Ooh, this is an extremely good point.
The different gender politics are going to be a point of friction. Being familiar with the story of the Iron King should help a huge amount with framing the presentation of Celestial Empire and Emerald Seas in ways that resemble the Iron King as little as possible.

Beyond the other rationales presented (which are the driving force of my vote), it just seems to better fit the ambiance here, ya know? We're in a vaguely tense and ominous situation, safe but not truly comfortable, listening to a story at a fireplace fueled by sacrifice. The founding myth of a nation sounds like the sort of thing we should be hearing in an entirely different context, but this is absolutely the right place to tell a story about a catastrophe.

Fan theory is the topography of the world is a donut and the polar gates are a seal that de facto converts the world to spheroid. Also there's mythically giants on the other side.
My personal theory is that the world used to be flat until someone or something came along to make it a sphere and the polar crossover is the tie-off point of that process, with weak spatial reality as a consequence. This theory is based solely on the fact it'd be pretty funny.
