They did not understand why they were hated by the world. They were banished by their nations and they did not know why, they weren't the first and definitely not the last that this event has occurred, to their rudimentary knowledge the nations across the world did this because of various reasons.
Some were either because the nation could only support so many people and banished (or in extreme cases culled) people of their nation so they wouldn't collapse, another reason was that there was a deal about a certain number of persons being traded from a nation to another - the nations they were 'sold' to would care for them but they would live as they lived and fight what they fought, others did it simply because they could.
They never truly had a choice and likely never will, these pilgrims now search a new home many do not survive the travels being killed by bandits, monsters, or something worse. Many of these pilgrims condemn their souls to the abyss that is chaos because, to them, how could anything be worse to what they experienced.
Many cults seen in the world dedicated to chaos are mainly composed of these fallen pilgrims.
