One thing to note about Balerion, that you can raise him at all means he did not die, as most suppose, of old age, he certainly did not die in battle either so that leaves sickness or foul play and you can all guess which one Viserys is betting on.

@Duesal, I personally think it's mostly about compatible characters when taming dragons. Obara and Cannibal just sound like two ornery bastards that would get along.
However, that hope has been dashed.
On the plus side though, we can get Balerion.
And Stannis can be a dragonrider. Maybe he would like to try his luck with Cannibal? They share the fratricidal urges at least.

Makes sense, it was described that despite being lesser feral dragons that Valyrian dragons still got bigger as they aged like normal dragons. The fact he stopped growing the year before he died and was described as hard to wake up implies he was being poisoned or something over a long period of time before he finally passed.
