I like it. Pays homage to the Dusk Rider this spell is based on and contains a pun but not in a groan-inducing sort of way. I prefer 'Nightbringer', I feel like that fits the tenor of Dusk-Rider and Shadow-steed better, but that's quibbling, both are fine.

(Nightbringer is entirely distinct from Knightbringer, which is bad and wrong and illegal. It's like calling RoW 'Right of Way' - you can't make the official name the pun, that's backwards)

I can think its actually in character for Mathilde to want to name stuff after herself. this is from my point of view but Mathilde seems to have a need to be remembered, to leave a legacy that future people will go she made/did that.

the problem is that as a shadow wizard being remembered is sort of against the point (outside of actions causing fear), so she rebels in her own way by leaving her name everywhere she can.

@Boney thank you for the endlessly entertaining updates. I found this one very entertaining. Couldn't help but chuckle at Mathilde's Orc impression and her urge to Wizardsplain when Hubert wasn't specific enough in regards to her experimentation.

I always love the worldbuilding you put into every facet of the story when we interact with the magic of the setting. It's so fascinating and entertaining that I continue to desire to push further with our experiments. Who knew Daemonology would be so fun?

I jest. I'm into Daemonology only insofar as it doesn't involve the Chaos Gods. I know we probably aren't going to end up working with more Apparitions, even if some might be willing to work with Handmaidens. We already got what we wanted out of Apparitions, and it'll take a lot of convincing to push the boundaries further when we have so many other things to do.

Also worth keeping in mind that they are users, not creators. Effects, not causes.
Just because they utilise aspects of the Aethyr doesn't mean they have a monopoly on those aspects.

Well, the Whispering Darkness might be a shortcut to getting that Battlemagic Cloud of Death spell some of us have been theorising about, but yeah, I don't see us picking up another one soon, if only because we have a lot of other stuff we want to do first.

There's also a small part of me, not that big, that's somewhat worried about what our higherups might think if we keep finagling with Apparitions. Sure they're not exactly Daemons, but there's a reason the Gold Order were worried about people finding out what they're doing. Considering how many worrying things Mathilde has worked on, and her recent entangling with a Lord of Change, there is a part of me that worries if we do a lot of work on Apparitions, Algard might keep an even closer eye on us.

It's still not a huge concern for me, but it is a thought.

The thing is... what is he going to keep an eye on us with? We live in a dwarf Karak at the edge of the known world and in the hidden forest of elves barely coming out of isolationism, in addition to all that issues that come with spying on a Lady Magister. At Mathilde's level of power and influence you either extend full trust or you kill her. There is no way to control or effectively spy on her.

That is a fair thing to be worried about, especially with the lengths we've gone to to hide our extensive knowledge of Dhar and Necromancy. The Demonology thing is another thing to be cautious about, especially since we plan on making it public.

However, we do have 20 years of loyal and exemplary service to the Empire and their allies in our back pocket, and it'll take a lot of work to erode that trust we've earned. Still, no point squandering that trust now whilst we're in the middle of a diplomatically tricky project that's built mostly upon our reputation and not much else, so it's probably better overall to be cautious rather than incautious when dealing with Dark-adjacent magics.

Eye doesn't mean constant surveillance. It just means extra paranoia when he sees all the stuff we've cooked up. It's not a serious concern of mine, but I will say that "full trust" does not exist in the Grey Order. If we used the Coin to trick someone from the Grey Order into being one hundred percent certain that we've said is the truth, that in itself would cause an immovable object to collide into an unstoppable force. That gives me the impression that full trust isn't a thing.
