Hrm, on further thonks, yeah, I think it was a scouting party leaving, they weren't fucked up enough to be coming home.

[X] The left-hand passage, where the troll-men came from

Well, that went fine.

[X] The right-hand passage, where the troll-men were going

If they're coming from somewhere and headed home, that place is done, plus I agree that's unlikely. On the other hand, if they're going to somewhere, that place might need help (this might not have been the only group, after all). That likely delays getting to the main nest, but we're not on a time limit here (or not a very strict one, anyway).

Man, imagine if a Norseman dropped trollmen in Christian lands. Or, well, anywhere that wasn't Norse lands. They'd wreck absolute havoc... since literally every Norseman is a psuedo-cultivator of some kind, trollmen are a manageable threat, but imagine tossing them into lands with mortals? They're around the same strength as mortals, yet breed WAY faster, so they'd be a proper menace. I imagine that the cultivators of other lands would be able to stop a trollmen infestation fairly easily, but it feels like there'd be a heavy toll in mortal lives.

They're still weaker than mortal soldiers. Anyone with weapons, armor, and training can take at least two or three, and there's evidence Christians may be able to hit 2d4 on combat rolls which is better than the Troll-Men as well. Still awful anywhere without cultivators to handle them, though.

Holy...

What did Gabriel do?

Charge into the middle of them and not bother dodging.

@Imperial Fister, could I use my reward dice to get a hint on one of the things we're missing for ascension?
Sorry, I was in the middle of answering this when I got distracted.

*ahem*

If one wishes to have a healthy garden, they must keep it clear of pests and disease.

I feel like that is worth 1 Reward Dice.

0~0~0

Anyways, I'm going to go ahead and call the vote in 45 minutes as I would like to do another update today.

Uh... yeah, I have no idea what this could possibly mean. Did we bring over pests and diseases when we brought the plantlife into our Soulscape? Or is this more of a metaphorical thing...? Do we need to ensure the healthiness of our plantlife somehow?

I'm stumped, lmao.

I think it means we need defenses. I don't know how we build defenses to protect our Soulscape, but we need them. That actually tracks fairly well, and probably means it's the Tree that's not necessary for advancement as of yet, since it'd be coherent with the 'build a farm' option.

Huh. Maybe the Tree is the advancement. Like, we don't need a Seed the same way we didn't need to dig a Well. The Tree will just happen on its own. That could make some sense...

Kinda?

I think we're getting into Full Farming Memes here at this point though. My best knowledge of that kind of thing is from Sakuna though and all of its rice cultivation memes, and the big thing is that keeping your crops free of pests and diseases is mostly about having things like frogs and spiders on hand to eat the pests before they can spread diseases, and so forth.

Except we already established that we can't bring living things into the Soulspace? Even things that aren't alive yet but will hatch on their own.

Someone else can do a deep dive into 9th/10th century cultivation though and see if there's any hints there?

Here's a freebie,

You only actually need one of the so-called 'requirements' to advance to the next stage. You can advance without meeting the others, but it can lead to imbalances, stunted growth, or worse.

I mean, my overall goals with Halla is to map out the First Stage as thoroughly as possible, anything beyond that is just bonus.

Yeah, I'm not surprised that we can do this, given you hinted at it earlier. Still, I'd like to map out the first realm as thoroughly as possible... while we might not be getting any higher than stage two - hell, we might not even reach the second stage at all - I wouldn't want to stunt Halla's growth like that, and it'd also be much more valuable to map out all the prerequisites to a successful ascension.

Yeah, the upside of mapping all this out is that Sigurdr is going to be able to sail through later, because he'll know exactly where he needs to go for best effect.

Alright, since the vote is tied I'm extending it another 30 minutes. If the vote is still tied, I will flip a coin.

Doing a dive on Viking Era farming specifically, the big 'keep pests out measure' I ran into was literal walls. Big ones (specifically, they were made of sod and stone, and in Iceland, at least, shoulder height and 5 feet wide at the base by law). They were considered very important and a fundamental part of farming.

Which is interesting, and probably even more true in Xianxia Norway than in reality.

... Yeah, that would make sense.

So yeah, it looks like we need to build Walls in our Soulscape--maybe using the Gate as the, well, actual Gate?

...

Huh

That makes sense actually, we need to build actual walls because most of the Odr that comes in probably just spills out everywhere. By building Walls, we trap the power inside and allow it to further condense and accumulate.

We have a Gate but no Walls, fucking hell, it was right there all along!
