[X] The Black Water Canal

[X] Tzar Boris Bokha

Major historical events that we had a direct hand in. Very interested in these.

[X] Eonir Tourism

Sounds like a fun time, and fits very well with Xeno-Affinity.

[X] Eike

Eike.

Eike has learned:
Enchantment (1/2)
Materials: Eike is able to quickly and precisely evaluate how conductive a material is to various forms of magical energy, and how to compensate for or take advantage of that conductivity. +1 Learning, Advanced will give +1 Magic
Windherder (1/4)

I think we should attempt another windherding enchantment next turn—Eike's Materials skill will probably be very useful for it, and it'll round off her enchantment education.

Also windherding has the potential to be very interesting.

Two actual questions for @Boney:
Shouldn't this be 2/4? I thought she got one on a prior action, and there was one roll for it here.

Could you conform for the future, because I'm sure it would come up: The +1 Magic applies to Eike because she has a talent for it (and maybe also because she's not that powerful yet). If Mathilde reached Advanced Materials, it would just be a learning bonus.

And here general thoughts
That, you suppose, is one of the benefits to being an ancient terror - instead of working around others, you get to be the one that other people have to work around.
Lifegoals. Niedzwenka, Cython and Kragg are great role models.
"It struck me that trying to do such rote and predictable work with any of our crafts was misplaced effort," he says. "The Engineers Guild of Karak Hirn put this together for me, a hand-cranked proof of concept for a mechanism that would be linked into Wind-sensitive valves. It would take input from the array of eight valves here," he points to eight small steel drums, and pushes three of them downwards. "Using mechanisms adapted from a stepped reckoner, it opens between two and eight valves when the input from enough of them is above some arbitrary threshold." He turns a wheel, and with a rattle of gears and a sudden click, three rods push downwards, and then retract back up again as the machine resets itself. "It seems to me that the most appropriate design would be based on a mainspring that would need rewinding once a month, but it could also work with vanes or a millrace or similar."
I think it's really interesting that this comes up here, because it's quite similar to the auditory Seviroscope. I wonder if Kragg's new toy inspired him.
I guess being part of the Project has been pretty broadening for Thorek, because canon-Thorek is absolutely the sort of Dwarf to do it through his art regardless of how effectively Engineering would be at it.
Yeah, canon-Thorek's thing is doing anything possible with runes and not any of that new-fangled engineering stuff. But I guess there's a few factors to it. One, everybody likes to win, and K8Ps was the greatest win in living dwarven history. Two, he's just two busy, what with the rivalry with Kragg, making use of new opportunities now accessible for his runecraft, doing rune politics, a then doing rune politics very energetically. Three, prior cases of thaumoengineering easing him in. Like, way back the rune charger was mostly runes, but there was definitly an engineering component to it. And then the seviroscope was mostly engineering, but definitely highly relevant to runecraft. Bok, the Sword of Gazul, and the Waystone project have also all demonstrated the power of bringing different paradigms together. Because everybody likes to win.
That's actually not quite true about the mainspring - a while back some very clever wizards (M.Gold and M.Grey) put out a very comprehensive analysis of the inner workings of a Skaven Ratling gun, and part of that involves exploiting natural mechanics of Dhar interacting with itself to rewind a mainspring used to start up a process.

Just need to be sure we never, ever, tell anyone we're copying a Skaven idea/process, but apart from that I'm sure nothing could go wrong...
I genuinely think this is a good idea. Whether it can actually be implemented remains to be seen, but stealing ideas from the rats is an ongoing project for the Colleges. And honestly, I can see the dwarfs taking some satisfaction from stealing their knowledge for once (since not right thinking dwarf would work in this field anyway).
Ah, that certainly makes sense. From the perspective of a practicing Archmage, a Lord Magister is probably a savant toddler with sublime understanding of their Wind and next to no skill for actually explaining their understanding to anyone else than other savants.
Honestly, they often can't even understand each other.
Now I want to dedicate an action to helping them, not because I care about it getting done faster but because I want more scenes of Mathilde tormenting House Fanpatar with her nonsensical human wizardry.
I haven't decided for sure yet, but probably.
If it's an EIC action, then I 100% want this.

I really do like how humans have turned out quite capable of contributing during the project. I doubt the Archmages see the human wizards as equals (with some justification, except maybe where Baba is concerned), but the elven wizards might reluctantly come around to seeing them as peers. Deranged peers, but still.
to do one weird trick for infinite hand meat or something
Now that you've said it, I want infinite hand meat. I don't know what I want it for, I just desire it.
My dream to open the absolute worst restaurant in K8P in flames.
Oh, I guess I want it for this.

You might be thinking of Waaaghbane.

Yes. Eike's form of Windsight would let her use that to take advantage of the material properties of the world around her on the fly. Even if Mathilde acquires that same level of theoretical knowledge, it won't be wired into her Windsight in the same way.

Hmm, sounds like Eike might well be able to turn her own staff for her Journeying, which would be a lot more sightly than Mathilde doing so(and no doubt the examiners would be more strict for someone with a potent handmedown). Even if its not dipping into Mathilde's coffers, her special awareness just works better at maximizing materials.

Thoughts on the social options. I'll actually vote later.

Laurelorn
[ ] Eike
Have a discussion about faith, the Gods, and the role they play in one's life.
Neat, but doesn't feel all that pressing, and I'm not hyped for it, except Eike being cute.
[ ] Swordplay
Test your newly-completed swordfighting style against the swordsmen of Tor Lithanel.
Also neat, and I do want to see this, but the social vote is hard fought enough that I don't think it'll the list.

Karak Eight Peaks
[ ] Okri
You've met Loremaster Okri of Karak Eight Peaks once before. Pay him a visit and see how his great ambitions for heavily-armed Ironbreakers delivered by Gyrocarriage are going.
I really would like to get to know him. It's been on the To-Do List for a while, and it'd be nice to hang around Eight-Peaks for a bit.

Foreign Relations
[ ] Middenland
See how the Ulricans are going with their new Eonir coreligionists.
Interesting, and potentially useful. Something to consider.
[ ] Nordland
See what's going on with the Ulrican schismatics that Nordland is backing.
As above. Get a feel for Nordlands perspective, which we're missing, so I give this a slightly higher priority.
[ ] Wissenland
Though the Elector Count is his usual self, some of their actions recently have hinted at the hand of someone a great deal defter. Investigate who took the job of his Spymaster after you turned it down.
Could be neat, and maybe an old friend (Watch guy!), but it doesn't feel too important.
[X] The Black Water Canal
Attend the grand opening of the Black Water Canal as it finally bridges the waterways of the northern and southern halves of the continent.
Definitely yes. We've been waiting for this so long, I will not miss it. Also a chance to meet Whilhelmina again, and maybe see how she and Eike are getting on. I will vote for this.
[ ] Druchii Diplomats
Check in on these unexpected visitors to Tor Lithanel.
Could certainly be interesting, but I also just don't want to deal with Druchii. On that basis, I'd vote for just about anything else.
[ ] Eonir Tourism
Despite language and cultural barriers, some of the Eonir have begun venturing out into the wider Empire. Check how this is going, and get a glimpse of the Empire you were born in from the point of view of those to whom it is alien.
I actually really like this. It sounds super interesting, and I love Boney worldbuilding. A useful note is that everyone heading out will be forestborn. Probably will vote for this.

Friends Abroad
[X] Tzar Boris Bokha
Attend the coronation of the new Tzar of Kislev.
Hell yes. You don't just help put someone in power by assassinating his father and then not turn up at the coronation. Also, I wanna see how he's doing. And, I do love other people suffering from Mathilde's success.

Following Up
[ ] Amber College
Check in on the salamanders.
Eh, don't really care. Done it. Maybe there's something new now, but whatever.
[ ] Skull River Ambush
Look into the investigation of the mining of the Skull River, and any consequences of it.
I'm nosy, so this appeals. Though we did hear about the Marienberg purges, so it's not so critical.
[ ] Kalishiniviks
Observe the fate of the Kalishiniviks, who have been made a scapegoat for the death of the Tzar.
Also very interesting. I do want to see this. Probably works well with the coronation, more time seeing Boris suffer from success is nice. And I do want to see how well our first political assassination worked out.

So, Coronation and Canal are locked in for me. For the remaining three, I think these are my top contenders (in no particular order):
[ ] Skull River Ambush
[ ] Eonir Tourism
[ ] Okri
[ ] Kalishiniviks

With the second cateogry of "also interesting, but not so much"
[ ] Middenland
[ ] Nordland
[ ] Wissenland
[ ] Swordplay
I'm noticing a pattern with Egrimm ever since he got promoted—he gets interested in a project, but tapers off about half way through and stops contributing.

He didn't trek through the wilderness to find a nexus, he obtained the materials for the servioscope but Mathilde and Eike were the ones who assembled it, and he didn't actually write his own paper, but instead left it to Mathilde to do.

I don't begrudge him this—he's a lord magister afterall, and doesn't actually have to listen to our orders. But it is a thing I'm noticing, and it might be worth keeping in mind for the future.
I wonder if such a tendency was a reason he didn't get promoted (as much as I don't want to admit it, there is the possibility of Alric having good reasons for things), or it's a result of subconsciously ingrained habit/rebellion (he always got pushed to things by Alric, and being able not to finish stuff is freeing, even if he doesn't realise it).

But hey, if he really is unable to ever bring a project to conclusion, we'll be forever safe from his shocking yet inevitable betrayal.

Egrimm: I have betrayed you! All for the sake of my own power!
Mathilde: Curse this sudden and unexpected betrayal! What is your plan with turning back on everything you know and love Egrimm!
Egrimm:...okay, so i didn't plan this far ahead.

his shocking yet inevitable betrayal.
I know that OOC this persistent meme was brought on by his canonical fate, but I like to think that whatever suspicion and fretting might bleed into Mathilde's subconscious from the thread comes from the Lord of Change having managed to dig its hooks uncomfortably deep. Sure, the only right thing is to ignore everything a daemon says, but what if?

[X] Middenland

[X] The Black Water Canal
[X] Druchii Diplomats
[X] Tzar Boris Bokha
[X] Amber College

Wissenland and Okri I'm uninterested in. Looking in detail at the results of Boris' political purges I am anti-interested in.
I like the idea of the Eike action, but I think its substance can probably be folded into a paragraph or two of a main-turn Piety action, like bringing her into studying the Moon artefact.
Swording practice sounds okay, but we've already recently had sections written on her practicing by herself, with Eike, and with the Undumgi. I think I'm sworded out for the moment. The Undumgi themselves were able to adapt to the quirks of the style relatively quickly. I imagine practising with the elves will be "like that, but faster".

Though really, maybe we should learn arcane Khazalid and/or Anoqeyån before Eike graduates so we can pass that on to her.

In the eyes of dwarves, Eike will remain Mathilde's apprentice even after she graduates. It's not a status that can be lost, so while any Arcane Khazalid (if it exists) that Mathilde learns would be restricted to "your apprentice", it'll always be allowed for Eike. Though I suppose it's easier to teach her something while we have control over her curriculum.

One of the possibilities is 'tears a hole all the way through to the Warp' so Mathilde limited her experimentation.

Considering expanding the mouth of the realm involves sticking her soul into the gap to use as a bandsaw, probably for the best.

So I was wondering, considering EIke seens to have developed a material skill beyond just a trait, is there anything stoping us from learning it ourselves ?

I'd expect with enough study she might be able to, but that it would be a Learning improvement and not a Magic +1. Like, there are a lot of paths to the peak but once you're there exploring the lower levels of stuff doesn't really do much for you any more.

It's fascinating to me that even something as technical as creating a spell seems to be so greatly affected by the immersion in their wind collegiate wizards have.

Creating a spell is as much a mystical/spiritual endeavour as a technical one. It's why codifying them is so hard.
