I'm assuming we can probably loot some good metal on our "Shopping Trip", or lacking that, enough silver to make good our losses.

I want to make sure we have some currency in case we need it, while bullion won't be useful until next turn at the soonest.

We're more likely to pick up silver on our raid than large amounts of iron, and, importantly, going shopping is an action of one sort or another, so there's an argument to be made on the iron. But you're not wrong that having cash might be handy, even if it is a token amount. I think both options have pros and cons.

Honestly, I'm fine with whatever as long as we're paying only in tools, iron, and silver...or sacrificing the arm ring if we really want to awaken Abjorn's fylgja right now.

I want to hang onto that arm ring, my instincts say getting a replacement would not be easy, and we'd probably regret not having it.

That's plausible. I honestly only put it in the plan initially because I didn't think of using the iron to pay and didn't want to use the work knife...which makes it impossible to get together 6 silver without the arm band. At that point it made sense to throw in the fylgja purchase because we were already losing the armband either way.

Keeping it is pretty solidly defensible if we can pay in iron, though, which is why I'm on board with that.

Btw... We sure we don't want to shell out for a lesson? Otherwise we'll have to pay her again for our kids.

No, she's already agreed to teach us seidr in general if we kill Horra (which includes this). Which we're gonna do anyway for many reasons. In the long run paying for this lesson is a pure loss, IMO.

She's only charging us in general because we haven't killed the bastard yet.

Honestly, one of my hopes is to just put together a posse and then just gank Horra by surprise somehow, but apparently we have to wait for him to hoist himself by his own petard first to create a good opening.

Not necessarily. One of my personal hypothetical plans is that we get some people together for such a possible exercise in the future while on the raid, use our Visit and some strategic Trick loaning to have our Fylgja scout him out this Winter, then ambush him (in the Norse sense) in the Summer. Possibly delaying a bit for pregnancy reasons depending on what happens there.

That actually seems workable as a plan...it just takes a bit due to the 'one visit per season' rule and definitely needing to scout him out.

Agh, I really need to write up the 'On Revenge' info-post too.

The Norse did not rush into things, especially not revenge killings. They planned, they plotted, they figured out every detail they needed before launching their attack. This may take weeks, this may take months, it may even take years (though something of that length runs the risk of nid)

Oh, definitely. I wasn't complaining, just noting that since we have to scout, then attack, in separate seasons in which we don't do other visits, it requires some setup. Which definitely enforces the 'takes some time' thing, which is good for genre and culture emulation.

If that friend of Steinarr we met at the wrestling competition is still there, we could get him, Halfdan, and the fighters of our family together and then reveal that the man who murdered our uncles has a farm in the valley again.

We definitely need to scout Horra out and know what forces he has access to first, but I'm not against this plan. Though we absolutely cannot tell Steinarr until the last moment or he will go off half-cocked. Honestly, given prophecies maybe we don't tell him at all? I dunno.

Seeress made it very clear we weren't to tell Steinarr, our mother agreed.

I just feel very strange about the idea that we would have walked into town carrying over a pound of iron.

Yeah, the question is why Aki (and the seeress) said that. If it's just that he will immediately ignore all tactics and run off to kill him, telling him as we actually head there would be fine...if it's more than that then, well, then we need to not ever mention it.

She would accept a cow. She's clearly willing to accept things we aren't carrying on our person (since we are not, in fact, carrying a cow). We then pay our debts offscreen.

Do people really want to give away the first thing Halla ever made, the creation that literally gave us our crafting trait rather than some iron? Why? I do not understand the logic at all.

People just aren't paying attention to the altered vote I guess and copy-pasting each other instead of the corrected one?

Exactly. Ooooo, I can talk about debt-sticks now!

Alright, so, obviously your average Norseman wasn't exactly rich enough to buy a sword. So what do you do when you want to buy a sword but don't have the cash to spare? Debt-sticks.

You walk over to the smith and say 'Hey, I want to buy this but I don't have the money right now. However, I will have the money soon/sometime/in a year."

The smith will think it over, taking into account your trustworthiness and so on and so forth before coming to a decision. After deciding whether or not to accept your offer of future-payment, you write the debt you owe down on a piece of wood before breaking it in half. The smith keeps one half while you keep the other as well as the sword/item/whatever you were buying. Once the specified time has passed, you meet back up together and pay your debt.

You can also do this for renting, like, say, mail for a raid and, in turn, the smith gets some of the raid loot.
