Selective up to a point.

Also starting a mage fight in the middle of a famous landmark in a city we don't rule is one thing, but throwing around the closest thing to tactical nukes (8th level spells) is another thing entirely.
I'd rather save our nuclear option for when there's legitimately no other choice. The Sealord will not be happy with us annihilating a chunk of his city.
We need increasingly high concentration checks to prevent the spell from hitting friendlies. Given that this is a public plaza, we would kill a ton of bystanders.

Bah, I'm not built for this "subtlety" stuff. Give me an open battlefield and a target rich environment any day.

Fine fine, no easy solution to this then.

Almost makes me want to invent the gun just so we can shoot the bastards at times like this.

Always good to see unreasonably powerful enemies that make all the time and spells spent worthless in the face of the all powerful author handwave.

To be fair this isn't a handwave, this is fighting someone not only arrogant enough to try and play Tiamat and Mammon for fools, but paranoid enough to live for presumably months to years doing it.

If we had reduced him to a vegetable via the curse and then he started pulling this shit out of his ass it'd be a different story, but as it is all we could do was light up his general location just so we could find the bastard.

This isn't some random mook, this is a boss fight with all the threat that entails. Unfortunately it's one of those annoying bossfights where your ultimate attack won't work and you have to actually work to kill the fucker.

Wow this is great! Vary's really lived up to my expectations DP.

This is exciting, feels like it's been so long since we've been in a situation like this.

This is the high level full-caster equivalent of a slap fight because every spell used cancels out what the other person is trying to do.

I don't think this is true. Even if it was, I think it was becoming a bit boring just roflstomping the threats that pop up.

Ultimately, if we can get as powerful as we are, why can't others?

Hmm so what does Varys have spell immunity against? I don't think it protects against shape changing abilities since it triggered against our Smoky Confinement.

Why does this feel like a handwave?

Honest question. I though I had foreshadowed Varys being dangerous, but I would like to know how that failed for you.
It's a little bit of a dissasociation, I believe.

The Varys you hinted at was perfectly build up as this kind of boss, at least since we made the connection between him and our unknown Devil-Caller.

But people still have this picture of Varys from canon in mind, who is for all his skills not physically threatening at all.

It is "The warded creature is immune to the effects of one specified spell for every four levels you have."

So I guess baleful polymorph as well, at the very least. He seems to tune his immunities against spells Viserys is known to use, and baleful polymorph was a signature spell for a long time now.

I'll be honest, if anyone should have knowledge of Viserys' favorite sacrifice capture spells and antimagic build, it's gonna be Varys. Additionally he was spymaster for Robert "who the fuck wants to count coppers?" Baratheon and Jon "trade is beneath a noble's dignity," Arryn. So he's also in a prime position to WBL-mance on a scale we're just starting to approach. What, it's not like grift and embezzlement started with Baelish.

I think I'll do an interlude next, What do you guys want to see?

FESTIVAL FESTIVAL FESTIVAL. I'll be honest, finally doing intrigue in KL and taking down Varys is great, but I'm hoping most of the most and updates will be on essentially the founding of the Imperium and Party Time.
