Interlude DCCLVI: In the Dark
In the Dark

Twenty First Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

Tzi could not say how much time passed since they had been taken. There were no bells down here in the dark, only the clinking chains and the voices of the damned, harsh, cold or worst of all strangely bell-like, alluring. They had come for Ironfist first, maybe because of the hook hand, maybe they didn't like the cursing. It had taken him a long time to stop screaming... The laughter was worse.

At least Sariq had died trying to escape, where he'd kept the lockpick Tzi would never know. She'd hoped he would teach her more than his tricks eventually. There had been blood in her eyes after that, dripping through her bars above her. He had said it was Sariq's blood. He never lied. Why would you lie when you have all the power?

"What do you want?!" That was the first time she had screamed herself horse, it wouldn't be the last time. The cold was worse than then fire. There had been something magical about cold once, something forbidden. The efreeti hated it and Tzi hated efreeti so he told herself she liked cold.

She hated, hated, hated it.

She hated the healing more.

"Surrender the Cypher. Tell me... me... me..." the voices in the dark called with hideous gentleness. "Tell us and you will be free of the chains of flesh, of your own imperfection, never know fire, never known cold, perfect, true, form reflecting spirit. Let us know the truth and you will know yourself."

Tzi would have told them whatever they wanted to know, but she didn't know what that was, didn't know if she was waking or dreaming, if it even mattered in this nightmare. That was when she realized they were talking to Agha and she could hear them somehow. Magic maybe, but why would Agha waste a spell letting her listen in? Why not do something, burn them, cut them, kill them? Why not kill me?

She still listened, it was better than the clinking chains, better than the silence. There had been something among the Fakir's haul, something the chained ones wanted, or needed maybe, something they were sure the Ash-Bloods still had. "Surrender your master's name and you will be spared, refuse and we will break the girl's spirit and mold her flesh. She is precious to you, yes? Her screams loudest in your ears?"

So it was the captive discovered her blood could still run cold with fear. They didn't know the Stone-Eye's name, they hadn't even looked for it for fear of what they might be getting themselves into. Tzi would have laughed if her throat hadn't been raw from screaming. So this is how I fucking die, killed by a bunch of freaks with chains and whips for some secret I never knew. She had no doubt that she would die even if Agha revealed whatever they were looking for. They had seen the frost fiend conjure ice against Agha's fire. He wouldn't be able to let them live knowing that. Unless they turn us into something that couldn't betray them like Ironfist

A moment later she felt Agha die as surely as she had felt Sariq's blood on her face. Fire burned through her mind, like a star being kindled, but this time it was different, it wasn't just trying to hurt her, there were lines, symbols, whispers all jumbled together and not. Spells, rituals, last of all ward schematics.

How the fuck to I know what that is? Tzi wandered distantly. It didn't matter, she knew the words to undo the manacles binding her to the cold. Maybe I can get one of them to kill me by trying to get away?

At first she crawled, every joint and muscle protesting the movement, but Tzi had always been good at pushing aside pain, she stumbled along the wall into the light of the coldfire. Why hadn't anyone of them found her yet? She wondered if this was another of their games. Maybe that's what they meant about breaking my spirit?

The girl stumbled right into the arms of a black winged angel. Some part of her insisted it was a devil but she didn't care. "I suspect the girl's mind holds what the kython were after, though it sounds rather raw from learning it through some form of thought transference..."

Tzi tried to listen, but the words flowed together and she fell into unconsciousness for the first time in what felt like eternity without pain.

What do your agents do about Tzi?

[] Try to magically extract whatever knowledge the kyton were after

[] Wait for her to heal and persuade her to share the information
-[] Write in

[] Write in

OOC: Hopefully the above is clear enough on what happened in spite of the fragmentary nature of the retelling inherent to describing torture and sensory deprivation in the first person. If something is unclear, however, just ask.

[X] Wait for her to heal and bargain for the information.
-[X] At this point you're not even sure what she has, but you can promise a few baseline things, safety chief among them, and some wealth. You will deal fairly with her if it turns out to be good, though, or leads to good things.

Damn, the Ash-Bloods for wrecked. I guess they won't be useful underworld contacts, after all.

[X] Crake

I still don't know what they were after, but the rest was clear.

Holy shit, this girl is going to have nightmares until she dies.

Not necessarily. She could just hire the memory eaters living in our harbor to feast on those bad memories. The baby illithid things?
Those things are such a massive medical coup for us, if you think about it. Some traumas can't be gotten over, no matter what... unless you don't have any attachments to those events whatsoever.

hmmm what did we get in terms of bodies and loot? did we get the bodies of the ash-bloods and kytons? what did they have stashed here?

@Goldfish I think or CoB crew deserve some upgrades! And maybe some new assets.
There is some stuff we can get them soon, but most upgrades on their gear would require them to be in SD while it is being worked on. Now isn't a good time for them to be in the CoB without critical pieces of gear.

I'll put together a care package for them once I get back to my computer. Between stuff in the Armory and items we can enchant for them, we should be able to do right by them until they come in our of the cold.

So I might get this up now, feeling jumpy and anxious over the coronavirus again (more than usual) so I might not be able to get a third update up today.

I don't want to write something just for the sake of writing it. De-stressing method or no I try to keep up quality for you guys to read.

I'll try to get myself back in a writing mood, but no promises.

Take care of yourself first, as always. We will be here anyway.

So, to all the rest, and specially @egoo, time to pull the dank memes?

Don't push yourself, dude. Writing won't be fun or stress relieving if you force it.

Dorne has been added to The Chart.

Eventually I will add those blurbs I promised describing our interactions with each House, though I still want to get the Iron Islands and the Westerlands and Vale on there.

More like you have House Martell on your side and they are good about controlling their vassals. They got them to stay on side against Aegon and his sisters after the Field of Fire. Compared to that taking the side with dragons is a lot easier to manage.

It is rather impressive (disbelievingly so) that they were able to keep the vassals under control when the entire countryside was burning. I would have expected some jackass sellout willing to do so.
