Honestly if at least one of the undead we meet doesn't look like a Dark Souls or Bloodborne monster, in either here or Qohor, I'm calling foul :p

What do you think we're doing here? We're currently trying to grave rob Nito.

Now as to Bloodborne suffs. What makes you think that they aren't high from Insight right now?

We need eyes on the inside, I'm telling you!

Anyway, we have enough eldritch already with Qohor, no need to wonder about either the material nor oniric Leng(s) right now

Speaking of Qohor, @DragonParadox, it would be cool to see how the group we sent there is doing. 🧐

  • [X] Scouting Party
-[X] The scouts will consist of all three of Teana's Shadow-Traces, plus 2d4+4 Jannis Summoned by Vee casting Summon Nature's Ally VI twice after activating her Bead of Karma (raising her caster level to 21st and the duration of her Summoned Jannis to 42 rounds, or 4 minutes and 12 seconds). Viserys will use Wild Arcana to cast Etherealness on the Shadow-Traces prior to Vee's Summoning.
--[X] As soon as the Janni are Summoned so their limited duration is not wasted, Viserys will use Miracle to place a Greater Hide from Undead (DC 33 Will save vs Intelligent Undead) spell on them and the Shadow-Traces, while Tyene casts Wind Walk on all of them to grant 60 mph flight speed.
---[X] The Jannis will render themselves Invisible, Small-sized, and Ethereal, and accompany the Shadow-Traces to explore the catacombs, especially the areas nearest to the Charnel Colossus. The Shadow-Traces will allow the Janni to do most of the scouting, Telepathically relaying what the Janni discover back to them, who will in turn relay it to Teana. They will scout in this manner until the Janni's duration expires, then the Shadow-Traces will be directed how to proceed based on what has been learned so far.

It'll be nice to see something from her perspective again, though I do wonder if anything really phases her anymore. She has to have one of the weirdest and highest stress positions in the empire at this point after all.

I mean, her regular duties involve teaching teenagers to set things on fire with their minds without anyone dying or causing significant amounts of arson. Compared to that the occasional trip to another plane of existence and/or monster hunting expedition is barely stressful. :V

I would say Teana at least considers the side-adventures every month more stressful, considering her reaction to being in a fight with murderfucking She of Many Colors herself.

Really, you don't need impress anyone after that.

Interlude DCCCXLIV: A Shadow's Courage
A Shadow's Courage

Seventh Day of the Second Month 294 AC

Teana Strycos had never enjoyed the prospect of danger for the sake of craft or lord, she never felt the shiver of excitement at the thought of unearthing secrets that she knew even Zherys did under his saturnine facade. If one were to ask the mistress of the Scholarum where she preferred to push the understanding of her art the answer would be in a well lit library and most assuredly not in an accursed ruin where the dead trod in legions upon cursed ground, or under it.

The trouble was of course that the same arcane skill she had taken up to deal with teaching and administration also made her a perfect scout for a time when a disposable pair of eyes was needed, for what could be more disposable than a shadow after all?

Down, down, down they went through the black stone as the King's voice guided them, three shadows and seven false spirits conjured of dreams and sorcery to find what had been hidden from mortal eyes, even from the dead. Yet the first hint her semblances encountered of it were not things for the eyes to see but for the ears to hear...

Weeping.

Soft sighs and heartbroken sobs all resounded through the corridors of the catacombs as though perhaps the city above was still alive and these merely those among the living descending into the domain of the dead to pay tribute, garbed in black and hiding their faces in their arms. It was only in the rare glimmer of dying torches that the mourners true nature was revealed for their were as ethereal as the sorceress' own seeming. It was only when one of these mourners raised its head for a moment, as though sensing strange eyes upon her, that the Teana witnessed the dreadful visage of murder and decay.

Slowly, as though in a dream, the specter reached out with one hand towards the seeming it should not be able to see, to sense in any way, half hidden inside a wall. "Come to pray for us? Come to pray. Sinners need prayer... Come to pray for the godless' strength to walk through the Seven Doors and back out again. Come to pray? Come pray with us."

Teana withdrew the seeming and waited breathlessly, looking through the eyes of the other seeming, but none of them noticed aught strange among the catacombs. No alarm seemed to have been set. She tried to send the false janni further along closer to where Eskil had met the 'lord' of the city. It did not return.

Once more, a seeming keeping watch on the corridor, there were no dead to croon strange requests at her.

The conjured spirit seemed too cease existing halfway down the corridor, not bleed, not wither, not burn, simply 'be not', like a mummer drawn behind the curtain from where the audience stood.

Well damn me and damn this place with me, Teana thought, setting her seeming to glide forward. I'm not here and I am under mind wards, might as well try.

For the briefest instant she glimpsed a poison river flowing around a poisonous shore, another Sphere she knew with a flash of arcane insight, then the seeming died, having tried to cross over from the world her body was in.

Opening her true eyes to look upon the King and his companions she recounted one last thing about her visit: "The catacombs are overlapping some other realm. I'm not sure if it's in the Abyss or Hell, maybe Abaddon considering the daemon earlier."

"I don't think it's any of those things," Princess Daenerys replied. "I think it's another sort of tomb, the realm of a dead god."

"So we can't approach this thing without literally falling off the face of the earth," the King mused, a thread of frustration to his words.

"I think we might need that army now, Your Grace," Ser Lonmouth offered respectfully. "We aren't talking this bunch down."

Teana had to sniffle a laugh, half in relief, half at the sheer absurdity to hear the darkness below described in terms one would most often hear associated with a crown of rowdy guildsmen on the streets.

What does the King decide?

[] Try to press scouting
-[] Write in how

[] Move on to another city
-[] Write in which

[] Return to Imperial territory and begin preparing the military advance

[] Write in

OOC: I would have preferred a wraith with a more human body and just a monstrous face, but hopefully that is good enough to get image across.

I believe that was the last one we were not writing off off the bat?

Gotta plan things now, lessie whom we'll eradicate first.
I reckon the Void-affected Undead are the first target.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, @DragonParadox.

Damn, gotta cross Kasath off the 'maybe' list.

If we get the army, should we strike here or in Sarnath first?

I heavily doubt that two dead gods have woken up and are acting independantly, so it's more likely the same one, with a remnant in Sarnath and a connection to Khasar?

Gornath is also a target. If that one is handled before Kasath, the Charnel Colossus, which may in fact be the remnants of a dead god, may dial back the massive hateboner enough to be reasonable. It's a longshot, but still worth considering, IMO.

Well, we should probably deal with the cities in the order of Sarnath (gains Mardosh's assistance?) -> Kasath (find a way to free the awoken dead from their bindings and gain their help?) -> Gornath (deal with the Rat King).

This seems the most logical progression we should take given the associated progression of our interactions with the dead. We have Sathar's assistance with the first, Mardosh seemed inclined to ally with us if we dealt with that also, then we could tackle Kasath, and finally finish with Gornath.

That would waste the least amount of time and conserve the most of our resources, I feel, though with the unfortunate side effect of having started with the most dangerous and difficult nut to crack. Though they all seem like they'd be a pain in the ass to deal with in some respects.

@DragonParadox If what I'm getting here is right, anyone that crosses the threshold literaly dies? Or were spirits and remote magical seemings just falling apart when crossing over?

This could merit more experimentation, like someone undead crossing the threshold. Unless anyone who crosses is literally transported away and can't actually just casually cross back over.

Optionally, yeah, we could technically deal with Gornath before Kasath, which might have some effect on how we approach things there.

Everyone crossing that boundary ends up in another plane of existence. Teana's shadows melt away if separated from her body by planar boundaries.

There's precedent for Undead monsters to reconsider dealing with us, via Armelath. Overwhelming force and power tends to open doors in negotiations when otherwise there would only be conflict.

Gornath is the least likely to interfere when we attack the other cities and taking Sathar secures our alliance with the cities we talked to.

And as a very long shot, dealing with the dead god in either Sarnath or Kasath might solve or migate the problem in the other city, if it is the same power behind both, so we can get one more against Gornath.

Okay, we are stealing that god's magic mojo and that god's realm.

The question would be how to purify that realm, though.

[X] Return to Imperial territory and begin preparing the military advance

If we're voting to return, can we settle on a target first so it becomes more of a decision on what our order of battle should look like?
