NGL this post also comes across as misogynistic.

There's an implication of "Women are shallow and will only love men that materially provide for them" that can easily be taken here.
Well, a few years ago I saw an article in the female press that could be summarised like this:
"Women now earn more money than men, and that's bad, because women don't want to settle for someone who earns less than them, and it's all men's fault."

A lot of people just can't handle a relationship. I could pull up facts and statistics until I'm blue in the face but, really, most people just aren't mature enough to care for another person.

In DC it's even worse. Abusive relationships are significantly more normal there than they should be. Damian Wayne was conceived through rape after all, and Batman was canonically trying to get Superman to care for Connor, regardless of his own issues or feelings on the matter.

So put that on hold. Back up. Try and get yourself figured out and if you really need companionship? Get a pet.
I understand, but it's better to slightly alternthe wording, like "civilians can find unconditional love, but we heroes keep too many secrets so we should get a pet instead."

This chapter was great. Here are some of the highlights that made it a riot

"Puberty." Alchemist answered for them. "It can hit humans pretty fast. We're mayflies compared to you guys."

...She kind of wished he'd said they spent three and a half months at the gates of Hell.

And on the other hand, having another girls opinion wasn't actually a bad thing. Especially with what she needed to get.

"Oh!" Megan blinked in surprise at how mundane the answer was. "How did that happen?"

"...Puberty?"

The way Jinx goes from questioning Alchemist's choice of words to using them herself is hilarious. Of course, iirc she still aged in that space so for her, it might well be Puberty.

Alright. He could do that.

"In a way that makes sense to me."

Still not an insurmountable challenge!

This mental response to Batman's request show a bit of self-awareness that he is often speaking nonsense to everyone around him.

He'd lost weight. Put on some muscle. This was probably the most fit Leslie had ever been, and he wasn't even around to enjoy it!

"Yes. It's the wolf pup. Why do you have a wolf pup?" At least Batman was asking the easy questions.

"When a girl wants unconditional love, loyalty and affection she gets a boyfriend. When one of us wants that?" Here Alchemist pointed to Batman, Robin and then himself. "Smart choice is to get a dog."

All that hard work, and for what?

As to the second part, it think I has already been beat to death in convo.

"Jinx, that's... That's just normal dog training. When did- How did you even get a puppy? No, no, nevermind. I suppose next you'll tell me it also knows Power Word Heel!" Dinah's words caused the smile on her wards face to turn brittle, but it took a moment for M'gann to figure out why.

The puppy was focused on Dinah, almost ready to pounce when it stuck its nose up in the air and howled.

And everyone in the room could feel the healing magic. Exactly the same as Alchemist used, albeit weaker.

"Um... Well? Technically yes?" Jinx answered softly.

It went mostly unheard. Dinah.exe had crashed, and so had M'gann.

M'gann's running compentary, the setup with memories of Alchemist teaching the dogs from books, and the payoff with the dual meaning of heel/heal was gold. .exe crashing was just the cherry on top.

"Yes! Look at it! Everything makes too much sense! He might enjoy a night with me, but he continues to return to that catty prostitutes arms! Why, I ask myself, what does she offer him that I cannot?! And now I know the truth. No longer am I blind!" She turned her laptop around to show him what she'd been working on.

A dark red fox costume with an animalistic headpiece and a cape shaped like multiple tails.

"I shall become the Flying Fox and meet him on his terms! These furries may be disgusting, but if that's what must be done, then it shall be done!" It was... Good that she sounded so certain?

But he was going to have to try and dissuade her from some of her... Accessory choices.

"The villains of Gotham shall learn to fear me! When they hear my battle cry, they shall cower like babes before the storm!"

"Your... battle cry?" Perhaps it would be wise to keep her away from the Lazarus Pits, just for a bit?

"Uwu!"

The results of Alchemists actions all the way back near the beginning of the story having these kinds of knock-on effects is great. I look forward to seeing how Gotham reacts to the Flying Fox. What will the theme of her crimes be? How long will it take for Selina to go after her. How much popcorn will Alchemists bring to the resulting fight?

I raise my hand to comment as I lower it only to raise my hand once more, sooooo this is how Damien gets born in this reality. Modern problems call for modern solutions, I can dig it.

It's not about what women think of men.
It's about what men think of men, specifically, men comparing themselves to the role they are told to imitate.
It's not misogyny, it's self-misandry.
A woman can be emotionally deep and unconditionally loving to a man that provides no material thing, and the man will experience none of that support because he's programmed to hate himself and everything connected to him for failing to imitate the image.

It's depression by design, it's poison-colored lenses that twist male neurology into perceiving the worst of everything, even the woman who loves him; it's why midlife crisis is such dark comedy, the man is trapped in a mindset that corrupts his ability to percieve his wife's loving overtures as shallow and manipulative.

Which is, you know, what depression does.

I read the dog comment as 'if you want something to obey every whim for a scrap of attention, tolerate any abuse of trust, and drool at your feet' being the commonality between dogs and boyfriends, specifically to girls, not women, this implies youth on both parts and all the negatives that go with that, but hey, I hate dogs, so them having positive connotation is a bit out of my reference frame.

Wow. That sounds incredibly misogynistic.

Because like the natural read I get is " men can be unconditionally loyal to women but women can't be to men (thus men need to get dogs instead for unconditional affection)" and yikes…
Honestly my read was Alchemist doesn't want a romantic relationship, and Jinx was starting to get interested in one with him, so he got her a dog which gave her something else to focus on and kept things from becoming very, very awkward. I mean alchemists actions are half trolling and half practicality this just struck me as him being practical. But that's just my take on it.

Yeah, it's not about whether you can find a loyal companion, it's that the wording implies that boyfriends can be loyal lovers but girlfriends cannot. Which again, yikes.
Huh, I read it as dogs being better than boyfriends because they're more loyal... which is probably true. There's the old joke about testing whether your dog or your SO loves you more. Lock each in the trunk of a car for an hour, and check which one wants to kiss you when you let them out. (Note: You will get different results from your SO if the two of you have small children. An hour of silence in the trunk of a car may be a very welcome break.)

She got a feeling of mean-spirited amusement from Jinx

YESSS!

We're starting to see Jinx be snarky and mischievous.

Psychologically, it's a good sign that Jinx feels comfortable enough to play a small prank, able to push boundaries without fear of getting kicked out of Black Canary's apartment.

"The villains of Gotham shall learn to fear me! When they hear my battle cry, they shall cower like babes before the storm!"

"Your... battle cry?" Perhaps it would be wise to keep her away from the Lazarus Pits, just for a bit?

"Uwu!"

Oh man, I can't wait to see Robin or Catwoman react to "the Flying Fox" as rumors about Batman's deviancy spread throughout the Gotham underworld.

Talia: "Uwu!"
Criminal: :o "NOPE! DO NOT WANT!"

OR

Cobblepot: (weirded out) "I used to enjoy being called Penguin, but then Batman had go and ruin it for me."

"True." Red Torpedo agreed with her. "Consuming crickets and defecating are two of the things I most look forward to here. It is significantly better than the old folks home I was previously decommissioned in."

How cute, Red Tornado now has two toad siblings to keep him company.

All that's missing is someone watching by, see Tornado talking to toads, give him a raised eyebrow or odd look, and slowly back out of the room away from eccentric android robot.

Red Tornado: "Please stop pretending you cannot talk when other people are in the room, you are making me look crazy."

Toads: (laugh) :D :D :D

The puppy was focused on Dinah, almost ready to pounce when it stuck its nose up in the air and howled.

And everyone in the room could feel the healing magic. Exactly the same as Alchemist used, albeit weaker.

Tiny doggo shall be Alchemist's lovely assistant!

Scene:
Robin: (injured) "Can you please heal me?"

Alchemist: "No, Ash needs the XP."

Ash: (wearing a nurse's hat) :D "AWOO!"

I think perhaps we should...definitely...move off the dating subject. The original post was commentary on the actual fic but a few of these posts are actually kinda yikesy.

"When a normal person wants unconditional love, loyalty and affection they start a romantic relationship. When one of us wants that?" Here Alchemist pointed to everyone in the room, the mountain, in general, and then himself. "Smart choice is to get a dog."
This would work better and also not imply false, toxic gender dynamics that have propagated through Western Civilization since roughly Rome was still fighting Carthage.

Just sayin

New drinking game: take a shot every time somone in the thread says "Yikes" or one of it's variations.

I post a chapter before I go to work, I come back it looks about ready to break out into a war!

Alright. To start with.

To the folks who actually read the chapter? Fantastic, I appreciate every single one of you. I'll be sure to sprinkle a little more crack into my general seasoning mix going forward!

For those focusing on what was said about the dog?
Take a second and re-read the last segment, with Talia. That's a woman going through a mental breakdown because the man she loves has used her as a one-night stand and then f-ed off back to someone else that just fits his fetishes better.
Proof contrary to what Alchemist said.
Now, why did he say that then? I've seen a lot of heat over what was said, but very, very few people wondering -why- it was said. What possible reason or experience could lead to that line of thinking?

If people would like to further complain about it, please feel free to message me. Otherwise? Please keep things constructive.

Yeah... the really weird thing to me is people complaining about a character saying it and trying to PC the words up, when... it wasn't narration. It's a characters dialogue, which means it's their views, their words, their biases. It's not something that's being said as fact but as an opinion, and even then it's pretty obvious he's being blase about things and making a joke of the question like he usually tries to do. Why the heck are people trying to clean it up.

Honestly I'm just glad that Jinx is exactly what I'd hoped she'd be. Someone who doesn't shit on Alchemist for no reason 24/7. I was so tired of the good guys being bigger assholes than the villains, and now we've jumped all the way past her training and rehab phases and she can join the team dynamic early.

Ok, can we talk about that comment about Bruce ditching Talia for cat woman real quick? Cus everything about his relationship with that woman is suspect, and not at all healthy for anyone involved.
