I would like to argue against USS Monaghan being a total loss, USS Shaw had one of her 5in/38 magazines detonated during Pearl Harbor OTL and we rebuilt her and she saw good service too in the Pacific.

True, but if her Machinery is still intact, which it may or may not be, depends on which magazine exploded and where the torpedo hit, if that's what caused the detonation. We might pull a Cassin and Downes with her.Depends how she got hit. If she somehow ate an air-dropped torpedo (unlikely, but possible), it would have likely broken her back, making her effectively unrepairable.
I presume you mean aft magazines? Because Shaw had a forward magazine detonation and was restored fairly soon.
Aft magazines going up would break a DD though.
Yeah, exactly. It depends which magazine exploded, if it's the forward one. Well it'll be a complete bitch to fix but it is repairable but if it's an aft magazine you might be able to salvage the forward guns and some of the machinery and not much else.
By shipgirl standard, the 'Zubian' treatment has to be all kinds of horrifying. Whisky getting a nose transplant is one thing. Going full Frankenstein is another.

We will have to wait and see how Sky depicts Naka. Because the Idol of the Fleet went through exactly that same experience as OTL Cassin and Downes.
The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 had destroyed the nearly-complete Naka in her construction dock. They then scrapped her and used her parts to build a new Naka, which is the traffic cone we all know and love.

You mean like the Clone Shepard that came out of nowhere in Mass Effect 3? IIRC he/she was used as an organ donor for rebuilding Player Shepard (who we don't actually know is the real thing or not?)
I don't remember if I made the comment here or in BelBat, but I once made the analogy of what happened to Cassin and Downes -- their outer hulls ruined and then rebuilt around their intact machinery -- as someone receiving extensive skin grafts after suffering from horrific burns.Maybe? I was thinking more along the lines of removing a dead person's healthy organs to give to somebody who has unhealthy/non-functional ones, but that doesn't really work.

What happened to Naka-chan sounds a bit more severe/extensive than that, but the general image should still be sound.
Yeah, that sounds about right.I don't remember if I made the comment here or in BelBat, but I once made the analogy of what happened to Cassin and Downes -- their outer hulls ruined and then rebuilt around their intact machinery -- as someone receiving extensive skin grafts after suffering from horrific burns.

Inspired by the image, I have this:
Utah looked at her raised hull, and the other Utah on it "Fuck me side--wait, not sideways, because that would be bad for a ship that was sideways just now..." The hull had been sideways not so long ago.
"You might want to pick a different expression of surprise then" Shipboard Utah said. "Otherwise, someone might take you up on your offer before we can experiment enough to see if we have vagina dentata or something."
"...Agreed. We need to peruse a training manual, I suppose... and I'll get the film crew to make it into a new training film for morale purposes."
Shortly thereafter, Richardson had to explain to the frothing press that "training film" was navy slang for porn films (training manuals were exactly what that implied). Thankfully the local priests were accepting of the idea of playing with oneself to determine health hazards, since navy men and the clap or other sexually transmitted diseases mixed too well, and calmed the moral protestors right down with that and the question of volunteers to go help the battleships test their various valves and orifices if they were so buttmad. Apparently in this era, the average Hawaiian was smart enough to not stick their privates into what might represent transmission gear rooms, small-tube boilers, high-speed turbines, or any other dangerous equipment. This was only remarkable in that later generations were generally less wise in the ways of the world.
Well, maybe they could even go for the HMS Porcupine treatment depending on where it was hit.True, but they could salvage the equipment and then build a new ship around said equipment and give it the same name.

BTW, that is the image on danbooru that has comments PRIOR to me spotting it & 'acquiring it' for my imgur account, which shows that some danbooru viewers were already well aware of Sky-bullying.
