we had to have any intricate knowledge of the narutoverse in anyone's eyes, do you know how many people speak English in the world, and how many people only know of the existence of naruto as a thing? A crap ton of my friends and people I know are like, Naru-what? We can just say we died and got reincarnated, no one has to actually know, not even Karin

A lot of that is how many of the speakers are learning it as a second language and thus learn a major dialect. Another factor is US media gets around internationally on a unprecedented scale which does a lot for spreading that dialect to those non-native speakers.

Couple extra comments.

"Alright, here's what we're going to do. Karin and I will distract the jinchuuriki, whilst Naruto and Hiroyuki carry our unconscious passengers through
The other three Grass shinobi are ALL unconscious.
That rather corroborates Karin's story about having a fight with her team; no one consents to being rendered unconscious as a ruse.
Not in the Forest of Death, and with hostile wildlife and enemy nin about.

Hisana rushed forward at tremendous speed, her hands moving from seal to seal. Water shot out of her mouth, so fast and compact that it became a deadly projectile.
Hisana is using Water techniques in a dry area.
That will be noted, especially since she did it in front of the Kazekage's children, and within camera range of the tower.

Karin was launched off the ground; a spear of sand only just missing her.
Karin is vastly less physically capable than one would assume, given her chains.
Hisana saved her butt there.

Or, more accurately, Hisana stuck a three point landing and then caught Karin. Hisana gently put Karin down, then helped her up.
Again, more physical evidence that Karin is nowhere as physically capable as even Naruto at this point.
Probably closer to the chuunin-level skillset the Exam is looking to evaluate than the covert jounin that constitute the membership of Team 7.

Hiroyuki said that man was one of the Sannin..." Sasuke said, looking unsure.
Hisana wuld have drilled the group on the Bingo books.
Especially after getting mugged by Zetsus.
Sasuke has no reason not to recognize Orochimaru's face if random Grass nin knows it.

Naruto may not recognize it(no fan of schoolwork, he) but Sasuke should; given his personal interest, he should know most S-classers and noteworthy nukenin on sight.

This is actually called out in the relevant update:
His false face was torn straight off, bloody skin ripped to shreds by razor sharp claws. Then, Orochimaru stepped out of his false skin, tearing it like it was made from rice paper. A kick sent Naruto flying backwards, fire burning away his remaining clones.

"O-Or-Orochimaru..." the grass genin, who seemed to have regained the ability to stand at roughly the same time as Hisana and Sasuke, murmured. Every Konoha ninja, or just plain anyone who'd ever glanced at a bingo book, knew the man's face. One of the world's most infamous missing nin, here and dressed in the skin of an human being.
So I'm not sure what's up.

not actually that much of a feat given that while konoha is quite a hot place it's also notable that it's a humid area with lots of evaporated water in the air, the only thing which would be noted is her chakra control to gather and compress water in the speed she did

Wasn't one of Tobirama's claims to fame the ability to pull water from the air?

[x] Yes, report your encounter to Orochimaru

It's a typo, I'm fairly sure the QM will just fold these into the properly-worded vote. It's more because I'm wanting to be silly and I want to see what the QM's response to it actually getting the most votes will be.

I'm trying to imagine the justification for leaving Oro-related stuff out and just.

"Hisana why didn't you mention a Sannin came after you?"
"Idk I didn't think it was a big enough deal?"
