I'm wondering how Volantis works. Is Zherys' position now hereditary? Or will local potentates elect someone ?
Not that Zherys ever expects to die (AFAIK he no longer ages), but considering our opponents...

Zherys plans to live forever so he is entirely fine with a technically non-hereditary position. Also he has seen so many blood heirs squander someone's legacy that is is rather hesitant to have one.

Zherys' position is non-hereditary. But practically speaking it's unlikely we'll ever grant it to anyone else, unless he experiences soul death.

I'm looking forward to seeing the consternation from officials in Yi-Ti when Fen is selected to serve as one of our envoys to their nation. First when they see that "he" is a young, unknown scribe of no importance, then when it is discovered that "he" is in fact a she, and finally when they work out that she is the black sheep of an important general's family.

It's gonna be great.

That is definitely a thing that is not happening...

The usual, almost trite scandal aside, this would be a considerable loss of face for the general in question and we're not really sure if we want to use that reveal as a blunt force weapon to his reputation (if he's an enemy) or if we want to take a more subtle hand at threading that needle for some favor.

TBH Fen's happiness with the situation is truly secondary, but she's been helpful enough to get a fair shake from us, so I wouldn't forward a plan specifically to screw her over.

You know, the dragonpens kind of learn everything their masters ever work on with them, right?

Imagine if someone stole Viserys'?

It's a fun and unusual quest prompt: someone stole [important person's] pen, go out and discreetly recover it.
Maelor: "Kids these days, they don't know what it was like back in my day. Not a bear ass hunting quest to their name. No, they get to track down missing important Calligraphy Wyrms, walk Vee's pet Velociraptor, and weed Embra's skygarden....*grumble grumble grumble*

Maelor: "You kids get off my lawn! I have a Dire Fiendish Wintertouched Mythic Bear under there, germinating for the Old Gods."

Aww, yeah, that makes sense. Oh well. 😢

Insofar as there could be said to be precedent for studies into the arcane sponsored by the state and paid for by the treasury, they were those of Old Valyria and perhaps Sallosh of the warforged Anu (I have trouble understanding this. Does the narrator think Sallosh belongs to Anu? Or does he think that Anu was in charge of the state-sponsored magic there?), in the former case more a matter of standardizing and spreading the discoveries of various organizations and cabals and in the latter a purely academic system of those little concerned with the practicality of their work, perhaps as a manifestation of the ever widening gulf of failing magic. All this Akneac of Aspheaven had learned in his studies, both among the Disciples in Mantarys and later coming to Sorcerer's Deep after what they were now calling the Crimson Accords, whereby Manatrys and Tolos would form the easternmost expanse of King Viserys' dominion, but the more he read into the history of the world before the Doom the more he realized how secretive the mages of old had been, how greedily they horded (should this be hoarded?) lore that soon grew hollow and bitter as ash.
[...]

"Again!" the corporal in command called out in a voice used to endless drills, trained to carry in battle. Again the spell was cast and again by the banner was rebuffed, even more times and Akneac as most pleased by the moment. (This part of the sentence is strange. "even more times" doesn't feel grammatically correct, and "as" is certainly a typo of some sort) A fine day's work.
@DragonParadox, I had trouble getting through this old interlude, and I've bolded a typo and two sentences I'm not sure I can understand.

Some of them would use that title even if you sent the Zathir to come down from the heavens and negotiate a trade deal. The sheer weight of cultural expectation is not to be underestimated.
What if we bribed Yss to participate in addition to sending Zathir, had them served by dozens of strong Celestials, and had all our Valyrian dragons in the sky, would they still treat us as a joke then, how much do we have to show off our might, to knock it though their thick heads, that Yi Ti is going to end up the junior partner in any relationship with us, if we don't downright annex them.

I'm genuinely curious, exactly how much awe is it going to take, to force them to reevaluate the idea that outside of Heaven itself, nothing can surpass Yi Ti?

  1. The narrator believes that Sallosh is figuratively Anu's since the warforged is the only tangible remnant of that age 'Anu's Sallosh' is here contrasted with the living Sallosh that's a colony of the empire
  2. Should be as many times not even more times

The statement @DragonParadox made is grandiose but what he actually means is that the people of Yi Ti, like China, have a lot of their identity tied up in cultural hegemony.

If anything challenges their world view, like all foreigners being barbarians with pretensions or even delusions of grandeur, depending on how mighty they "view" themselves, it literally twists their mind into a Gordian knot.

Too much of their heritage is wrapped up in the idea that they're the only true civilization in the world worth caring about, foreigners have neat trinkets or for the more charitable some worthwhile goods, but I imagine only eccentrics are actually consuming great quantities of western culture.

We had to mass import western culture IRL by forcing it on them. The same would be true here if we bought a large amount of land in the foreign quarter and broadcasted our state-sponsored mass media there.

Alright, I get ya, @everyone, there's no big desire to deal with the Drunken God beyond having Inquisition keep tabs on him as per regulations.

A situation not altogether different is one we have with the Blind God of Lorath.
We'll be subjugating the city in the next turn or so - shall we do the following?
[] While you are in Lorath meeting the ruling princes - attempt finding the priests of the Blind God, or even communing to him directly.
-[] His tenets may clash somewhat fierce with the general outlook spread by your Empire (depending on whether or not their beliefs include Fiends, and other supernatural entities as "sacred" as they believe all men and beasts to be), but, since it is widely known that his religion is mostly dead, perhaps he can bring something of use to your Empire still?
If the Deity is desperate and lacks followers, we can bargain from a position of strength.
If he has a cult, we have to ensure they don't go about sabotaging our efforts in bringing Lorath in - we are always at dice's mercy, after all.

Adding the above to 12th month's MAs. Yay or nay?
We have that old-ass medallion of his to call him over with (Miracle FTW), no need for any existing clerics even.

@Goldfish Speaking of which, Valyrian has inter-changability between dialects, so localization isn't as necessary for our MirrorVision network broadcasts. Once we have recorded broadcasts available we can even background localization the old fashioned way, even.

But for Yi Ti we can have some kind of translation effect on all spoken words coming out of the display we set up there?

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that being an issue for the MirrorVision, but of course language would be a significant barrier.

@DragonParadox, a constant Tongues effect on an item would cost. If we built that into one of our MirrorVision mirrors, the price would go up from 2880 IM to 8820 IM, with the multiple effect tax. Would that be enough for a MirrorVision mirror capable of translating the audio to Yi-Tish?

Tongues is designed to let one person speak and understand multiple languages not to have a device translate what multiple people are saying. An effect to cast tongues on every actor on stage would be considerably more expensive but doable.

Maybe a Tongues item? It would be worth it, and could be used for different broadcasts.
