But is the problem even Alrik?

Two of his sons murdered each other! Or at least one of them tried to murder the other, and it ended with them both dead. Seems to me that implies the problem goes a little deeper than "bad king".
Quite possibly it goes deeper than him, and Belegar at least suspects that's the case. But internal clan issues can be ignored or overlooked by outsiders; the key issue in the eyes of the dwarves as a whole is that Alrik's refusal to become a slayer and hand over the throne to Ulthar is deeply and publicly shameful. Compound that with the already bad optics that are bound to be on him for the mutual murder, and things look very messy.

Probably? From a dwarf perspective the guy had three kids, two of which ended up being kinslayers and the last of which was a horrible radical. The common denominator is Alrik, and dawi focus on ancestry, lineage, and age as being the primary sources of legitimacy and standing means that if all the guys kids turn out to be shameful then the obvious place to look for ancestors is to their shared ancestry.

Arguably, the fact that the last kid helped greatly in reclaiming a Karak may weigh more than radicality in a Dawi's mind... though it probably depends on the Dawi.

Meanwhile, in BelegarQuest 4
Picturing offering Belegar's reaction when if we offer that as a project option... :V

Freshly returned from the Karag Dum expedition, and ecstatic over the progress on her requested library, Loremaster Weber has some new suggestions for you, including one in particular that she shared privately away from the council.

[ ] Mapping - Loremaster Weber believes she can create an self-updating zhuf map of the Karak, with the possibility of tying it into further magic or runes down the line to create a detection system for any large underground movements. Cost: ~5 Magic Colleges Favor, ~5 Runesmith Favor, 5000 Silver, 1 Year

[ ] Waystones - With the Okral finally gone, and with the search for Grudges in KaK having come up clean, now may finally be the time to begin investigation into the Waystone nexus that is your home, potentially severing Thorgrimm's theft of your holds power. Cost: ??? Magic Colleges Favor, ??? Runesmith Favor, -??? Old Hold Reputation (Working With Elves), Having To Work With Elves

[ ] Assassination - The situation in Karak Hirn is becoming increasingly concerning, and Loremaster Weber is one of the greatest assassins in the world. It would be trivial for her to infiltrate Hirn, discover the exact details of Alrik's misdeeds, and arrange a death by natural causes. Cost: Yet Another Chip In Your Honour

[ ] Dragon - The Serpent of Karag Zilfin, "Cython", apparently quite enjoys his occasional trips to your Loremaster's peak to discuss zhuf and read books. Mathilde believes that she can use this to gain buy-in from the dragon into the upcoming Library project, and potentially leverage for any future negotiations. Cost: Dragon likely gains some influence over the Library, 5000+ Silver, 4+ Barak Varr Favor (To Be Spent Largely On Additional Books)

@Jyn Ryvia Regarding our next adventure, I get where you're coming from and also don't see Mathilde staying K8P's Loremaster forever.
But becoming a Stirland baron as a Grey Wizard close to being LM really doesn't sound appealing to me. It's not where our talents lie and it's not very interesting either.
I'd rather work more closely in Grey College internal affairs (coupled with teaching classes and taking an apprentice) or becoming someone's Military advisor or doing the BOAT BOON traveling adventurer thing after all or trying for a position directly in the Imperial Court.
it is only an option.

things i would be cool with.

1: becoming the tuner: still spend most of our time in k8ps, but still getting involved with college politics.

2: dukedom adviser: for some reason a duke of knightland (probably politics) wants a wizard in their court instead of a damsel. (low key mathy will try to help the local Ranalds while still doing her job. )

3: Hidi ask for help in the court of the empire or to take the job in Rikland.

4: doing are best Lara craft (or drake) impression.

Let us be pragmatic if the dude has dirty laundry, airing them and letting the Dawi do the rest would suffice. Dawi are not human, if a king is rotten, they act.

No that is exactly what we can't do. If we were to it would be precisely to keep dwarf from fighting dwarf, because unless he is a Chaos cultist or something there will be some dwarfs who will die for their king.

You forgot "annoyest"! It's important, you know. ☝

Actually, I disagree. I think people, and wizards too, already could be affraid we were stalking them in the shadows. :D

PS. I found Ranald's sign: 🤞
I think I mean more specifically in a 'surely she has better things to do than come after me personally' manner.

Sigmar doesn't personally run after every witch with his hammer, much as he might like to.

Now, if we were seen unleashing Dusk Riders in a public place, thus letting the infinite undercurrent of generic Stirlanders know that we are actually the 'head' of an entire 'order' of supposed Shadow Knights, we could open up the possibility of Dusk Riders haunting the dreams of malefactors.

Umbramancy is pretty weak. Why bother sticking Dhar in for its own sake when we can get stronger and more reliable benefits without it?

It's not that variable. We'll have it on one setting for the entirety of the expedition, unless we get stuck in.

(The protector is still the best choice despite that, of course.)

Just think, we'll get mad dorf rep (Selflessly helping all dem dorfs)
We'll get mad Zhufbar rep (selflessly helping all dem land monitors)
We'll get mad Karak Dum rep (selflessly helping all dem chaos dorfs)

waaaiit. :V

And that's where fun part begins. Fear doesn't work out of logic. They can try reassure itself, but in the depth of their mind... Especially ones who does or did something really big or nasty, like, Black Magisters.

Ranald should understand that it is a great tool, but not something that applies always and everywhere.
Ranald also gave the coin the limits it operates under. Lifting or altering those restrictions- assuming he's actually capable of doing so, now the coin's been created- is something he's unlikely to do.

There's a big difference between a poor leader dying of old age/in battle/etc and an actively shameful leader dying in a violent internal coup. It's very likely there exist oaths between the holds that would essential force a response in that situation (pacts of mutual defense, oaths to not allow the death of their kin to go unaddressed, etc), to say nothing of how dishonourable and shameful breaking your oaths to your liege to actually perform a coup would be.

If the dwarves of Karak Hirn have exhausted all other methods of forcing Alrik to abdicate the other kings aren't going to suddenly murder all the dwarves of Karak Hirn because they deposed him because at that point he has gone against dwarven society in general and thus is no longer under its aegis of protection. If Alrik manages to make the current grumbling into a grudge and then fails to resolve it then the kings of other holds won't protect him because at that point he broke so many rules of dwarven culture that they would simply treat him as a criminal (what does happen to dwarfs who refuse to acknowledge grudges?).

Fundamentally, this is not Mathilde's problem; this is not even Belegar's problem and could only be Throgrim's problem if Alrik fucks up so hard he needs to be called before the Dammaz Kron for a reckoning. The idea that Mathilde needs to assassinate a bad king to save the dwarves from themselves is infantilizing dwarven society in general as being unable to take care of themselves in the most basic of ways and smacks of protagonist syndrome in general ("Mathilde is a hard woman who needs to make hard choices").

I mean, maybe we'll do enough some day to have the coin operate on two faces at a time constantly. That'd be neat.
