Wisdom from the Sands
Twenty-Seventh Day of the Eighth Month 293 AC
Prince Doran Nymeros Martell is not surprised by his brother's exploits. You suspect it has been many years since that has been the case, and just as many since Oberyn's other exploits have raised more than a weary sigh. The intention to land him was also more or less expected, for you had made no secret of the purpose of the tourney... then you come to the crux of your purpose here.
"You want to legitimize
all of them?" asked the Prince of Dorne. "That is...
unprecedented."
"That is a very polite way to say 'foolish,' Highness," you reply with a smile to show you did not intend the words to sting. "With everything else I aim to do, with everything else that
needs doing, I do not think the number of bastards I have legitimized will be of much note."
"You realize he isn't going to
stop, especially now that he has so very many interesting options..." he trails off, motioning vaguely with one hand to show the vastness of existence, though granted in a context that few would think to use.
You laugh from behind a cup of Dornish Red. "You know as well as I how skilled your brother can be not only in war but intrigue and, even in his own way, diplomacy. Signatures upon writs of legitimization are a small price to pay for such worth. After all, many lords would ask me to sign instead letters of credit or orders of execution."
"Fair point," the Prince of Dorne replies. "House Sandviper... It has the virtue of being quite descriptive, I will grant. Where are his lands to be?" At your explanation he nods: "Rhoynar lands, but not those holding Ny Sar, likely wise given the tendency of history to leap from its dusty tomb and try to strangle one these days."
"Being fair, Highness, we are doing a rather thorough job robbing that tomb first, are we not?" Not a jest you would have even imagined making to him a year ago, but now he only smiles.
You go on to speak of the Yronwood matter, the devils' strategy to drive a wedge between House Martell and some of their strongest bannermen, as well as the fact that Archibald Yronwood is currently in Sorcerer's Deep alongside many, many other 'mystery knights' who are scarce trying to hide.
At Doran's request you expand upon the list while he ponders the matter of House Yronwood. When you reach Horas Redwyne he outright chuckles. "That is one fleet off the board without even having to burn it... good. I have been working to build up a navy since you sent those first ships over years ago, but I did not much relish their first engagement being against one of the premier naval powers in the Seven Kingdoms."
With a start you realize you had not considered Dorne's fleet in any of your calculations, secure in the knowledge that your own ships could make the crossing, that you could sweep the royal fleet aside from the air. Not allowing any of this to show on your face, you thank Doran for his forethought, and while you are pondering maritime matters you speak of your expedition to Yi Ti, asking him if he would wish to invest in the venture for the treasure fleet while promising returns far in excess of any that has ever sailed from Westeros.
"I had not considered it..." his words trail off. "My immediately available funds are not as plentiful as they once were, but it would be folly to ignore the chance, though I am afraid I can already hear my seneschal weeping bitter tears..."
On such short notice Doran cannot pledge trade goods, but he
can offer gold, either to buy goods from the Opaline Vault in the few days that remain until the expedition departs or simply to send it with the ships to buy Yi Tish goods.
200,000 Gold added to the Yi Tish Expedition Funds
When the documents have been exchanged and the gold changed hands the prince finally decides upon the path he is to take with House Yronwood, conciliatory,
commiserating even, over the great and terrible danger they had been passed over, the peril House Martell protected them from. He plans to discretely share many of benefits of magic with Lord Anders Yronwood, particularly the ones that make it very clear how strong House Martell's position is. "I would appreciate it if Archibald arrives home with similar tales, Your Grace, speaking of the great power of mages of which House Martell has many, House Targaryen even more, and the Yronwoods
none at all."
"Easily done, Highness," you reply. "One would have to be rather dense not to notice that truth even without help, but I will see to it that he is directed to such a conclusion."
Next you explain of the Lads, the brewing rebellion in the Riverlands soon to be moving in smaller groups but much better armed and supplied.
"Do be careful about the Riverlanders," Doran counsels. "Robert Baratheon is planning to pass through there on his way North soon. It would be most inconvenient were he to trip and fall on say a Darry blade before the proper time."
Truth be told you do not plan to give the Usurper the chance to set foot in the Riverlands, but you can hardly admit how you plan to do
that. Still, talk of rebellion naturally lends itself to winning the hearts of the smallfolk. You ask Doran if he would rather Dorne were spared the storm of parchment that is to descend upon Westeros, though as you had anticipated he waves off the offer. "I shall just have to make sure no lords encourage the smallfolk too much in keeping and enshrining such objects." After a moment he adds: "If you need any suggestions for caricatures I was told I had some skill at drawing in my youth..."
For just a moment the gleam in his eyes reminds you of his younger brother.

OOC: There is no need to talk to Yronwood urgently, he is sticking around at least until the end of the festival.
