Ah, geez. Well, at least we went negative on how much violence there would be, so there's that at least. Hopefully we didn't just knock over the first domino that will lead t collapse. Hell, maybe this could even turn into something that actually democratizes the USSR a bit more!

Oh, saw this come in just as I was about to hit post. Trying to puzzle out whether that 88 government response role means that the government over reacted to a relatively mild protest or if they had a good response to that protest.

So importantly the Politburo thinks it's a peaceful protest and not a counterrevolution, and the response is kettling (albiet with tanks). You can take that reaction as you will but modern liberal democracies have responded worse to protests.
 
We caused a tiny little human stampede of around a hundred thousand people when the army gave out the Politburo's ultimatum to disperse.

But by not indiscriminately killing all the putschists we have shown unprecedented restraint.
