Omake: The Forest Queen 2
The presence of the dark god and its empire had been a constant source of anxiety for Ariel over the last few years. Ever since she had first learned of its presence. Years before it had revealed itself even. A persistent feeling of unease that followed her around after the sun had set during those days. At the time she had simply shrugged it off as stress or worry about some other problem. Like that horrid wretch Morghur deciding now was a good time to attack.
She should have paid more attention to those feelings. At this point in her long life she had learned to trust her instincts. They had served her well over the millennia even if she did not always listen. Like with that hag Morathi. Oh how she wished she had simply killed the bitch queen when she had the chance. If she had trusted her instincts so much suffering and death could have been avoided. Now she had failed to do so once again. Dammit she was a demigod of course she would have feelings about something like a dark power rising.
The day the dark pillar appeared in the sky had been one of the most frightening experiences on her life. The massive wave of darkness that echoed across the Other Sea had shaken her deeply. It had echoed with the power of dragons demanding supplication and compliance with its will. It radiated the promise of cold directed malice. Worst of all it had reeked of the corruption of the undead. It was then she knew that a new dark god had been born. Further reinforced when she sensed the power of the Changer. A working only that god could create. A powerful concealment that hid the new god from sight until it was ready to make its own moves.
Few things could compare to it in her mind. Her own patron Isha was of course superior in power to this monster. As was her husbands patron Kurnous. The great Oak itself would always be superior as far as the Asrai were concerned. That was an immutable fact in their minds as certain as the fact that the sun would rise again.
Of course it had not stayed the same. This was not the minor gods of chaos. It was not the verminous horned rat and it's self destructive behavior. It was not Hashut and it's narrow minded gathering of faith and power. It was not the simple and gluttonous Maw revered by the Ogres. No this was another entity all together.
So this new creature had seized the lands of Old Bretonnia. Tearing down the old rulers and wiping out the dominant faith. Crushing all that opposed it with a vast tide of Black Death and swarms of dragons. An unstoppable juggernaut that seized all in a matter of months. Then the beast started to build.
It seduced the people to its side. Using magic to heal ailments and giving vengeance to earn their faith. Using tireless labor to construct great roads and cities. Vast cathedrals rose where thousands prayed daily. Vast amounts of food produced by new farms filled bellies and the population surged. All the while the beast fed growing more powerful with each passing year.
Part of her wondered about what could have been. If she had listened to her instincts. If she bothered to look beyond her own realm. Could she have prevented this? Stopped this monster from being born. She did not know.
It was too late to do anything about it now. All she could do now was prepare for when the beast inevitably came to their realm. Though she feared greatly what would happen when it did.
