I do not like the Wards route. It's boring. One chapter for power testing, one for saying hi to the Wards, and one for the great reveal that Magpie is now an indentured servant of the PRT. All comedy coming from Wards being exposed to Addy won't be anything new. We already had that from Taylor, Lisa, Anette, and Danny.

Malicious compliance also won't get her anywhere. PRT has a huge stick in form of her tinkering budget and approval of her projects. Annoy them and she gets scraps and nothing she builds from them will get approved. THEN there's the fact that they already got their money's worth out of her by forcing her to build dress spheres for them. Anything else is just a bonus. Finally, she has to stay there for years and PRT will make sure that she does. Just to keep their dress spheres working.

Overall, Addy just gave up her agency in exchange for absolutely nothing. All she had to do to get out was Null Lance her head and respawn at her base. Problem solved. PRT can have all the fun proving that the new hero TottallyNotMagpie is actually Addy.
While I am not a fan of the Wards route..
She could make the dress spheres set to malfunction. And say that's a built in feature.

Just mention all the crap they pulled in interviews. Stripping a traumatized pre teen girl after she was kidnapped and even changing her panties for her while she slept is a scandal at best.

Publically mention Eidolon getting weaker, then bribing her way out or at least never telling gg them how to fix it.

Taunt em with knowledge, maybe drop that Jack slash is a Thinker with some master components online.
Just to verify her info.

Depending on how specific the contract is on timing She could resign as soon as she's unveiled.

She doesn't really need any of their supplies. So this could just be a short arc.

Luckily they were quick on the uptake and got what I meant. "Oh. That's a good point." Aunt Rose turned to our laywer. "Is there anything that can be done to speed getting my niece out of their custody?"

Because the longer I stayed the more ADAM would build up and the sooner I'd start to look like a proper Little Sister. The PRT would probably have questions at that point, along with medical examinations. That would probably lead to a brain scan at some point and explaining the implants I have was something I definitely wasn't a fan of.

I sighed. "I need to get out of her as soon as possible."

"The only option of that is joining the Wards, like they want."

"It's up to you Addy." Uncle Danny said. "As Mr Calle explained we can fight the charges, but that will take time.

It looks like I was going to have to join the Wards. Which was probably going to be irritating as fuck. And I'd have to deal with all sorts of annoyances. On the other hand though I had Splyce now so it's not like they can dictate entirely what I wind up tinkering. And I'll be able to hang out with Missy a lot more. That could be kinda fun.
Okay what the fuck. Her "solution" to avoiding the PRT finding out about her implants as well as making sure she doesn't lose any of her tinkering time is to join the PRT, who will have her do a metric fuckton of mandated power testing because of the absurdly wide array of effects she's shown. Fuck this, I'm out.

As much as I would like Addy to remain a rogue, her becoming a ward was kind of bound to happen. There is no way that Piggot is gonna let Addy walk away without doing her best to get Addy in the wards. And despite it's cons, it does give Addy more resources, friends, connections, protection and more options in case she needs help. Well played Piggot, well fucking played

Also, I get the feeling that the future interludes will be absolutely hilarious with Addy's brand of insanity and the pure fragile minds of the wards, and the fact that she's crushing on Kid Win

As other people have noted, there are two big problems here. One, Armsmaster was already looking into tracking her implant signals. And two, how are they are not going to do a full physical on her which will discover all her physical changes anyway? I don't see how this helps hide her true identity as Splice for more than another day or two, tops.

But if she can somehow gets past those obstacles, I'd go beyond malicious compliance if I were her and do the worst thing possible from the PRT's perspective...absolutely nothing. Why would she bother making anything for them outside of those four White Mage dresspheres? Aside from that, give them nothing. Let them keep 100% of her tinkering budget while she does nothing but show up for her minimum number of hours per week and watch TV in the Wards room or go "take a nap" while she tinkers remotely in her real lab. If they bitch about her doing nothing, she can devote one afternoon per month on blowing her entire monthly budget on something completely useless, then tell them she's out of tinkering funds until next month. And when she has to go out on public patrols, embarrass them as much as possible. (I assume you've read Implacable and Just a Phase?)

She could also, as others have suggested, have some fun at her formal public introduction, and tell everyone how she was forced to join instead of going to prison after defending herself when she was kidnapped by the Empire, who tried to kill her. Glenn will love dealing with the aftermath of that.

And as for that traitorous bitch Vista, Addy should cut her out of her life. You don't reward betrayal with continued friendship. Vista betrayed her hoping that she'd get a BFF to hang out with in the Wards? Tell her to fuck off, then give her the silent treatment; see how that works out for her. This part really presses hot buttons for me - you don't betray your friends like that.

I just realized what they did and that is fucked up, Addy is not exactly traumatized but from the perspective of the general public, she's a pre teen girl who had to fight for her life and kill in "justifiable self defense", and they stripped her while she slept. That will surely cause major scandal, I'm just hoping that the Protectorate actually has brains this time and doesn't try to antagonize their newest ward to the point where Addy escalates.

I can't wait to see how addy is going to twist the prt regulations into knots, malicious compliance is one of my favorite things to read about.

Oh, the Wards thing will 'work out' yeah...

Heh. They have no fucking idea what they are dealing with right now.

But hey! Kaiser is dead!

...yeah, this is going to lead to some fascinating directions. Especially with the PRT coming to realize just what she can do.

But hey, direct contact with Vista and Kid Win! That'll be awesome! Also Dennis hilarity dealing with Addy. And the PRT dealing with a Tinker of Fiction because there is no way that isn't getting out. Especially as things roll forward. Heh. This is going to be kinda crazy.

As much as I dislike the fact that Missy betrayed Addy's trust like that, it was done with good intentions. She's just trying to look out for her friend and although part of that reason is that she wants her friend in the wards, you can't really blame her for that. She doesn't like the fact that she's being babied in the wards and she wants another girl in their group and she thinks Addy will be a great new member. There is no real malice in her decision she's just trying to look out for her friend albeit with a few selfish reasons combined with her own naivety.

Her "good intentions" were, as you noted, quite selfish. Missy was willing to screw over her friend as long as she got what she wanted.

So don't give it to her. If you reward betrayal, you'll get more of the same. Missy needs a harsh lesson on what friendship really is, and stabbing your friends in the back to get what you want isn't it.

PRT: "We have a preteen half-asian girl kidnapped by a dozen super powered white supremacist. Given a chance to escape she lashed out at her kidnappers after they shit all over the unwritten rules and made several attempts to murder her. We should definitely threaten her with manslaughter and possible life imprisonment with literal mass murderers because while fighting back a few of her kidnappers died. Thank God we were able to bravely subdue her when she was exhausted after fighting like 30 people singlehandedly."

Best lawyers ever: "This all appears legit. You better cut a deal with them!"

... After reading the current status quo of comments, I really do have to wonder exactly how the author intends for the Wards thing to basically even happen?

There's little to no way to scale back on the National Security button, which has been pressed by Director Costa-Brown on Addy. They would keep hammering on her until she broke, not just wave their hands and say "oh well".

But barring even that... the Splice connection would be inevitable. To the point that it's surprising that Armsmaster hasn't already picked up on it; Addy was using Splyce for basically the entirety of her time in M/S confinement... and not to mention the problem of the basic physical and her having the implant in her head and the genetic materials in her body that both match Splice's work. What, is she going to try to convince them that she was merely modified by Splice? She's already on record as admitting she is the one doing all that modification.

At what point does Annette or Danny sit down and realize, "Addy joins the Wards == Addy gets executed"? Because... barring extreme adjustment on the part of the government, that's exactly what would happen.

The whole thing is a shit show that can't really end in any way but the entire Hebert/Matthews family being declared kill ordered villains.

Remember: Calle was confident he could make every part of what you described "go away". The only exception was the bit where she Mastered Hookwolf, because as demonstrated in the Bad Canary case, merely using human-affecting Master powers is a Birdcageable offense.

The Wards plea bargain was to prevent the Master charges. Not for the self-defense. The context here being that even Mastering someone in self defense is still a capital crime. Unless you're a Protectorate cape. (Who will be quietly killed off, off-scene, anyhow.)

You know, I could say that, that could be the point, as it could all be a Contessa or Simurgh plot. Trying to force the SI to escalate even more to prevent from being constantly hunted.
But the judging by the Authors responses... I don't believe that to be the case.
Yeah, this story has jumped a shark or two already. Any such concerns are really just cosmetic at this point: it's pure crack now.

I have a question. How do the PRT even know that Hookwolf was mastered? He could have just gone crazy.

It can't be the first time that a cape has randomly gone off the rockers.

Edit: If you think about it completely. The PRT has no leg to stand on at all, they can't confirm mastery over anything other than crows. They undressed a child, locked said child up after the child got attacked by an entire gang, said child was then isolated from family, before finally a nail in the coffin so to speak, accusing the child of mastering something much larger than a crow because they want them under control. There is no reason at all for the SI to be in the wards. This is the most screwed up I've ever seen the PRT.

I would like to point out that the main reason why she told the Protectorate about Addy was because she learned that her friend was being targeted by the Empire, so her decision wasn't ENTIRELY selfish. Although I agree with you that what Missy did was morally speaking, wrong. She needs to learn that betraying your friend's trust is wrong and I agree that she deserves some form of punishment. The thing is I don't think that Addy should sever their friendship right there. As I said, there is no real malice in her actions and I think Addy should at least understand that. Missy should lose at least some of Addy's trust but not her friendship, besides severing ties with someone who is now her teammate isn't exactly the best option. Missy made a mistake, and that is fine. people can make mistakes, what's important is that she learns from that mistake.

Yes, PRT has no leg to stand on but this time, the PRT didn't force Addy to go join the wards, it was that dumbass lawyer who said that the fastest way for a pre teen child to get out of PRT custody is to join the wards.

Yep, but what's not mention is that they can't hold a person for suspicion more than a set amount of time. Typically 24 to 48 hours. Then they have to let them go if they don't have evidence, they can't even take blood samples or run tests without consent.

Awaiting Trial and being vindicated would have given the PRT a chance to do things without her permission. Such as a full physical. She could refuse but it would likely still be done and so they would be found to have violated her rights after the fact.

Joining the wards took all power over her AWAY.

Other solutions would have left her with secrets exposed or under threat of legal action.

Now in the wards she can simply refuse to comply with anything she doesn't like, and the most they can do is apply the ward's mandated punishment. They cannot apply the 'probationary' wards punishments either because she isn't a probationary ward.

The likely wards punishments are
Revocation of tinkering funds (they were all in addition to what she has anyway)
Revocation of patrol (something she can do on her own.)
Mandatory training (something she can simply not attend.)

Their options to force her to comply are... well using force. Which being a minor they cannot do. If they try to arrest her again, that would be patently illegal. They cannot even arrest her for breach of contract, because as a minor she isn't actually legally liable for it. Her guardians could possibly be sued, but Addy cannot be arrested for breach of contract.

Any action they take against her from this point forward is even less legally sound than before, and any arguments to hold her for weeks or months before a trial are going to be even harder to justify before a judge, given she hasn't broken her contract, and that they are arresting her because THEY threw her out of the wards, which the judge will look at and say, "You mean she had to stay till she was 16 and she didn't choose to leave and you want me to allow you to arrest her, and put her in jail for months because she wouldn't allow a physical or attend wards readiness training and has fallen to a C average in school?" and basically throw them out on their heels with a decent lawyer asking for relief.

A lot of people defending vista forget that she could just TALK to addy first that's what she would do if she actually cared for addy tell addy she vista and ask her to join

But no vista just sell out addy to look usefull there's no friendship there

You're forgetting the very simple solution to this cunundrum.

Charge her with a crime.

Once charged with a crime she is going to jail, to await trial. Will have a chance in front of a judge to request bail. But apparently in this world they won't have to grant bail because they suspect her of being a master. Even if Cale knows he can get her off, that doesn't mean the PRT might not end up actually pressing charges first, and holding her long enough to do the things that they don't want done.

But now that she's out and a ward they have guaranteed not to charge her, so they can't actually run tests without consent, because she isn't under arrest, and she isn't accused of a crime, or being prosecuted.

UUUUGH NOT THE WARDS! please, please don't follow the fucking tropes, I don't wanna have to fucking drop this fic. It's so BORING reading through the ward intros, and the PR bullshit, and the chafing under restraints, and UUUUGH. Noooooo. *genuine sadness.*
