Hmmm.

Theres also arguably? a feudalistic angle here.

Most of the people who worship a god wont actually see jack all from them. At least not with any kind of directness.

If he gets people worshipping stormy they probably wont start getting hot fresh blessing served to them.

But Stannis would. Much like reaping the wealth of his smallfolks labor for Robert, and keeping some for himself. He would (almost certainly) be given some divine power to make use of.

The 7 are never showing up, and the Old Gods want blood, not worship. He even got this opportunity the same reason he got his current position. He was born to the right family.

As an aside. @DragonParadox is Stannis aware of what weve been doing with Roberts out of wedlock children?

[X] Yes, the knowledge will serve him well
Bottom line, we'll tell him we have "plans" to fix the state of affairs. He trusts us enough at this point to take us at our word, I reckon.

You guys have not really been doing anything with them as far as I'm aware. I mean you did teach that one history lesson to Joffrey disguised as Pyrcelle and you gave Myrcell pleasant kitten dreams but that is not really something to recount to Stannis.
I remember use kidnapping/hiring some of his kids for security reasons?

Absolute madlad, we are. I wonder what his parents would think if they learned we took more interest in the quality of his upbringing than they do?

More than risk of breaking from the burden of the knowledge, he will feel betrayed if we don't tell him first change we get.

Where are we going to place the Heart Tree when we move it? I still want to plant it in Fallen Nirvana, but that would require a few days trip with the Gith, to visit a Fortress city.

I would like to do that, it's been too long since we have just been on an adventure, sure it would end with a bit of politics, but going though Nirvana, fighting some random encounters, and generally having fun, would be great in my opinion.

Oh, you mean Robert's actual children, his bastards? Stannis does not really have much reason to care about them. I mean if he saw one of them in need he would offer help out of familial obligation, but all in all he would rather not think about the living breathing consequences of Robert's dereliction of duty.

Sounds about right.

My first instinct was to lie. Or at least to ask him if he's sure he wants to know (warning him that the knowledge is horrible and depressing). At the very least, we could ask him not to share that information, and later reassure him that we're working on providing a hotfix eventually.

Alternative answer : because unlike a concept, a God has additional power of its own that it can use to help you. Prayers can be answered, angels and spirits can be sent to provide aid, and although such aid is unreliable it can sometimes be significant.

Thoughts? This seems better than springing depressing news on poor Stannis, who is already not in the best headspace and who isn't actually emotionless (even though he likes to fake it).
Furthermore, telling him this now suggests that we were hiding it from him before, which isn't a very good look.

Stannis doesn't like the idea of lying with intent to deceive, rather than withholding information that obviously not everyone is privy to. There are such a thing as secrets, and there's also the obvious concept that knowledge can cause harm to others if it is made freely available, which this definitely counts.

Stannis is mis-characterized as draconian, but it's just that. A mis-characterization. He has a firm concept of what justice is, but he cleaves to it in a way that is near inhuman, because it is how he tethers himself to the world which doesn't really make much sense to him as it does to others.

@DragonParadox, back me up here.

I'm against this. We don't have time for this in the near future. A visit to Nirvana for the first time is anything but quick, and we should be focusing a lot more on Prime Material. We just got done with a huge trip to the Plane of Water.

It's not quick but it's not that long either, and frankly I just tire of the Prime Material, at least when it's interacting with places we don't really get anywhere with, things like incorporating Lorath into our empire is fun, but while dealing with the Golden Company was necessary, I simply detest Yi Ti, it's one of the most annoying places, we have visited during this quest.

There's also the fact that too much of Prime material things feel like holding actions, were we are more making sure the status quo stay as it is, instead of changing things.

This is one of the many times where we'll just have to disagree. Prime Material is more important for us because it's literally our backyard in terms of proximity, and making sure it doesn't go to shit is a big priority. Extraplanar jaunts, while fun at times, aren't as relevant for our goals.

Yeah from what Viserys has seen Stannis would understand the notion of 'state secrets' as it were. There is a reason the king has a Master of whispers and it is to deal with things you do not just tell everyone about.

That might be kind of true, but I'm not just playing this quest to fulfil our goals, I'm playing to have fun, and too much Prime Material stabilizing, lessen my enjoyment of this quest.

And aside from that, Nirvana is relevant to a lot of things, we still have to deal with the whole old gods want revenge on the Seven thing, and while a part of that is getting them some revenge, another part is also focusing their rage on more convenient targets, their rage at the Seven, got lessened in favor of hatred of the Void, just from seeing Hellven though the Ravens our staff summon, having a permanent reminder of the destruction the Void has inflicted, in the form of a Heart Tree in Nirvana, should do a lot to get some of the old god hivemind, to redirect their rage at the Void instead of the Seven, which give us more leeway when taking Westeros.

Yes I don't know how much it will matter, but I'm sure it will matter some, and spending a week or 2 in Nirvana, seem worth it for having an easier time, negotiating what retribution we have to rain down on the Seven when we take Westeros.

This is why I said this is just one of those times where we're going to disagree, dude. My idea of fun isn't constantly going off the plane for random adventures while our overarching goals sit on the back burner.

Nirvana is relevant to insanely long-term goals, not now.
