Changing Destiny (Kancolle)

atm, JMPer isn't the biggest Sky-bully.

That would instead be the collective readers over in HP&tSGs thread.

Where Sky has triplet Saras to keep him....occupied.

Sara, the CV.

Toga, the BC who shares ALL of Sara's memories even as a CV, prior to the moment she was summoned.

Jellyfish, a shipgirl-Abyssal hybrid created by a Dr. Mengele-ish Abyssal...but who is very firmly on humanity's side, as she also has all of Sara's memories, prior to being created. IIRC, she'll be using the name of the ridge that the Battle of Saratoga took place on, but don't quote me.

The 4-way meeting (3 sets of 'fuel' tanks, and one author's head) after Jellyfish showed up in Sky's shower while everyone else was out, made for a very unique marshmellow hell.
Lexteen, who was visiting, made sure to snap several blackmail cellcam photos.

Sky was....surrounded by a lot of buoyancy. A whole lot of bouyancy. Very generous bouyancy too.

The bully-train has no brakes!

I am plotting the next chapter, incidentally. I just want to update Holding the Line at the same time, per usual. And because the outcome of Wake has direct implications for the East Indies Campaign and all.

For now, have a cute destroyer:

I do know that Sky asked about Ashigara over on Discord. This bodes ill...

Possible cause #1: Sky made a typo when asking about Ashigaru units when playing Shogun 2 (because wtf "spear wall" ability for Yari Ashigaru doesn't show us the supposed melee bonuses, how am I supposed to number crunch then???)

Glad to hear that this is still in production. I can easily see what happens at Wake having ripple effects with the rest of the IJN assignments since barring a Midway-level beating where they sink Sara and E for minimal damage, damage to or losing Kaga and Hiryu will severely strain Japanese naval capacity. They will have to pull ships to reinforce the Central Pacific to prevent additional USN attacks since their breathing space before the USN counterattacks is apparently nil.

Those ships are going to have to come from operations in the DEI since that is where they actually have available ships.

If the Japanese are forced to withdraw ships that could give ABDA enough breathing room to get their ducks in a row and put up a meaningful defense.

Now really, what does history tell us that the Japanese will most likely do in the face of setbacks? Double down with the Magic Bushido Hands. While they wait for the fleet CVs to get their airwings back in order, look for the committal of the Kongos and all the heavy cruisers they can scrounge up to go for broke at DEI.

Given all that Thompson has done to prepare for this day, it's unlikely Sara or E are going to be lost, or suffer heavy damage. It also means Lex may still play a key part in upcoming battles. It MAY happen, but we're talking golden bombs and torpedoes here. It also means that the operation against Ceylon is a no-go. It could also mean that the Doolittle raid may be scrubbed, because of increased IJN activity in the Central Pacific.

Kaga and Hiryuu are most likely to suffer damage that puts them out of action for a while. Definitely something that will cramp IJN plans for a while.

The Doolittle Raid was a desperation move by itself, a way of showing that the U.S. had a lot of fight left to Japan, the world and more importantly their own population. In this AU Pearl wasn't as destructive and the Navy is managing to agressively defend their base at Wake instead of allowing the garrison to be wiped out by overwhelming numbers, so there is no need of a suicide mission like the Tokio Raid or nuisance attacks like the incursions Enterprise made in February-March '42 instead using those same resources to target purely strategic targets.

well the nuisance raids had always been part of War plan orange, so they would likely still happen. The hole point of them was to keep the IJN chasing its tail and spread out for the years or so the USN spent building it logistics tail so that when the first counterattacks started (which was suppose to be Tarawa) they'ed be to spread out to respond.

Good point, but even then those raids were too small and caused to little damage to actually attract the attention of the IJN in meaningful ways. With the balance of forces between the US Navy and the IJN in this fic its more than possible that the US commits to raids in more strategically significative areas and stay in the area long enough to seriously bleed the local defenses and do some real damage to infrastructure.

you really can't. Bases like Rubaul and Truk are to well defended or to far into Japanese territory at this point. The USN strategy was all about playing the long game, only for the combination of strategic necessity combined with multiple egos deciding to compare dick sizes to force us into an invasion we weren't ready to pull off. Thankfully the IJN high command had next to no strategic intelligence and poured all their resources into retaking a insignificant, not to mention unusable island.

Yeah, Guadalcanal was a serious mistake that basically gave the americans the chance to fight a ground and naval battle in terms that weren't the best for either side but still better than having those same battles in other locations. I can only imagine the nightmare scenario of a counterattack of the scale of the Battle of Savo Island during the first night of the 2nd Marine division assault on Tarawa when the Marines were barely holding their positions and were a strong banzai charge away from being thrown to the sea. Without naval artillery and reinforcements during the next day who knows how many of the leathernecks would have survived?

Guadalcanal was an attempt to get the jump on the other side by both sides - both sides thought the other side had either forgotten the islands or was ignoring them and decided to take advantage of the enemy's mistake at the same time. And so, the Solomon Islands campaign happened. As it happens, that was the absolute right decision by Pearl Harbor given what Nimitz knew, and the absolute wrong one by IJN High Command.

The reasons why are really beyond my willingness to discuss at 2230, but perhaps some other time.

None other than Raizo Tanaka regarded Guadalcanal as a waste to defend, and argued strongly to pull the Japanese defense line back to anchor at Rabual. He was also openly critical of gradually feeding in reinforcements, fighting the decisive naval battles around the island, and how the logistics were handled, His outspoken criticism was why he was blamed for the failure of the campaign and put on the beach in Burma at the start of 1943, never to hold major command at sea again during the war.

Yes, Tarawa would have been far more difficult without naval gunfire and air support. What would have happened if IJN submarines were given a no limit hunting license on the invasion fleet? I mean, I-175 got in and nailed an escort carrier, then slipped away unharmed. What would have happened if a group of them went after the warships and transports? As it was, the Marines were in a world of hurt, when the low tide left them more than a half mile from the beach, because the Higgens boats couldn't get them over the exposed reefs. The Japanese forces were well dug in, and even the naval air and gunfire support available didn't do enough to suppress the opposition they faced on the beach.
