  • [X] Talking to Knight Mk. 3
-[X] Assure Ser Karyl that we have not forgotten that the Grafton's were the sole house in all the Vale to remain true to the Targaryens, and shall be suitably rewarded for their loyalty. In the meantime, we're asking them to prepare for the Reconquest once we've finished wrapping up Essos, working with the Royces to ensure the loyalty of as many houses in the Vale as they can. Disparage the Faith as having climbed into bed with the Lannisters, all too eager to decry our 'evil ways' and yet awfully silent about the Golden Shields all the sudden.
--[X] Speaking of which, does he have any idea why Vardis Sunderland and Ser Halys Belmore are here? It isn't difficult to figure out what the Sistermen are up to but Belmore is a bit of a surprise.
-[X] Invite Ser Erren Florent for a private royal audience in order to figure out if he's aware of his uncle's diabolic dealings, and why he's here in general. The Florents are no minor house, and being able to quietly flip them to our cause would be yet another step in firmly securing the Reach south of the Mander.
-[X] The Peake's have greatly declined in influence and their current lord is married to a Lannister, if barely. Still, a noble house is a noble house. Send an envoy to discover if the 'Quarreler' speaks for his family or is here over personal ambition.
-[X] Have an agent subtly contact Ser Wendel Manderly to find out if he wants to speak to us, is here for some specific purpose, or is just participating in the joust and observing the proceedings.

Teana won't be competing. It would be completely unfair. If that was the goal, we could have just entered Lya in the competition and called it a day.

Teana is going to be a judge instead.
So are people going to start believing that the tournament is what the peak of the world is? Cause that would suck personally I mean I just don't like the idea. I find the idea of showing off whats really possible to be fun.

... there's a city around that is literally the product of magic.
Maybe we could have a fight that shows off all the champions vs us or some companions. That would be fun right?
Expensive. These true resurrections aren't cheap.

That completely defeats the purpose of the tournaments, dude. We're trying to attract new talent to our realm so that we can impress them then subvert them to our cause. That's what all the advertising and incredible prizes are for.

I get that but does that really stop us from gathering the talent then completely curbstomping them at the end as a show of power?

Also, we still try to make the participants feel kind of important. In a sense 'what you can achieve', not a 'you don't matter at all'.

I think awakening the Dawn Tree will be an all hands on deck thing.
((and it'd be the perfect opportunity for our enemies striking at us xD ))

Though, we're not going to make a spectacle about the tree sanctification right?
*demonic death screams heard around the island*

But what I'm trying to say is, the Dawn Tree is going to speak for itself I suppose.

I expect anyone sensitive to magic, and perhaps also 'mundanes', will get some impression from that nexus of power.

Seriously does no one want to show off a force of power of us and/or our companions at least once? Frame it in a way of what can be achieved and you have not yet reached what your possible of kind of stuff?

Part MMDCLXXXVI: A Glint of Devilry
A Glint of Devilry

Twenty-Sixth Day of the Eighth Month 293 AC

You find Ser Karyl to be fine company if not the most politically astute with regards to Vale politics, though at least he is aware of it. His father gave him permission to travel to Sorcerer's Deep, and he saw his chance at glory and mayhap even land. The thought of new alliances in the Vale obviously aimed against House Arryn makes him uneasy, not out of any deep-seated loyalty to House Arryn but because 'it just isn't done'. Even Aegon had left the Arryns, the Lannisters, and the Starks in their place, and that is what he had been expecting from you. The notion that the Faith itself is playing political games with the Lannisters is one the young Grafton knight had not even considered until you mentioned it... upon which he becomes incensed at the notion.

"The Faith Militant has been outlawed for centuries. We can't just have it sneak in through the backdoor like a cur begging for scraps. They might stir up the smallfolk, and then the poor blighters would just get trampled into the ground, and the ones that don't will starve because they were too busy pretending scythes are weapons to use them for what they are intended..."

All things told you are thankful for the prudence of not mentioning the Corbray plot or anything about devils, he likely would have shouted it from the rafters. Still, the young Grafton knight did speak to both Vardis Sunderland, whom he judges as being here mostly on his own accord, being a fifth son with few prospects indeed, and Ser Halys Belmore, whom he calls 'unreasonably secretive' for not having returned his greeting at first due to wanting to preserve his identity.

"He seemed to be going on a lot about snakes and blood drinking trees for someone who was fine taking your gold should he win the joust." Ser Karyl's face darkens again. "You don't think he could be involved in this nonsense with the mad septons do you?"

"No, that seems unlikely," you reply. Privately you would give good odds on the Belmore knight at least being a sympathizer, but telling Ser Karyl that would only lead to a fight. You mark the news to pass on to the Inquisition.

If nothing else by the time your conversation is done he is quite committed to the notion of House Grafton forming an alliance in the Vale to help keep down the influence of the Faith, having come around to the notion that Jon Arryn is simply not able to face this threat. Ser Karyl may not be the sharpest mind around, but he does take his vows of knighthood seriously whether to highborn or low. That news you shall pass to Waymar, for unless you are much mistaken you have found him a candidate for the Griffin knights.

Ser Erren Florent could not have been more different from the earnest Valeman who had proceeded him in your study. Though he arrives escorted he still casts a wary eye around like a man marching into the bowels of some dungeon. Is it simply worry over his family's part in the war... or does a deeper guilt hang upon him? you wonder.

"Be welcome into my home, Ser," you say rising to greet him, and gazing upon him with more than mortal eyes. At first you see no magic upon him, but then you notice a ripple out of place... the light falls strangely upon his golden cloak fastening as though it were two things at once, and only one of them were turned towards you.

As you look closer you feel a whisper of compulsion slip across the surface of your mind like oil upon glass: It is nothing, that soft sigh of power seems to whisper. To you it might as well have been a shout proclaiming itself.

Dedicating only a small part of your attention to setting Ser Erren at ease, you look deeper into the strange veiled sorcery. Two clasps in one place, one common as gold can be and the other enchanted with powers of divination... no, to serve as a focus for divination. Ser Erren is being watched from afar, and not you suspect by kindly eyes. Still, the question lingers... does he know?

What do you do?

[] Try to read the knight's mind to figure out how deep in the plot he is

[] Dispel the cloak clasp causing the subtle but unstable enchantment to unravel and reveal the divination focus in full

OOC: The clasp focus was designed to fool even True Seeing, requiring a DC 50 Spellcraft check to see. Fortunately for you guys Viserys bonus on that skill is +39 and he made the roll.

You know, that moment we ward the entire island our capital rests on in a huge ass ritual pouring thousands of HD of fiends and other such ilk down the throat of our Old Gods pals.

Pretty sure people think Viserys would power a giant monster or hell gate like all our enemies seem to love doing if we were going to hold one long-ass ritual that involved blood sacrifice. :V

Kind of, yes, I'd like, but: it would be like a physics professor going to elementary school and showing off. The school children would see more pretty lights, and the teacher's would get that nice 'good enough for second class' feeling.

I just dont want people getting arrogant and/or complacent thinking they are the end all be all.

Ah...that feeling you get when you realize the +10 Competence bonus to Spellcraft you added to Viserys' ring this month made itself useful so soon...

[X] Dispel the cloak clasp causing the subtle but unstable enchantment to unravel and reveal the divination focus in full
-[X] After Dispelling the focus, ask "Would you care to explain why you brought such a potent and well hidden enchantment meant to serve as a target for magical Divination into the heart of my realm, Ser Florent?"
