Of Dinner and Death
Twenty Sixth Day of the Second Month 294 AC
There are more devils in Astapor than you had hoped, though not more than you had expected given the Lord of the Ninth had a free hand with those ill-fated lands for years. While those already present can hopefully deal with the temples of the Lady of Spears and stop or at least slow the deployment of 'blessed' Unsullied, you take your hand in dealing with the head of the snake, though not alone.
You bring up the matter at diner. Ser Richard agrees at once, looking relieved you are not leaving him behind again, though he does not say it in so many words. For her part, Dany is eager to be striking a blow not just against devils, but the 'Good Masters' of Astapor whose name is synonymous with cruelty. She tries not to show it in front of your mother, however, chatting instead with Garin about his children and how it is to be a new parent to a new kind of child.
As far as you can see, bringing a dead mouse out of the pantry on the vague notion that their parents would be able to 'fix it' was a small price to pay for children who were already out and about on leading strings, but apparently one of the nurses was troubled enough that she quit unexpectedly, leaving the children confused and uneasy at the change.
Meeting Teana later that afternoon, you find her much more at ease with the prospect of battling devils in Astapor than the campaign in Sarnor. Whether the latter buoyed her confidence or it is simply a matter of being more comfortable with facing a foe in the shadows of a city than in the open field, you could not say for certain.
"So how are we going to do this?" Garin asks once greetings had been been exchanged and the door closed firmly behind you, not that you fear eavesdroppers here of all places, but it is better to keep up good habits and not need them than the reverse. "The devils are not exactly going to want to come at us after we have dealt with the first few, and they can go to ground anywhere in a thousand miles almost as soon as they think it."
"The simplest answer would be to make use of what we learned from our captives to strike at their pawns and resources in ways that seem the work of ordinary agents, be they inquisitors, the Sons of the Harpy, or anyone else that does not wish to see Slaver's Bay made a vassal of Hell," you reply thoughtfully. "The question is which sorts of devils would we prefer to draw into our net, contract fiends looking to protect their pawns..." you motion to the map of the Yellow City laid out on the table, with places known to host infernal sacraments marked in red, "sorcerers protecting unhallowed ground...."
"Or warriors protecting their Unsullied allies," Dany finishes. "The latter is more likely see this all play out publicly, but it would synergize best with the other prong of the attack."
"On the other hand, being seen in Astapor might drive yet more of he Good Masters into the arms to Hell who might otherwise have clung to some shred of sense," Teana counters.
How do you choose to engage the devils?
[] Strike at their mortal pawns in the guise of a more mundane attack and wait for a reaction
[] Attack the known location dedicated to Baator and used by its agents
[] Strike at the Unsullied to help pull defenses away from the enemy's 'forge'
[] Write in
OOC: Sorry this took so long guys, I misread the vote and had to rewrite a good piece of the update because of it. Not yet edited.
