I see wall of text, I vote.
[X] Crake

Long as there aren't any competing walls of text... then I don't even have to read it
The problem here is the guy is directly asking us to explain our entire position and "what gives you the right?!?!"

And the only way to do that is to give a fucking dissertation that touches on politics, economics, history and even STEM (Summoning, Thaumaturgy, Enchanting and Magitech) subjects in order for it to make sense. Which is why Viserys is getting headaches every other chapter and planning on making higher forms of education more accessible to the silly tribal primitives.

Edit: Or we could threaten them with dragons. Going by the rate Richard is grinding through his teeth (quickly beginning to outpace our ability to regenerate them with each Kingdom we visit), I think our sworn sword would prefer it at this point.

I'm also okay if DP wants to summarize some of these points for the sake of the narrative.

He will likely do that, and has in the past, especially in the case where the person being presented the argument has no objections except on one particular point or another.

....When I read this I could only think of Richard thinking of rereading the history of Maegor to just see if he was actually wrong or not.....Is something wrong with me?

We can only regret that he did not go far enough.

I'll stop, people complained last time I made that joke. Not without reason, too.

The day we decided to become King was also the day we decided to be conscientious of both our own duty but also the principle of justice. It was unjust what was done to our family, but it's also unjust to force our principles onto others without ever bothering to listen to their objections or opinions at the point of a sword or by burning them and all they love to the ground.

No, Maegor's actions cemented Targaryen rule in a way that peaceful negotiations just lacked. He showed all of Westeros why you do not stand against Targaryens, and he broke the Faith Militant. For all that Jaehaerys is revered as the Conciliator, I don't doubt that had Maegor not gone on a rampage and basically wiped out most dissension, Jaehaerys would have spent quite a bit more time fighting instead of negotiating. Maegor laid a lot of the groundwork for Jaehaerys to build on.

Before Maegor, the Faith was getting pretty damn bold in challenging royal authority, rebelling every time an incestuous marriage happened, etc. As much as people hate to admit it, Maegor was responsible for a lot of the following stability after he died. People finally had sense knocked into them about not rebelling against dragonlords.

Maegor's actions led to stability. By breaking a military force not loyal to the Crown he was able to save future generations of rulers a great deal of pain. The faith having an army would be disastrous for royal authority because anytime the king was "acting in a way that disgraced god" he would have a full-scale rebellion.

It just encouraged them to plot and scheme instead, and the Targaryens had no other levers except dragons to wield against this kind of chicanery, social, political or economic, thus they were presented with a problem they could not swing at... and then. Inevitably. Kept losing more and more power, every King crowned.

It should be obvious why Viserys has an intense aversion of the idea of trusting in just the feudal compact when it served his House ill before. They only had that to rely on for centuries and it eroded every bit of good work they laid down from Jaehaerys onward.

Look, if you're going to use the fake Russian 'X', at least be creative with your naming scheme. :eyebrow:

Always been sceptical about how well Jaehaerys did during his reign. He supposedly did well but did he? Jaehaerys did some questionable stuff to me. The Great Council seemed very dangerous for a king to do I think.

Maegor basically did a set up for future Targs but many people think he did too many cruel things. Some were just not smart. Great with military but very bad PR and politics.

Jaehaerys was apparently an asshole with good PR. That's a retroactive thing on GRRM's part granted, he decided that all of his characters needed to have deep, well-defined flaws, years after first writing them, and that's fair, but it just manifested in Jaehaerys who did so much good for Westeros as being, on a person-to-person level in terms of his relationships, a really terrible person. Who helped set things up for the Dance with his misogyny.

in the NegaQuest, Viserys meets the Goose God.

Viserys: "Who... are you?"

Goose in all of it's glory.

Goose: "Hͤͫͪͦ͛ͤ̓̆ͪ̿҉̸̮͎̝̬͇̟̯̳͇̘̺̯̙͚̬̘͉̲̩͠ ̸̢̡̮̜̤̱͈̰͕̝͓̰ͬ̇̏͐̎ͤͭ̉̏ͣ̋̂̾͜O̡ͥͯ̊̒̎̈́͌͐̾̅̍͛ͪ̉҉̭̼͕̻̜̬̦̪̪̀͝ ͩͮ̋ͯͤ̿ͨ̎̀ͪ̀̇҉̡̢̣̝̰̙̹͚̜̪̙̫̱̪̞̠̞̀N͋̇͑̃̇̏́̌̒̇̑̈̀̀͛͢҉̢̖̲̪̫̥̗͖́ ̏̇̈̃҉̟̣̙̫̟̩̱̼̬̘͚͠K̡̜̮͎̞̘̝̩̭͇̮͖̗͖͙̹͕̏͗̓̌̅͛̑.̴͊ͩ͒̎̊ͭͩͤ͂̂̒͆͑̉ͮ͌̋̀̎̀͝͝҉̠̳̠̣̠̩̯̣"
