I just don't really see her in enchanting research as opposed to more esoteric fields like turning quasi-divine energy into the magical equivalent of gasoline.

Changes done I guess.
[] Project Distilling Dreams: The Rituals Naria discovered produce divine power but not in any usable form, distill it to something that can be stored and used
(Progress 0/60 Cost 120,000 IM)
----[] Lya's 2nd body (4d6 Progress); Dany (4d6 Progress);

[] Dreamshaping Cost Reduction: Shaping the dream is technically possible, it is also ruinously expansive with current methods. That can change with more studies.
(Progress 40 Cost 10,000)
----[] Aenie Caleris (4d6 + 2d6 Progress), Volantis Scholarum Branch (2d6 Progress);
Yeh, I have somehow forgot about assigning Ann. I blame the last RAs' results coming in after I made the last write-up.
And the tiredness.
On that note, G'night.

isn't Velen under our researchers aswell or am i misremembering? couse i'm pretty sure we had him on mind's games previously

He's not a Researcher by mechanics.
2d6 he gives (lacking "Researcher"-modifier) was appropriate on a low-burn action that also was thematically real close to him.
Not really good enough otherwise though.

The only other guy included with 2d6, Svitran, is because he is in a unique position of being too low-level to do combat shit, but having helped in too many different RAs to not count as a dedicated researcher of some kind.

If there is a good enough action that desperately needs any sort of roll, Velen's the guy, 2d6 is still 2d6.
But currently I don't see one of the sort.

  • [X] One of our Verdant Phoenixes will travel to the cavern Garin located, along with a team of Pech engineers and guards.
-[X] The Verdant Phoenix will use its Commune with Nature SLA to determine the path through the stone needed to reach the Gate. Once this has been determined, the Pech will use their innate abilities and a set of Titan's Tools to open up a sturdy tunnel through the stone, one large enough to quickly transport those of our forces who will be involved in assaulting Casterly Rock.
--[X] While the engineers work, the Verdant Phoenix will use prepared Control Water spells to keep the flow of water in check. Once the tunnel is close enough to the Gate that the last remaining stone can be quickly removed at a moment's notice (using a Disintegrate, Stone Shape, etc), the engineers will make sure to leave enough of a drain in place that the flow of water will remain steady when the Verdant Phoenix relinquishes control of it.

She never had one assigned to her by DP, unlike Ann, actually.
And we never went beyond Ann alone in overspecializing who can do what best, either.

That's for the better as far as I'm concerned, too - too few RAs of every type to keep everyone involved meaningfully if we go there.

I suppose we can move Dany regardless, though.
I just assumed security measures to be more time-sensitive than God-crafting.
Dany is arguably far more skilled in dreamlands specialization than Aenie Caleris. What keeps her from breaking the research scale is that she's usually too busy to commit the time.

Sorry if this question has been answered a million times before, but I am just wondering what month the Invasion of Westeros is tentatively planned for? I remember Viserys telling Lord Velaryon (sometime in the middle of 293) that it was planned for by the end of that year... but clearly that didn't happen. Or is it Soon™ to keep the exact date a mystery/hidden from divination, a la what happened with the Invasion of Tyrosh?

End of the next month. We are currently running through the last preparations and are already starting to nuke anyone left who could stand in our way.

Interlude CMXL: Mechanisms of Empire
Mechanisms of Empire

Thirtieth Day of the Third Month 294 AC

Emerald flames flowed through the cavern, echoes of another time. Rippling water bound to nature's will, stone like clay under the pech's fingers molded as bulabar engineers helped craft a tunnel that would allow soldiers to reach the gate while the water could still flow freely through its new-made drain. It would be the work of days for the tunnel to be complete, without the Titan Tools it might have been weeks, but they knew well the rippling mortal world was there behind the walls of stone, the path beneath the Rock to end the heirs of Lann the Clever as he had ended the Casterlys, by stealth and trickery.

Marwyn smiled at a job well done as he passed by the faded carvings, musing who could have carved birds in this skyless realm. Ah well, there were grander mysteries to study here.

The Herald returned to the world of flesh with a creek of steel and a hiss of steam as the hot steel of its scales touched the warm humid air of the Deep. Its posture shifted slightly at the familiar surroundings. If such as it could be said to have emotions than it might have been counted relieved to return home. It did not come back alone.

Three of its brethren had been shattered upon the anvil of Ymeri's armies, their remains stacked in its arms. Another four left not even shattered steel behind, broken beyond recovery by enthralled giants of the Queen of Inferno. The Herald did not regret their fate, but it was content in knowing some could be recovered.

Lost 7 Heralds (3 Broken; 4 Destroyed)

This day it bore words not of its lord but to him. "Holy Eshisha, speaking in the name and by the will of the Lord of Light, called in Essos R'hllor the Red, Eternal Flame-that-is-to-Be, asks of the use of the Imperial Skyship Dauntless to carry a weapon of Shadow into the Heart of Ymeri's domain. This carries peril beyond battle alone. Should the request be refused I carry the apologies of Lady Melisandre of Asshai for she must bear this weapon herself and it shall likely destroy her."

"Why is she apologizing?" the King asked a touch softer than expected. Surprise? Worry? The Herald was faintly frustrated at not being able to read its lord's mood.

"Firstly being unable to accompany you in your war against the Great Enemy," the herald replied, pausing between the two points of the answer. "Also for being unable to carry this news back herself, for her arts are needed to counter the glamors of the fey on the borderlands of their domain which many of our allies of the Flame are not yet adept in countering."

To the Herald's surprise the King smiled then. "Make a note the lady is attempting to manipulate me into saying yes to the use of the Dauntless by reminding me of the threat to her purpose. Second note, it is working."

Though the Herald was not the most adept in understanding humor it sensed that the words were at least adjacent to the concept. It did not ask for clarification. After all, it did need something to muse over when on guard or otherwise at rest without immediate tactical or strategic concerns.

What if the King's reply?

[] Agree to have the Dauntless deliver the Shadow Shard into the heart of Ymeri's palace

[] Refuse to have the Dauntless deliver the Shadow Shard into the heart of Ymeri's palace

OOC: I struggled with this quite a bit since there was a lot of rolling in the background, but nothing quite worth showing in screen. In the end I decided on doing another Herald PoV to show cased their mechanistic mindset.

I definitely want to say yes, but we need cheese. All the cheese.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP. I liked the Herald POV, especially that last bit of internal monologue. 🧐

Farewell, fallen Heralds, you will be avenged! I'll update the Armory to account for the loss of 4 of them when I get back to my computer this evening.

I would much prefer it if Mel went in and did the thing.
A Mythic Rank and a level both would look like the low end of rewards for her.

@Artemis1992 Use of the artifact would destroy her utterly with no hope of resurrection. That's the price of using it.

I read it that she has a chance of using it without destruction, due to her skill in Shadow-Magic.
Well, her chances are above 0, unlike for Unthandonathi and Eshisha, but still not even remotely good. Their hope that she could have full control of the artifact and wield its power properly didn't pan out.
But then there is the problem that, if Ymeri doesn't kill her, the backlash from channeling enough of R'hllor to survive her attacks almost definitely will.

The important question is more if she is really just bluffing to blackmail Viserys and somebody else will do it in her stead if the plan with the Dauntless is rejected.

...I'm not going to refuse contingent on the idea that she might survive it and grow more powerful. That's seems grossly out of character.
