Nevermind the fact that if we DON'T renegotiate with Mira and decide to work with Alric, I think she's might be suspicious or at least intrigued of what motivates us to go above and beyond on that case when we already have our own monumental project.

While I agree in part with you, we can also fall back on "We are friends with the Empress who is nee Haupt-Anderson and felt that due to being able to split credit and the need for haste I judged it unnecessary to come back to you" as a perfectly valid excuse.

It is a problem. Him gaining too much renown would mean solidifying his hold on his Magister Patriarch title, which means that if he wants, he can recall the Light Wizards that were detailed to the waystone project. Or, if he doesn't want to leave it bereft, assign much-less-helpful replacements in their place.

Not an issue, as per WoB because we will have split credit with him. In addition in the worst case we will still have Lord Magister Egrimm as our employee.

Are there as many giant, mountain-sized skulls in actual Warhammer as there are in Warhammer Total War?
It depends. Blood God's domain? Definitely. Plain of Bones? Definitely. Mountains of Mourne? Definitely. There is a place in the Badlands called the Giant's Stomping Ground, and I can imagine there being the skulls of Giants in there. Orcs like to fashion giant effigies of Gork or possibly Mork that look like skulls. The Nehekharans have giant skulls on principle as a result of their Bone Giants in the form of Hierotitans or Necrolith Collosus. The Northern Wastes are likely to have giant skulls on account of the big monsters and giants up there. Lustria and the Dragon Isles have utterly gigantic Thunder Lizards walking around that cause earth tremors whenever they walk, so I imagine they can have mountain sized skulls. Albion has some Bonegrinder Giants that might have died up there, so I imagine there are some gigantic skulls in there.

It really depends on the area, but it's not out of the question to have those skulls. A bunch of people like it for the aesthetic, and there are creatures that can produce them. You wouldn't find those skulls in the Empire, but certainly in some places.

I'm not sure he could really recall them. One of the reasons we wanted Egrimm's promotion was to make sure Alric couldn't boss him around. And even in the remote case where it's such a triumph that Alric ends up regaining his position due to working with us, then he'll probably be pretty well disposed towards us due to our help.

And if we cleared it out with Mira beforehand she hardly can bemoan us.

The last thing we want is to make a connection between the Case and the Empress. Much better that people believe we are doing this because we are paid by Mira, it's a convenient way to hide our true motivations.

Can't we just say we're interested because of our post in Stirland? We were spymasters there, we never managed to find out anything about Alberich, and now our past has come back to haunt us. 'This is unfinished business and seeing it through is a matter of pride' seems like a reasonable enough excuse.

That is not an excuse we can use with Mira and there is a connection with this case and the Empress because the murders are linked to the murders of the Haupt-Andersons and Heidi is claiming to be a Haupt-Anderson who was missed/the murderer was caught before she was selected as the next victim. I am not advocating to loudly proclaim this connection, I am saying that if people correctly guess that we are doing this for the Empress we have a valid answer that disarms suspicions.

Hmm. I don't remember this part. I mean, just taking Mathilde as an example, even though she's an LM, Algard as the Grey Patriarch should, in theory, be able to give her orders. I assume the other Orders operate the same way.
That said didn't we recruit Egrimm before Alric's failure r.e. the Supreme Patriarch duel, something I imagine that displeased Alric yet he couldn't stop a Magister, let alone a Lord Magister, from leaving.

We recruited Egrimm through Mira, who is already switching back and forth with Alric as de facto leader of the order.
I think it was after duel, but i can't say for certain.

In order to assure that Alric cannot boss Ergrim around we have to make sure he is no longer Patriarch, full stop.

There is also the fact that all the 'let's work with Alric nothing can go wrong' does take not account the fact that he wants all the credit... which means he would be incentivized to send Mathilde on a wild goose chase or in extremis put her life in danger so that he would be the last one standing.

Before people jump at me saying 'he would never kill Mathilde' he would not have go go that far, just be a little slower than he otherwise might be in a confrontation with a daemon.

If such a situation were to occur I don't think he would let Mathilde die. Looks much better to not only save the Unfahigers, but also a fellow wizard, an LM at that. It would put him into Mathilde's good graces, maybe even allow him to take all the credit in recompense, plus might be the beginning of drawing her into his camp, or at least away from Mira's.

Alternatively, the death of a LM would let him play up the threat, get back the chair and usurp the Waystone Project through Egrimm and Elrisse.

In unrelated news, we might want to send any congratulatory baked goods from Panoramia's mom for an extra round of poison testing. :V:V

The beautiful thing about helping Alric is that nobody can really complain. Calling it sabotage is a bit much since we are actively helping him. It's hurting Alric's political ploy without really being hostile against him.

After all, if Alric can succeed it can still assuage his ego even if he had help. It also proves to others that he's not completely good for nothing. After all, considering his recent setbacks, Alric might even be pretty happy to get a partial win. Don't forget that at least one of the Unfahigers died under his care, if more die, it's a very bad look for him that Mira can take advantage of. He doesn't know that we have a vested interest in the case.

On the other hand, if we help him, we are appearing to be ready to compromise and put the good of the empire above all else. If anything it's more diplomatic than him learning that we interfered in his investigation without even talking to him. It's gonna hinder us quite a bit if we must do all of our investigation trying to stay hidden from the Patriarch of the order that specialises in revealing what is concealed while he's alert due to being on a mission.

At the very least, working with Alric means better relations with him in the long term (unless we are able to make sure he never learns we worked against him). And if we are going to work with Alric anyway, better to get paid by Mira for it and avoid working with Alric without telling her beforehand (which might lead to misunderstandings).
I'm operating under the assumption that neither of the lights available to us is an idiot. They know why we are investigating Alric and if we negotiate a deal with Mira to sabotage him they will know that too. No amount of "Um, Akushually I'm helping him" is going to convince them and it definitely isn't going to convince Alric himself that us ruining his chance to keep hold of his position is a favour to him.

Given that she seems to be on Hortman's side and the latter hates him with the passion of a thousand suns I do not think he would see her as a potential ally, saved life or not

Why? I don't remember particular emphasis put on Mathilde eating anything, except pies in an apocrypha.
Fwiw, I remember commentary on Mathilde not knowing fancy food after the T29 Celestial social, what with 'bubble wine' and:
the little orangish-pink fleshy bug-things on sticks were quite tasty.
In addition, we know she's eaten slugs:
So you finally subject yourself to stage four, and you and Panoramia consume some of the mushrooms yourselves and are able to confirm previous reports - the texture is like a slug, except somehow able to become stuck in your teeth.
Mathilde, why exactly is it you know what biting into a slug feels like?
Being a peasant in the Empire often means becoming familiar with all sorts of unconventional sources of nutrition.
And I wrote a joke omake about shrimp after the Celestial social:
Warhammer Fantasy: Divided Loyalties - an Advisor's Quest Fantasy

You know one of the things I wonder is how much Mathilde and Regimand have diverged in terms of investigation techniques over the past 20 years. I think he is more of a hands on sort of fellow where as she tends to lean on mage sight and hitting the books for info.
