Culture Corner: Tritons

A less commonly seen but still no less citizen to Sorcerer's Deep is a race of beings born of the Plane of Endless water and have moved to the Plane of Balance, of men with gills and scales but unlike the monstrous fishmen are seemed as a harmonious hybrid. Named for the weapon and tool most of their kind regularly carry the Tritons are another fantastical aspect of the Deep, though compared to most inhabitants they don't live within it but in the waters around it. Rare is the Triton that willingly walks on land and regularly interacts with landwalkers since while they can breath water and air just fine they prefer the former and see themselves as awkward on land in general, not to mention it's important for Triton health to keep their bodies moist.

While Tritons aren't often visitors of Deep that have made the waters around it home.

Most of the Tritons that swim within the Stepstones are nomadic in nature with whole tribes freely swimming it's length and width, and sometimes even beyond to distant shores and more distant depths. However, many of the tribes view the waters around the Deep as a safe gathering place from the dangers of land and sea, and in recent times have slowly started construction of a village along the sea floor out of coral and warmed by the aptly named "fire" coral. While still too young to hold any buildings capable of allowing landwalkers to breath in many divers have described it having a natural beauty men could not easily match.

Tritons most usually deal with landwalkers either as traders within their waters or as fellow temple goers at the temple of the Merling King, who is their primary god, also located on the outskirts of the city. The latter being a place of worship specifically built to house both those that dwell in the seas and on land with access to the ocean itself.

The most common dealings with landwalkers among the Tritons is as pearl harvesters, salvagers of ancient wrecks, and ship guides on long voyages. The former two for their ability to dive great depths without worry of breathing and the latter for knowing the currents better than even the most experience sailors and as scouts against any hazards of the deep. The latter most welcome for sailors all too aware of the danger the Deep Ones and their thralls pose.

In return Tritons are fans of landmade crafts of all kinds for while thanks to the fire coral they are capable of drawing heat for smithing unless they create a air filled environment under the sea it is difficult to create most things. They are most fond of things that will not break down easily within the salty waters, and so worked gold, silver, and other metals that don't rust make for good jewelry. With magic they can even buy blades and other things that will survive for long even within water.

Tritons are also lovers of prepared food of all kinds, which is one of few reason they willingly surface in order to partake in it.

The Tritons connection with the seas cannot be understated since they know the currents better than any being born on land, move as swiftly as any fish which they hunt, and even form connections with whales and dolphins which sailors knew for generations were smarter than the average fish. Since dolphins are especially considered good luck among sailors nearly world over many in service to the Dragon King find them a sight for sore eyes when a friendly pod will swim along their ship and welcome them to port. The fact the Tritons and their allies are natural enemies of the Deep Ones makes their presence in the Deep all the more welcome considering the city's dark past with a powerful servant of theirs.

It would not be an over exaggeration to say that the Triton's hate and conflict with the Deep Ones is akin to a holy war since they are evil beings from a Realm being understanding that sees all that is not them as slaves and food. It is a blessing from the Merling King himself his children fight alongside Sorcerer's Deep and the world in general against such a threat.

It is the hope of ever good being out there that the future continues to involve the Triton and the Deep Ones failure.

[X] Plan The Truth, From A Certain Perspective
-[X] Greet him politely and thank him for granting you an audience. Play the nervous low-born and lay on a light Valeman accent.
-[X] Tell him that you have heard about the ambush on him and that you know that it was a trap for both sides. An attempt to enrage him into lashing out and causing senseless slaughter against his neighbors.
-[X] Give him some of the Mammon coins, tell him that they are tainted Devil work, and that you found them among the possessions of those responsible for the attack.
-[X] Ask him for mercy for those he took prisoner, or at least to not lash out at the clans, who were deceived into this act.
-[X] When he asks why you care about the clansfolk, make a half-assed evasion before caving in and spilling the beans.
-[X] Admit that you were in their villages and have seen how they live. Trying to survive in the barren mountains, for these inhospitable ranges are the only place where they are not hunted down like animals. You will not try to defend their actions, but you can't find it in your heart to damn them for what desperation has driven them to. They wish nothing more then to survive the next winter and their greatest fear are knights and zealots, coming to destroy with sword and fire what little they have.
-[X] "The Maiden calls for mercy upon all, but these people were never shown any. Instead we reward those who are said to do the Fathers and the Warriors work by slaying them wherever they are found. And now, in these dark days, vile things walk among us, their hearts forged from hatred and their will bent only on ruin. The true enemy walks among us unseen, fanning the flames of senseless hatred and the Seven watch silently as we tear each other apart."
-[X] Play contrite for blurting out the last part, then humbly ask again that Grafton promises not to strike at the Hill Folk or, if he brought them up, the Royces. You know more and can help him to find the true culprits, but you can't in good conscience tell him more without knowing that you bring no ruin to those undeserving of it.

Need to cut it off here, since I need a reaction. This isn't over by a long shot, but we need to stay in character and the persona of Dywen cares first and foremost about preventing pointless bloodshed.

@Massgamer Tritons are explicitly not citizens of Viserys' realm, as a group. Deep One truce loophole, and all that.

Calling the names of powers might call attention, and are you intending to call upon their teachings as something that should be upheld (maiden) and that are being perverted (f+w) and then condemning the seven themselves? Cuz that's how it kinda reads to me. It seems weird somehow.

Also, where are you going to point him when we demands to aid our actions/to know more about the foe? Someone in his position is going to want to act, imo

And I am here still wondering what the heck the Seven are doing.

I mean, we know of individual actors, Lucan gathers mages, the Maiden-Cleric does good deeds and adventures, Brienne is still a child...

But what is the overaching plan?
Why having they brought their damn Faith in line? With a structure like the Red God's faith, little as I like to admit it, Bloodraven's scheme with the pro-fey preacher in the Riverlands could have been dealt with relativly easy. But instead he stays and can gain reputation and followers.
Their individual chosen don't even seem to be on the same line, see the differences in Lucan's and [Maiden-Clerics-name]'s attitude towards mages.
What is going on, where is the power of the largest or second-largest religion in this world?

If youve got a bit of time...

Future inquisition agents (somewhat? A bit too strong honestly...)

Based on monks. Naturally.

Edit:

Actually this made me remember. @Azel This story made me remember something you said, about walls. high level npcs. Ect.

In the TDDC universe death fins Unon and Du are level 20+ epic npc fighters. They are also explicitly compared to nuclear weapons (and accompanied 24/7 by teleport capable wizards) by the DM multiple times.

And for good reason. Even one of them could probably destroy the human capital city in the span of a day.

That is how I think you should use redone not shitty Monks and other things like them. They are not for your army but your secret assassins and deadly super agents of death you send to do things the army can not or to make way for your forces. Its like Ip Man or the Matrix. You want at best only a couple because that kind of badassry works best in small elite numbers.

I really hope we get to fight Lucan soon. He'd be one hell of a sacrifice, certainly enough to get us something special.

I think that they are bringing their Faith in line. We know that there are internal power struggles going on within the Faith, and that the current High Septon is a pious and virtuous reformer.
And remember: they have to deal with nobles and Kings, and devils, and MOTHERFUCKING BLOODRAVEN BABY! YEAH! BEST-UNCLE HYPE! TURN HIS TREE INTO A SPACESHIP AND BLAST HIM INTO ORBIT SO HE CAN PERV AT PEOPLE ALL OVER THE EARTH!

Seriously though, Bloodraven is awesome.

I'm more interested in finding out what he was working towards.
Indoctrinating hedgemages is a good step in some plan, but it's not a full plan, doesn't change much by itself.
Probably just that insane and stupid "purge all mages who don't submit" plan. I really hope he hasn't just been forcing arcane casters into some sort of Adept class.
