Interlude DCCLXI: City Under the Brazen Throne
City Under the Brazen Throne

The following is the introduction to a report written mostly in an eclectic mix of Low and High Valyrian with the odd word of Abyssal thrown in when describing arcane phenomenon or a particularly vicious curse. Maelor's handwriting has not gotten better since Dany taught him three years ago.

The City of Brass is a place tied in knots against itself. It's older than the gods, or some of them at least, but by being a crossroads of trade it's constantly awash in new ideas and ways of doing things. It's a place of strict laws that mandate death and worse than death for more things than I can lay down here on paper, yet it works not because of its laws but almost in spite of them. The Sultans have apparently always been at least a little bit crazy, the saying in the city goes 'because only the mad try to mount Iblis' throne', but the actual bureaucracy that runs the place grinds on sure as the mint pours souls into brass. That brings us to the Three Pillars of Power upon which the Brazen Throne rests.

First is the Office of Sublime Works, they collect the taxes and make sure the buildings don't collapse on top of folk, unless you are in the slums. They will take all kinds as long as you are a free citizen with a clean record, though generally the more efreeti blood you have in you the more likely you are to get to the top.

Second is the Brazen Hosts, which is basically everyone whose main job is to kill other folk or threaten. That includes the Mameluke, slave soldiers who form the backbone of the army, the Eternal Guard, which is made up entirely of efreeti and a few asura who like the service of the Brass Bastard better than the other Bastard down below, the Iron guard where you get most of the giants and giant-kin, though you can find all sorts as long as they think they are hard enough, and the Burning Dervishes, mostly janni and irfit who are raised from childhood into the mad service of the Sultan as a God of War Fire and Strength.

Third are the are the wizards. They don't really have a fancy name all together other than 'those fuckers that toss scary spells' because they don't have a unified command. They have sort of a Scholarum-like system at the bottom with apprenticeship at the top. There's three of them too.

The faction with the most pull is the Guild of Brass Shapers. They run the Brass Forges and the mine and make the arms and armor for the Sultan's armies, as well as his golems in brass, steel and adamantine. There's a lot of folk watching them carefully on account of all that power, including old Brass-for-Brains himself. The Forgemaster is supposedly about as high in his favor as it's possible to get right now and supposedly aided his rise to power, even if most folk don't know for sure how that happened or when. History has a habit of getting re-written around there. We're pretty sure the spirit of Iblis didn't show up to grown him with brass and fire. So anyway, Brass Shapers mostly use necromancy and transmutation and sometimes the lines blur with Living Brass being metal and screaming souls all at once.

Speaking of Iblis and sanctioned craziness, the order with the most wizards is called the Flame of Iblis, they shape and send out the Sultan's battle wizards, whether it's lighting the spark of magic in them or hammering spells into their heads. They are also closest to the Dervishes in worshiping the Sultan and that makes them proud as sin. They're the most likely to call and bind fiends in battle or just study. A few of their masters even conjure hellfire according to a pretty good source, though thankfully the secret didn't spread far yet.

Leaving the sanest for last, there's the Order of the Wall. According to their own records their order raised the golden walls before the city was tarnished to brass. Most of their magics are warding and divination like you would expect, though they've got fewer real archmages than the other sorts. Their great works are almost all ritual work and their greatest strength is probably their library, by far the largest section of the Arcane Repository which other mages pay dearly to gain access to. This is the order you are most likely to find ifrit tieflings and other sorts of mortals climb high in. Old Silas doesn't have a drop of fire in his veins and he's a member in good standing, master of his craft. That can make other wizards take them less seriously.

Of course the Pillars have to stand on something too, the folk that carry the whole sorry mess on their backs. Lowest of the low are the slaves, they can get lucky with a kind master or one who values their skills, but this isn't the Peerless Empire and as long as they breed faster than they get killed the Brass Bastard doesn't care. Next are the Foreigners, that doesn't mean folk that just walked in the gate yesterday but those who personally gained or inherited the right to live and work under the Dominion, they can rise to true citizens by serving the Brazen Throne 'faithfully and with distinction' for a thousand and one years, either personally in case of the long-lived or as a family for mortals. Of course, whether you served well enough to make the tally depends on whoever your boss is, which means it depends on the size of your bribe more often than not.

Then there's the Citizens, most of them are efreeti with other kinds of spirits filling in all, but a tiny fraction are those who managed to rise that far as mortals. None of the city's aristocracy is anything but efreeti, though devils and asura are honored according to their powers and the favor of the Brass Bastard.

OOC: Summoning next, I could not think of a way to add that to a report update. Hopefully Maelor's voice adds a bit of color to this rather than being distracting. Also I'd like to add thanks here for @Artemis1992 who wrote up some of the fluff for the mage factions months ago and of course made sheets for quite a few of them.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

So it would have graphic profanities, I see.

Seriously speaking, we aren't going to give him a castle if he can't read shit. Intrigues would demolish him.
Eh, he'll get there. Sorcerer's Deep gives you a +4 bonus to your mental stats, so he can beg and skive to get tutors, be clever enough to realize why he needs them, and smart enough to learn his letters fast.

For everything else he can ask the Inquisition and Administration for "help".

Part MMMCDXLXIV: A Call in Light and Darkness
A Call in Light and Darkness

Thirtieth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

The month's summoning had of course included devils both as potential recruits and simply to deny their services to your enemies, but it had also been filled with firsts, some more successful than others.

13 Salikotals (117 HD)
9 Ink Devils (Unaffiliated)
9 Accomplice Devils
2 Dogai (Servants of Asmodeus)
3 Lead Devil
2 Harvester Devils (Servants of Mammon)
3 Anygavhaul
3 Phistophilus (39 HD) (Servants of Asmodeus and Mephistopheles respectively)

Spirits of fire had come gladly to your call and a full two thirds of them had agreed to remain in Everfire Dale working to smelt metals mundane and magical in exchange for feasting upon kindling rare and precious in the Eternal Furnace. The elementals of water and earth had been less enthusiastic in taking your bargain, either due to your own nature or simply because irrigation and mining were less interesting prospects you could not say, but only four of the former and five of the latter were interested enough to linger in your realm.

7 Medium Fire Elementals (SD metalworking support)
4 Medium Water Elementals (irrigation works support)
5 Medium Earth Elementals (mining industry support)

Attempts by both you and Lya to summon the embodiment of life and vitality had gone even more poorly. Every one of them found the world of form a dark and lonely place where the power they held the most kinship to was locked in a prison of flesh which they had no interest in sustaining by aiding the Houses of Healing.

Thankfully you had more luck with the fearsome lejnths and sly hellcats. Though the former are at home amid the chaos and slaughter of the Blood War and initially expressed disdain for a world so peaceful as this one the temptation of facing new foes beyond even the twisted fecundity of the Abyss to birth persuaded all but one of them to at least stay a full moonturn before deciding if your service was to their liking or not. The hellcats who remained had no such reservations, the prospect of hunting new prey and learning more of the mortals who dared to sunder devils from Hell was more than enough to tempt them into staying.

"Shall we lounge upon your feet as we do His?" One whispered in your mind. It takes you a moment to realize they meant Asmodeus himself.

11Lejnths (Trial Run)
19 Hellcats

Yet not all those you called forth these past days have been of darkened soul. With Zathir's aid you called to some of those he still counted adopted daughters of his heart. Lillend, the bards and poets of Lost Elysium. No sooner did one appear before you that you saw the kinship the young god had spoken of, for her wings shimmer with every color of the rainbow and her serpentine coils drape gracefully over the marble. Yet there is a part of her not as the young god recalls from brighter days. The spirit bears no harp but a blade of adamantine shining cold in the mage-light and cold is the gaze in a face ever-young but marked by sorrows beyond count as she asks: "By what knowlege do you summon me sorcerer and for what purpose?"

"He-Who-Was-Jazirian shared your name with me, holy one, in the hopes that you would once again teach mortal men the beauty and magic of song. Much there is broken and much in need of protection..." you nod to the sword still gripped in her hands. "Yet in the hearts of mortals hope abides to build a better future in this age of reawakening magic."

"Pleasant words skillfully spoken," the winged spirit replies warily. "And truthful for I sense above us One of whose freeing I had heard only in whispers, yet duty weighs upon me as it does over all the embattled children of Elysium to preserve what we can from wreck and ruin. Do I have your pledge that for each of us who linger upon this mortal realm you shall send in our place greater strength to battle those accursed and forsaken?"

What do you reply?

OOC: You guys are trying to summon from among the (relatively speaking) very few azata remaining so I could not just gloss over their price.
