A Blade's Reflection

As far as all his neighbors could tell, Sydell was a simple man.

He got up early every morning and went to his work in the fish market, the bountiful waters and fair weather The Deep had been blessed with meant that ships carrying tons of fish arrived at the port all day, every day, which meant that work that was previously done by the crew or their families now required specialized workers to keep up with the supply and demand.

Men like Sydell worked tirelessly gutting, cleaning and processing fish to be sold in mass to merchants, who then salted it, smoked it, brined it or sold it to the inns to be consumed fresh. The only remarkable thing about him was how quick and efficient he was with his knife, which earned him a bit more pay than most, but not so much that the most experienced workers could not match him in a good day.

During his break, he bought the same mug of beer and the same meal from the same merchant, his colleagues remarked that he did not speak much, but was good company all the same.

As far as the world could tell, Sydell was a very simple man indeed.

They would be right, but simple does not mean one does not hide secrets, and it certainly does not mean one is harmless.

The blade of The Thirteen was only trusted as much as he was because he was indeed very simple, and very good at keeping secrets.

He was also very dangerous.

Born and raised in the "Greatest City that Ever Was or Will Be" he always knew that such greatness was as fragile as a blade of glass, the "Garden of Bones" was both a reminder to outsiders and invaders that failing to pay proper respect to the kings of the city meant certain death, and also a reminder to the people of the city that their isolation was as much a danger to them as it was to their enemies, the sands would not care.

In the name of preserving that greatness he had done terrible things, the city needed the trade to survive, and it needed the slaves to produce food, and it needed to always appear safe and powerful or else all would realize how fragile everything was, and it was worth fighting for.

He could have been one of the Sorrowful Men, and in many ways he was, but he was always meant as a more personal weapon, first for his master and then, when his master rose as one of the kings, for The Thirteen as a whole, as a peace offering to the others, wary of how he had raised.

When the magic had returned he had gained some of it, "Lesser but useful" the Warlocks had called it, and had offered him their lip-staining concoction, which he took once and never again, for he greatly disliked what it did to his head.

Magic to pass unseen, even in crowded areas, keen senses that allowed him to hear and see more than normal men, and finally the ability to keep track of individuals regardless of their distance to him, while being able to slip similar abilities from others had made him a valuable tool to The Thirteen.

In their name, and that of his city, he had slain rebellious slaves, troublesome travelers and even creatures that he did not know the name of.

He had also killed the families of those that had threatened the order of the city, he had killed one of the Kings when his greed had exceeded his love for the city, he had even killed a Warlock, for "Straying too far", what that was he did not care.

Now the enemies of the city lain in foreign shores, and the responsibility to keep track of them fell to him, he had let himself be captured and sold as a slave in a ship that was doomed before he had left his city. His "rescuers" broke his chains and brought him back, he had expected to have to pay them for his release, but instead he had been given some gold and left to make his way in the city.

One of the sailors had introduced him to a cousin of his, who got him work processing fish, he did not know how the Warlocks had managed to get the messages inside the guts of the fish, or how they made sure the merchants bought the right barrels with his reports, but it worked and thus he did not question it.

But he slowly began to question other things, the people of this city were strange, and not only because some of them were much taller, much smaller or much hairier than the people he knew, but because they were kind. The woman he bought his bread from had always slipped him a few pieces more when he had just arrived and pretended to not have much coin, and still did from time to time when she had some left at the end of the day, the workers from the market had given him beer when he knew they had to work long hard hours for what coin they had, the children were left to play in the streets instead of having to carry burdens or help in some other way. Was this how slaves, or former slaves always were? Welcoming because being kind to strangers made them all more likely to survive? Or was the city itself, the lack of the reminder of death beyond their doors, and the fierce battle for resources that made them soft?

The city was strange too, it lacked the grand walls he had grown used to, the buildings mostly lacked the ornaments carved by generations of families wishing to parade their wealth, the people itself did not dress as beautifully or with the abundance of gold and jewels that he had associated with civilized life, but it compensated in other ways.

There were no sick to be seen anywhere in The Deep, the houses of healing saw to that, the streets were clean and even the places that in other cities would have been slums did not smell of refuse, he knew lone women could take a walk alone after hours and arrive safe at their homes, even the poorest did not go hungry and the streets themselves bustled with magic, had the Warlocks hoarded all of these treasures for themselves, or where they not as great as they seemed?

One morning, the man that employed him decided to reward him for his hard work, he had paid for a visit to the house of mirrors, "That he could see his future, or that which he desired most", he had rejected it at first, but the jeers of the people that worked with him convinced him that the risk of being discovered in that place of magic was less than risking his cover by refusing this "boon", so he followed.

"It's right in there, all paid for, just walk in front of the mirrors and ask your question, the mages will take care of the rest"

He walked in front of the array of mirrors, reflecting each other into infinity, the possibility was there for him to see whatever he desired.

But he desired nothing, all his life he had always done what was needed, not what he wanted, and confronted with the question he also realized that for the first time in his life he did not know what he was fighting for.

He broke down crying, his friends carried him home and did not press when he could not answer their questions.

The following morning he turned himself to the inquisition, maybe they would have a use for a broken blade.

OOC: probably won't be canon as i just dont know enough about how Qarth works in ASWaH, but sure was fun to write about that hypotetical "Spy decides he likes our city more than wherever he came from".
Damn, dude. Very interesting new character and his introduction was super smooth.

In completely unrelated news, I've begun working on a proposal for the 11th Month turn plan in the Spreadsheets.

Most of this is just carrying over the previous months already paid-for actions which would then continue until completion, or filling in spaces for others.

Hero unit actions are basically at this point just suggestions.

Though @Goldfish I am going to need Tyene or pretty much anyone that can replicate a spell like Brainspider or Modify Memory to complete the Mercenaries action in Pentos.

Mostly because it would give us more levies to train, more MAA to use for garrisons, and 3,000 more elites which is almost enough to finish a 6th Legion... I think. My math might be a bit iffy. It'd be a completed outfit by the end of the next turn, anyway.
I'll try to chime in in greater detail today...

Basically, we will have 2 large Intrigue actions (Asmodeus' Cult in Slavers' Bay and rooting out spies and mages of GC in Yi Ti) for next month.

Also need to send someone to scout out the Shadow Fortress.
I recon, Shadow!Tor and Any should give us a good enough plan of the place and territory around so we would plan the storming by the end of 11th month.

Need to do recon over GCs forces before we attack them by the end of the month.

Also need to go to that Yi Tish traitor-general and get his non-interference in us killing off GC - ideally revealing those assassins we know of to him.

A small Adventure Action for PR and profit both - cleaning out the Ymeri's Mansion, Zherys & Viserys for sure, maybe someone else.

A mini-expedition into cities on Plane of Water, seeking diplomatic contacts with locals, new trade routes... And lots and lots of mercenaries against Illithid.
Relath and Viserys for sure, no idea whom else to put there.

We have a bunch of Adventuring Locations in Westeros to hand off to non-Companion minions.
Misfits are already set to go clean out a spooky forest - I recon the rest of the guys we geared would do well dealing with Winter-tainted shit in Westeros, and maybe a place or two Beyond the Wall even.

We should finish "Godhunter" research and make a "Fuck You Timmie"-talisman for Dany (12 Progress, that).
Also finish the Demon-book via a scholarum branch, and have Quburn finish his research.

Finishing Fey Wards (since its supremely unlikely we'll have tem done this month) would be really nice too.

Other two researches of priority...
I'd say, it'd be "Mass PFE for Legions" and "Free any Devil from Hell's leash".

Minor actions that might turn more important include:
1) Dealing with Faceless Men, setting their boundaries within our empire, and getting their lore as per Scholarum rules... While probably trading something in return.
2) Using Discern Location, Greater Scrying, and Greater Teleport to track down and deal with those fffucking Wisps (one way or another).
3) powering up Well of Souls with the remaining 5 Deities (Jazzirian, OGs, MK, Goddess of the Silver Moon, Weeping Lady of Lys)
3.1) we kinda still need to track down and/or meet a manifestation of WLoL's, to ask for help - thankfully, she really doesn't seem the type to tell us to fuck off even on a short notice.
And we kinda tried to meet last month too.

That's all I have off the top of my head. Will have my PC and notes in some hours.

Part MMMLVI: To Bind and Loose
To Bind and Loose

Twenty-Sixth Day of the Tenth Month 293 AC

Hermetia's study speaks almost nothing of magic and little of the power of her office. She does not take audiences here because according to her 'there isn't enough room for all the files and the ego of Lyseni magisters in the same room'. What there is plenty of room for is books of memories and travels practically spilling out of polished goldenwood bookcases besides creaking astrolabes and well worn sextants. This is where she escapes to after a day holding court as much as the place where she deals with the administrative side of the governorship.

"It's not going to smell of brimstone, is it?" Hermetia asks as she rolls up the crimson and gold carpet woven in the Volantene style to represent the tragic parting of Aelon and Naherys, the seminal idyll of the city's literature. "I would not give up the protection of the Erinyes for anything, but the smell does get into everything eventually the more they translocate somewhere."

"No, that is not a concern here. The spirit I mean to speak to is already found, not needing to be summoned," you explain, feeling a little odd to be doing this outside the confines of the Snare, though more from habit than any fear the Asura could escape. She will only be leaving this chamber by one of three paths—death, banishment, or service to you, depending on how cooperative she proves.

The Valyrian Steel of the dagger that serves as the Fiend's prison is warm and oily to the touch as you lay it down on the floor, almost as though it wants to escape your grasp. Thankfully she will not have long to wait, yet as you speak the words of unraveling to free the Fiend within, there is no sign of the triple-faced warrior. You can hear the rustle of silk and the faint clink of bracelets just fine, though.

"I've seen that trick before," you announce as you invoke the power of your silver talisman, just in case she is inclined to do something foolish.

"Did it work the first time?" the head on the left asks as she drops her veil.

"Yes," you reply simply. It would be in poor taste to begin the conversation with a lie when you are about to demand truth from her on pain of flesh-death.

The head you had been speaking to nods and then the one to the right addresses you, whether out of some genuine autonomy of form and spirit or simply as a means to unbalance and disquiet: "Why have you freed me?"

"I have some questions and an offer. Answer the questions honestly and in full and I shall banish you to Hell unharmed. Take the offer and..."

"Remain as your servant," the Asura interjects, glancing around the room with a pointedly raised brow. "If this is the mark of wealth and power you offer I am unimpressed."

Hermetia rolls her eyes at the insult to her taste in decor but keeps her peace while looking on in interest.

"Ordinarily we would be having this conversation in a chamber with all the aesthetic qualities of a hole in the ground, a lead-lined very well warded hole," you point out dryly. "I prefer to be more forthright in my offers. Serve me and you shall have protection, arms and armor forged by my artificers, and wealth and power to match your skill and glory in battle."

"Ask your questions," the three-fold warrior asks, her faces hard as stone.

Amala, Bearer of the Fourth Secret, she names herself after the manner of her kin, though not in full, just as she does not surrender the true names of any other Asura, though she seems perfectly content and almost eager to reveal the names of Baatezu: a pair of Bearded Devils, a handful of Host Devils, and to your not inconsiderable surprise a single Ashmede, the dread judges of Asmodeus' will. Identical smiles sharp as tempered steel touch three pairs of lips. "The one who first obtained the name did not survive judgement being passed upon it, but the judge in turn was careless in the search that followed."

Of her former master's schemes the Upasunda Asura is able to confirm all you had learned from the thoughts turned pages of the Efreeti mage and add a few more details about where the Archfiends gather within the City of Brass and even the time of their next meeting, information your genie allies will be most interested in.

"Well enough," you conclude. "I am content to banish you from this place to hopefully be more discerning in whom you offer your services... unless you would rather make that choice here and now."

For a long moment the Asura is silent. When at last she speaks all heads do so at once. "Fate's Wheel favors you, mortal. I will serve. How shall I do so... for a beginning?"

What do you reply?

  • So you're taking legitimacy from "being a spirit of the land from before the Andals came"? That's the same legitimacy as the mountain clans want, and nobody recognizes them. And your legitimacy is linked to magic, which is the work of the devil!
  • Dominate Person can be detected with a simple Sense Motive (DC 15) check. All other Enchantments can be detected with a Sense Motive (DC 25) check. Enchantment is amazing in combat or for short-term shenanigans, but if you want to rule you won't want to rely on it. People will know who's being influenced and will simply stop obeying or respecting them.
  • You're setting yourself up as the ruler of a single castle. You'll have no force projection, no legitimacy, and limited wealth. How exactly will you set yourself up as a crafter? Crafting requires very expensive weird reagents from all around the world. You're holing yourself up on top of a mountain, scaring traders away, and certainly won't be receiving tax income.

-Actually I plan on acting like a human that had died.

The point is not to get them to accept me, the point is to not have people to think I'm some kind of existence parasite from outside of reality.

I come from your world, I'm one of you, please don't make common cause with the Dothraki against me.

-Dominate Person has stupid mechanics I disagree with but I wouldn't use it that way, I think I only mentioned it once in response to a very basic question from another poster about keeping myself safe "when all the magic tricks run out". That's it.

-I don't plan on staying this way.

First they will fear that I exist but they'll convince themselves they understand.

Either I can be reasoned with, manipulated or destroyed.

Regardless of what they choose they'll be interacting with me, nobody can afford to just abandon the entire region to me and I'd get bored and go elsewhere if they did.

Whether it's politics, war or whatever they choose to try and deal with me I'm primed to win with just straight out bigger numbers.

Even in a purely defensive war I imagine I'd win the Iron Throne because they just can't help themselves.

I realllly don't have the patience to VotD everyone forever, Ill have my subordinates deal with most of that.

I'd be much more like Robert Baratheon than Viserys Targaryen in terms of personal input to ruling but I'll be putting in the effort to improve what strikes my fancy.

A highly eccentric unassailable ruler with tremendous personal power and the occasional spark of genius.

Moderatly important question I missed before, are these Asura individually summoned and bound/negotiated/threatened to work for the Brazen Throne, or is there some larger agreement between the Efreeti and one or more Asura Rana?

[] The Secret of Life and Death: Analyze the lore obtained from Lord Bolton and Qyburn and see to bring the efforts made by the ex-maester to their conclusion, creating undead creatures that neither spread decay, nor need the constant attention of a skilled mage. (Progress 25, Cost 30,000 IM)
[] Weaving Deepest Veils: Research the lore promised by Fey of Orphne court, wards capable of evading even a god's eye... even if not a perfect defense all by themselves. (Progress: 18 Cost: 11,000 IM)
[] The Godhunter: The fortress-ruin that held the Orb of Dragonkind still holds leashed power unlike anything you've ever sensed, but it remains dormant for now. With time, it might be possible to reconstruct the controls of that power, and with proper preparation use it as a weapon to slice away part of a god. (Progress: 16)
[] Iron-bound Tome (Demon-caller's Spellbook): A book with covers wrought of thin sheets of black pitted iron marked with the sign of Abraxas. Though there is no lock binding the pages, the tome refuses to open. Even if with all the strength of your dragon-blooded form it feels like you are trying to move a mountain with your bare hands. (Progress: 8)
[] The Final Contravention: With how far you have come, and how many you broke off from Hells' leash, perhaps you can go around the Pact Primeval in a way none before you had - and utilise the Lawful nature of all Devils to create a Ritual that would be capable of severing their connection to Hells regardless of their exact kind, or strength. (Progress: 30, Cost: 20.000 IM)
[] A Dragon Chained: With Runelore of First Men, and secrets of Shadow Fey Wardings, it may be possible to close on the last hole in the trap you are laying out for Tiamat.
-[] Utilise the corpse of Tiamat's aspect to create a foci, that someone with sufficient skill could use to fight off Tiamat's "Dragon" Divine Domain, holding the power she exerts in check... even if for a short while.
(Progress: 12, Cost: ??)
[] Safety in Numbers: The Hell-forged talismans you recovered from slavers in Gogoss may jsut be the answer to the problem of protecting the soldiers of your Legions, or at least one not excessively expensive-
-[] Research a way for (earlier created) Valyrian Steel Banners be made into capactitors for spell Protection From Evil, covering hundreds of Legion members at a time.
(Progress: 35, Cost: 45000)
[] That Which Stands Forbidden: search through Scrolls of Forbidden Lore recovered in Lyceos (Spellscale, Draconian, and Kobold templates) (Progress: 8)
Does this sound alright, @everyone?
@TalonofAnathrax, @Goldfish, @Crake, @Deliste, @Duesal, @TotallyNotEvil @Artemis1992 ?

We may or may not have the place for some more minor-ish RAs, but these are what I think we should focus on next month.

Additionally, do we, or do we not, intend on nabbing the Thenns in 11th month?

The ideas that sounded few months back, were "we grab them the moment Moonchaser is ready", and if we do, we should also do that one:
[] Elder Arts: An in-depth study of Runelore
-[] Attempt to create advanced wards to protect your places of power (Scholarum, administration, Inquisition, etc…) not unlike those of most ancient castles of Westeros.
--[] Part one, equivalent to a nondetection spell (Progress: 12 Cost: 6000 IM)
-[] Research the Landwards in Thenn's holdings (Progress: 15 Cost: 6000 IM)

Negotiations went all the way to that trio of Asurendras (one of which is now dead), but not as high as a rana.
So the lesser Asura are basically the Asurenda's followers, not individually contracted?

@Crake @egoo I'm not sure if that belongs in the turn-planning or in @Goldfish's crafting-plan, but I think it would be good if Lya learns Battlemage Perception next months and we give a Scroll with the effect to the Cryomancer?

Yeah sure, I'll add that to MAs.

More interaction with that Archmage would only do good, no matter if for feelz or for practicality.

[X] Start with a counter-question, what does she do aside from battle?
-[X] If she works any trade she can likely follow it here, if she has worthwhile things to teach we will consider if that should be spread to our people, if she is a researcher she can help ours or pursue other projects, if she seeks further instruction in magic she can find help and lore too. Ultimatly, as long as she follows the law of the land, she can do what she wants, though starting next month we will allocate some of her time to help were we deem it most useful.
-[X] Aside from these options we will pay her enough to buy a (mid-sized) house and will start equipping her for joining us in combat next time that's needed. She should take the rest of the month to get to know our laws and the local costums, maybe Mercy or Beryl has time to show her the city?
-[X] //Double check what she's going to do with this freedom once she is gone via Divination personally, she is a bit too powerful to trust the Inquisition to handle her and her natural Aura makes her very hard to track or predict for low-CL rituals in the House of Mirrors.

Basic idea is to induce her as a general-purpose minion for the next turn-plan.

I don't want to give her a special assignment until we know more about her skills.
@DragonParadox
Is that okay?
I can't really plan much with as little as we know, a Charsheet and some personal preferences in the next update would be really helpful there.

Edit: Her Aura will be a serious problem if it turns out we can't fully trust her. That means we need companion-grade spells on her for the start, the House of Mirrors doesn't have the power to pierce the Elusive Aura without a nat. 20.

Asura are pretty hedonistic when not engaged in their personal obsessions, so if you guys tell her to wait until next month she will probably see about indulging that side of her nature (food, drink, pleasant company). A few days are not going to make much of a difference to her.

That's perfectly fine for me, as long as she gives us the information we need to put her to good use now.
Then we can give her something to do in the next turnplan and for all I care she can party the entirety of the non-allocated days away.

I'm assuming she gets a reasonable pay for her future work, since that was part of Duesal's offer, but I'm not sure what is appropriate for her. Propably below the level of expenses that are relevant to our current finances.

Those all look good to me, though the Demon-caller's spell book might be quite superfluous. It's not one I would focus on, but something to research when we have someone with nothing important to do, or not enough time for a major project.

Wait a moment, are you sure you are not mixing up Asura with Rakshasa here?

The Pathfinder site says the are often ascetic and spend a lot of time on meditation and reflection.

Oni and Rakshasa are the generally hedonistic ones and maybe in their special way Kytons too. For an Asura that would be a rather unusual trait.

Hmm... fair enough. She could spend those days in contemplation and meditation.

Us having her true name is mandatory. We do not allow traitors.
Of course. When I said "more or less the deal we offered Mereth" I meant it. Part of that deal was getting her true name for the event that she ever betrays us. Or if she's banished and we need to summon her again.

Just a few updates ago, it was pointed out that not thinking of what their familiar would do with their body was a sign of pride.
Now, Viserys is in fact very prideful. Still, he's rather practical when he has to be : @DragonParadox, what would Varys do if she got her claws on Viserys' soulless body?
I'm betting that she'd try to take it back to Lya somehow, for safekeeping. And of course so that the team's mighty spellcasters could try to bring Viserys' soul back somehow.

Do we carry an item of Teleport or Plane Shift that a nonspellcaster could use? I do remember buying some...

And on another note, now that I've seen what people have been putting forward, here's my response to my own challenge :
Factotum 1 / Dragon Shaman 1 / Dragonfire Adept 1 / Monk 1 / Swordsage 1 / Chameleon 5 - insertion in ASWAH, not ASOIAF. In ASOIAF I'd be a demigod, but I'd also feel responsible for fixing a whole lot of awful shit about the setting. In ASWAH I can rely on our boy Viserys to end slavery and eventually set up a decent afterlife in case I get killed. 10/10, would swear fealty to again.

I'll appear in Qarth. It's a big city, it's miles away from the canon plot, and - wait no, WTF was I saying there!?! That's way too close to Asshai, and the warlocks are probably subtle enough to find a Mind Blanked person inside their city.

I'll appear in White Harbor. The place is reasonably safe (apart from a tiny problem with Devils, but if I fail to mop it up Viserys will handle it), it's a reasonably sized town and a trading port (inns, decent place to live all around) and it's within Teleporting range of most of the North - and I've always liked hiking in colder areas.
I'm not touching the plot with a 10ft-pole until Viserys & Co are at least level 10. Then I'll maybe go say hello, lend a hand, grab some of those sweet "looted by Viserys" benefits and all that.

If I had to do this build in ASOIaF, then I'd root for Daenerys and try to get her to stabilize Essos and do a better job of stamping out slavery.

Meanwhile Chameleon allows access to Mind Blank through Extra Spell and Heighten bullshit, which will be very useful to hide for a while. Because yes, I do intend to hide from the plot for as long as I can. Any levelling that happens will be nice, but certainly won't be a key objective. Although in just two levels I get double aptitude, effectively doubling my spellcasting ability and turning me into a discount Theurge...

Weirdly, I found myself making a PC with high Survival, Scent and Track. Not something I would usually do, but why not? I have the spells to make exploring the setting possible in relative comfort, so taking the skills for it could be nice too!
And yes, I'm multiclassing like crazy. I have zero shame. High saves please!

Those all look good to me, though the Demon-caller's spell book might be quite superfluous. It's not one I would focus on, but something to research when we have someone with nothing important to do, or not enough time for a major project.

True, but for the sake of common sense, I think we can all agree that without an actual Researcher on the task, Scholarum branches should only be able to do minor tasks by themselves - about ~7 Progress.

So, having started this one in 10th month, I think it would just make sense to finish it now, with the same branch that started it even (Volantis).

I mean, it needs only 2 points to be done, iirc.

  1. You guys do indeed have items of planshift and teleport that can be used by anyone.
  2. In that situation Varys would try to get the body back to Dany first and foremost (draconic prejudice in her favor).

@DragonParadox, can we get the XP for the Efreeti Raid?
Of her former master's schemes the upasunda is able to confirm all you had learned from the thoughts turned pages of the Efreeti mage and add a few more details about where the arch-fiends gather within the City of Brass and even the time of their next meeting, information your genie allies will be most interested in.
Wait. A gathering of Archfiends in the City of Brass? I am interested and so, so terrified. @DragonParadox, does Amala the Upasunda know how many and what kind? Does she know their names? Not for summoning, obviously, but you don't reach CR 20 and stay a nobody.
