That is true, but it does not reflect on what I said.

If the dragon can take the library in either case, and you want that to not happen, making the action more costly to an extremely long-lived (and necessarily proportionally sensitive to risk) entity means that it is the best security we can have against a future hostile action.

If you propose that Cython will never be hostile or deleterious to the library - sure, my suggestion is unnecessary. But if we can't say that, then the next best action is to make the immortal lizard weigh its immortality versus books it can already read at its leisure - as long as it is friendly.

Edit: if we can get Cython to write books instead... Well, I can see great potential there.
One of the reasons I am voting for Cython is that I want Cython engaged with mortals. The library is a way for him to trade for knowledge and to interact with people. So when he figures out how much books written by a dragon will be worth he can trade for more knowledge. The chance to read his collection, prestige from having a dragon, and possible building a closer relationship with Mathilde are also reasons.

So random thought on the subject of the we as Librarians. Namely that when it comes to preserving books, especially ones that are read, one of the issues that come up is the effect of sweat and the oils on a person's skin has on the parchment. It's why when reading older books you get provided tweezers to turn the pages to as to avoid this issue.

Now I will need to check but I think the chitin of the We would avoid such issues. So that is another plus that could factor in to Mathilde's thought process when choosing them.

There's actually a bit of a discussion in the library/museum/heritage sector at the moment about how to handle old texts. Whilst oils from hands do cause damage over time, it's been shown that wearing gloves and using tweezers actually results in more rips and tears in the documents, as it makes it harder for people to manipulate them.

At the moment, each individual institution uses its own judgement about whether to mandate gloves or to allow barehand handling of old books, based on what texts they actually have and how often they are used.

You'd have to reinforce the shit out of it to avoid it cracking, I'd assume that would be bad

Something called Crystal Mist would make a very shitty bludgeon.
Obviously you don't just use the Orb itself, you just make a casing of stone or steel or what-have you around it in the shape of a hammer. :V

I do wonder if Kragg could build something awesome out of an Orb or set of Orbs. Maybe not a personal weapon, but still.

This is why we need to learn telekinesis.

Mathilde eventually opens a publishing house where the authors are wizards, a Skaven PhD (no, it is not the field; the rat has the PhD), and an emperor dragon.

I suppose you could define my concerns regarding Cython the way the Verenans do:

Will it run the Library like a Lorekeeper, or a Scrollbearer?

"There are two distinct groups of people within the Cult of Verena who seek dominion over libraries: the Lorekeepers who see knowledge as sacrament and wish to spread it, and the Scrollbearers who see knowledge as power and wish to hoard it. Identify which you are dealing with as soon as possible, as you will need two entirely separate kinds of bait to ensnare each. The Lorekeepers would value an institution who can guarantee the safety and spread of knowledge entrusted to it, and if you wish to present yourself as positively as possible to such people, a chapter of the Knights of the Scroll to guard your library would be the most effective way of doing so. The Scrollbearers, however, do not have a better nature that can be enticed thusly, and so you must resort to a quid pro quo approach if you find yourself in need of what only they can offer."

If it would run the Library like a Scrollbearer, I think we could very easily wind up with conflicts of interests that we would struggle to resolve or gain the upper hand in - and it becomes much more likely that the management of the Library would take directions we don't like if we aren't around anymore.

I also feel kind of uncomfortable with Cython, for reasons that other people have already brought up.

Say, are there any canonical examples of the sorts of enchantments made possibly by an Ulgu orb?

Now, my only problem with making the Orbs of Sorcery is that Mathilde probably wouldn't get one for herself. I mean, unless she just kept the Ulgu one out of any given set, but while she would be well within her rights, presumably, it would be mildly less impressive and obvious to Algard.

Then again, making him wonder what the heck Mathilde needs a personal Orb of Sorcery for would be funny.
If we donate 8 Orbs of Sorcery we should have enough CF that getting 8 more power stones is chump change. AV is the limiting factor.

Can some remind me please, how We's connection to books work? Do they consider books part of We purely by posession or do they actually need to read it first?

Though we can't have two options, early on I did imagine what it would be like if we took both the We and the Orphans. Imagine those kids reactions.

Feel a bit guilty because, you know, orphans, but the Orbs got me in a mischievous mood :p

I'm going to go ahead and assume there is either a more convenient method of creating orbs of sorcery, or the elves have a more convenient method of acquiring pure power of aethyr.
Maybe we could ask the Grey Lords about it at some point?
Once we have managed to impress them a bit more.

M: How would you make one of these? *shows orb of sorcery*
GL: You wish to learn how to make orbs of sorcery?
M: No, i want to learn how you make them, because my method is super inconvenient.

I am going to assume that the Ulthuan way of creating orbs of sorcery involves the Vortex.

It is a unique resource of many properties that opens to the warp technically.

And them using it as a way to flex elf superiority is in character, after all, elves made it.

So I am gonna assume Teclis's orbs utilised the Vortex to be made.
