The 'vague emotions' felt is explicitly the norm for all Valkyries.

So, while it is hypothetically possible that Durga can talk, it is far more likely that the protagonist has a truly anomalous core.

We have seen Anna split her thoughts into parallel tracks before, and it is explicitly Anna doing the splitting.

At this point either case is still possible, if not equally probable. That said, given that the 'Durga/War!Anna' comments have a different format from Kandakara's comments, I am inclined to believe that they are not similar events.
I was specifically referring to how Anna's thought is interrupted by a single clause in italicized bold. It implies that it wasn't her thinking that. I inferred that it was Durga commenting on how she does talk to Anna, but Anna doesn't realize.

About the Durga talking to Anna thing, back when there was mention of resuming bodily functions there was a text somewhat pushing for it until Anna became suspicious, then it backed off real quick.

Edit: Found it! It was after Anna visited the cooking club.
The alien mass shifted inside your body with every step, changing the rhythm of your pace. The standard sine waves of force on your body from you walking shifting into a complex wave. Uneven weight distribution and force exerted, center of mass no longer stable. Unacceptable.

Unacceptable.

Unacceptable.

Unaccepta- wait. You correct your Impeller slightly, change the activation thresholds for the layers cradling your Internal organs and then take another step. Your Impeller holds your stomach firm and you twist your torso around and back to test some more. Not optimal, even though your organs no longer shifted against each other, the food was still compressible and would change in properties under high pressure, shifting in phase and thus volume. However, as you could ingest around three kilograms of extra mass at maximum, the disturbance should be only moderate at worst.

Even then however, you need to find some way of ridding yourself this encumbrance over time. Your digestive system still worked. You think so anyway, it had been awhile since you last used it. It is slower than just shifting the mass into storage and stripping away all the necessary nutrients manually, but it's a natural function of your body that wouldn't take any concentration to run.

…Now how do you turn it on? Maybe-

Ba-bump

You twitch.

Ba-bump

An itch builds up in your throat and a pressure in your chest.

Ba-bump

Your mouth opens involuntarily and sucks in a huge breath of air.

Ba-bump

Muscles all over your body twitch minutely as blood vessels expand under pressure, before contracting again as the pressure relents. You can feel the pressure wave of blood moving through your body along arteries and flooding into smaller vessels.

Heart- heartbeat and breathing. Cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This isn't an intended effect of activating your digestive system.

Exhale. Your chest deflates and air rushes out, up your trachea and into your mouth and nose, whistling over your tongue and past your teeth. Inhale. The same but in reverse. This is nothing like talking, not measured or voluntary-

Compared to circulating and oxygenating your blood with your Impeller, this is loud and irregular. You try to isolate the two systems and shut them down but find the involuntary systems of your body annoying interconnected.

Normal people live like this. You should be able to adapt but…

You extend a heavy particle projector and aim it at an arbitrary point, extending your arm parallel to it.

Breath in. Heartbeat. Heartbeat. Breath out. Heartbeat. Heartbeat. Breath in. Heartbeat. Heartbeat. Breath out. Heartbeat. Heartbeat. Breath in. Heartbeat. Heartbeat. Breath out.

Your neck muscles twitch minutely every single heartbeat. Your arms tremble as muscles quiver, shifting then overcompensating to return to their previous positions thanks to the irregular supply of oxygenated blood. Every breath distorted the shape of your torso, widening your shoulders and lifting them, changing the arch of your spine. Your Impeller shifts along with your body, conforming with its changing shape. You could compensate but that would defeat the purpose of this test.

One respiratory cycle every three seconds, one heartbeat every three quarters a second. Sample size over three seconds.

Mean deviation from intended bearing for your arm is nineteen arc seconds. For a target at one thousand kilometers, you would miss by ninety two meters on average. Heavy Particle Projector in independent configuration, zero point one five arc seconds, average deviation from target at one thousand kilometers is seventy three centimeters. An uncertainty area almost ten times greater than what you could achieve without your involuntary functions.

Change test goal, 3 arbitrary bearings selected.

You bring your arm to bear on each target in turn and shift your projector to do the same.

Time taken to focus on targets until deviation reaches mean for arm; one hundred and fourteen milliseconds. Heavy Particle Projector, six milliseconds. Average time taken to acquire target increased by a factor of eight.

You shake your head in dismay at the news. In addition to the changes to your acceleration profile with the food in your stomach…

This is-
Unacceptable.

-still alright isn't it? You do not fight alone anymore and, with a nuclear reactor, the accuracy that was absolutely necessary for your energy budget is no longer one of your greatest priorities. Additionally, with the amazing breadth of data provided through the UN combat networks, the accuracy loss could be compensated if you expressed Durga to full.

A strange impression echoes from the corner of your mind that you recognised as Durga; confidence, reassurance and trust.
Don't lie to me you-

…Which is well and good speaking in terms of mitigating the downsides of activating your involuntary functions, but what benefits do they bring you?

You are not actually sure, you had initialised your digestive system to rid yourself of, or at least, more evenly distribute the weight of the food in your stomach. These additional involuntary functions, all of which can be better fulfilled through the use of your Impeller, are completely unintended side effects.

-Do other normal things-

Hm. Did this count as normal? Should you even be listening to those messages?

-!!

Well for the moment, you shut down all these unnecessary functions and eject the food to your storage space after a moment of concentration. You make a note to consider the issue in further detail later and turn to meet Instructor Meyer.

That implies Anna isn't consciously aware of Durga urging her which would match the statement that Valkyries usually just get impressions from their Cores, because only we the audience are fully aware of Durga.

It's- weird. The "Don't lie to me you-" Implies that some part of Anna is aware of what's going on, but it's not the part of her that's in the driver's seat.

This sounds like Peace and War Anna both being aware that Durga is trying to reassure them it's okay to be normal. Peace Anna thinks that's nice, but being normal doesn't seem to have any particular benefits, while War Anna thinks Durga is lying about it actually being fine and safe to be normal now. Which is understandable given how Antagonists are still around and dangerous.

We could just play WoWs too... and hunt him... and make the game unbearable... always sinking.
He'd write 20 chapters in a month out of sheer rage and frustration.

I'm not convinced there is a Peace Anna, as opposed to Anna, The Monster, and Durga, with Anna not usually consciously aware of the other two. She doesn't acknowledge thoughts from either of the other voices (though she does sometimes respond to them), so your argument that Durga talking to her would make Durga super special doesn't really apply. It's possible you're right, but I don't see any conclusive evidence.

Ok. I have been convinced. Italics or possibly -italics closed by hyphens- are likely Durga.
Bold italics are the so-called War!Anna or Monster-Anna. The Anna of her backstory archetype flavor text. Who is totally aware of Durga speaking.

...I like Durga A LOT better now. And i really need to rethink an omake idea of mine.

Wait. If Durga is the one who speaks in -hyphened italics- then can she posses Anna? Or can she just replicate Anna's voice some other way?

Last update had someone something besides Anna commenting, and since Durga's been synced with her for so long being able to splice recordings together to create those recorded messages wouldn't be that hard.

So probably both to a degree. >.>

Oh now that is interesting, and I missed it before. Anna never responded to the voices, but they both freaked out when Anna started wondering if she should listen to the messages at all. Which means that, even despite their differences of opinion, they both want her to continue "doing normal things".

Just remember that if you do this, he likes to layout on islands and/or just rush head first into things.

Hm. I wonder if that makes him Coke Zero.

...I don't think I made any argument that Durga talking to her would make Durga super special? Are you confusing me with someone else? I was arguing against the idea that Anna isn't consciously aware of Durga urging her to do stuff. The quote clearly shows the Annas responding to Durga radiating "confidence, reassurance and trust". I consider Peace Anna to be the Anna in the driver's seat, so just Anna from your perspective, and War Anna as the Monster I guess. Durga is clearly Durga.

Point being, there are three different personalities in Anna's head, including Anna herself. And Peace Anna doesn't always seem aware of War Anna's commentary, but the end of the tournament arc seems to show that she's at least aware that War Anna exists, and wants to integrate with her. War Anna said no though.

But it seems pretty clear Durga is the one responsible for those messages Anna kept getting early on in the story, so I argue that if Durga really wanted to speak to Anna in more than fuzzy emotions, she could probably just record and send messages that way.
