[X] Speak of Zeqing as a person, and the insights you gained from interacting with her. [More personal, may be difficult to articulate. More open, may prompt more personal responses in turn and unpack issues regarding Hanyi.]

Ling Qi opens up and makes herself vulnerable approximately once a year, so we're about due.

[X] Speak of Zeqing as a musician, and the way that your style and compositions changed from interacting with her. [More impersonal, easier to talk about. May offer some insights into music skills from introspection]

If people wanted to do this instead of sparring, I don't know why they also don't want to really commit to it and have a real conversation. I wasn't in favor to begin with but we should at least double down and not awkwardly waffle back and forth.

How is talking about a shared interest not a real conversation? He has stated that he enjoys music. Ling Qi likes music. Let's talk about music. I don't see any waffling back and forth here.

Suddenly LQ's affinity and history with music is backtracking on her social issues and not a 'real conversation' topic?
I just want to know who this Grandmistress Lei is.
I imagine LQ might too, if Bao Qian's picking up on her influences in LQ's art.

Indeed. Like, hell, talking about music is the thing that most directly relates to his question even!

Ikr
The funniest thing is he's going to talk about these musicians and their styles and schools of philosophy and whatever, while having listened to almost none of their actual works, due to the way Music works and the loathe to record that most who follow the Path have.

Speaking of Grandmistress Lei, does her title have something to do with the Grandmaster title given to formation masters who craft "neutral" formations that anyone can do and so advance the art for everyone?

Did she advance music without imprinting her domain upon it so that other people can follow her instructions with even extremely diverging ways? If so, it would be interesting to see exactly where music and formations intersect in this manner.

EUREKA!!
The devils in the details but ive figured it out!
Well be on the fast track to becoming fast friends if we choose to talk about Hanyi!
But why you ask is that? ELEMENTARY MY DEAR VIEWERS!
Instead of chit chatting about a topic he is already heavily familiar with as its quite literally his job so its a drop in the bucket and won't enamor him to our general Ling Qiness how do we become friends?
Well who are the Bao? Traders yes but also heavy on FAMILY doublers so as their a clan, might as well be their family motto "Never leave family behind".
Every Bao we have encountered have always made a point to find and check in on their strange spider sibling so if we talk about our favorite ice fairy it will be something for him to become invested in because they love family!
We won't be turning into a gibbering emotional wreck as Yrs has said and we get to talk about something MEANINGFUL rather than just music.

Not only that but we've seen spirits and humans have children before with Su Ling so he might even have records or even living relatives of their clan if were lucky.

Because sparring and talking about deeply personal topics don't have to be the only two ways to go. The goal was to help her socialize; in the case of Bao Qian, to start building a friendship. A casual topic relevant to their shared interest in music is a nice way to do this.
"Deal," he said with a weak chuckle. "Let us move on to lighter topics!
Literally, the conversation got so awkward that Bao Qian himself recommends lighter topics. Why do we repeatedly have to over-commit to every action? Let's give LQ the opportunity to have a casual conversation and build a normal friendship with someone. Not everything needs to be done with a doubling down mindset...

Look. I know the Gen Z formula for service work friendships is rapidly bonding over the most heavy and traumatic recent/ongoing experiences in our lives because we have no time for a social life beyond coworkers or the anonymous internet, but like. I have found this to be a poor idea when someone prompts you to
" "Deal," he said with a weak chuckle. "Let us move on to lighter topics!""

I duno. Relearning how to have engaging small talk that is actually meaningful again was like learning how to play soft quiet ambient music after being deafened for so long. I only wanted to do more metal because I couldn't really sense the subtleties/meaning of proper small/safe talk anymore. Being overly ambitious is a sincere trait of ours, but like. This whole venture is ambitious, for both of us. He clearly sees how much of a struggle we are (even if we look goddam fabulous doing it <3) and I don't want to ruin our babystep attempt to have a "normal" social interaction with trying to be all of ourself right away. We're not Cai Shenhua, we're LQ. We're just as Sincere, we're just. You know. Complicated. And we told him when he was pushing on something we were holding close to ourselves. So we're still being Sincere okay.

Granted: Peak Sincere LQ is taking the greedy route, rolling a nat 100 and helping Hanyi make the best record ever with her sister and her sister's new cool friend who she teases us about and we blush and it's cute.

but like. We can't just keep rolling dice like that on non-explores. Gotta save it for the big moments baybeee 777

Ling Qi needs to be checked mentally, looks like the peasant host is acting up again, this poor poor gown.

hah XD

Bao Qian REALLY needs the help, he doesn't know anything about Ling Qi as a person and that makes the whole thing agonizing because the person with all the info doesn't know how to use it to ease the tensions and the person who knows how doesn't know anything he needs to even aim in the right direction

This is literally the topic asked about.

I much prefer finding a mutual interest between both of them to discuss as a way to reorient the conversation from the awkwardness that's developed.

I mean, most of the reasoning for choosing the Personal Talk option is to open up to Sir Bao for the ultimate goal of better relations but I really doubt doubling down on the same tactic works when it's clearly already making LQ and thus Bao uncomfortable and fishing for another topic, any other topic, to latch on to.

Lastly, it's still a good way for LQ to open up herself through "what Music truly means to her" as a follow-up from Bao's explanation of the various music styles of Emerald Seas.

You could argue that discussing how Zeqing shaped Ling Qi's views is more personal, yet at the same time it takes the focus away from LQ and pushes it towards the Spirits instead, like how to handle Hanyi.
Bao is here to get to know LQ herself and while LQ's relationship with Spirits is important, it isn't what Bao is looking for when he asked about her goals/ambition, for example.

I feel like the impersonal option is just a half-measure at this point. I personally wanted to rip the band-aid off, kinda. Though LQ may be feeling uncomfortable right now, I think she'll ultimately benefit from pushing past her comfort zone and challenging herself. A good way to clear the air, clarify things to stop the awkwardness is to be frank about whats going on. Right now LQ is clamming up. If she becomes more open like the personal option suggests, there's a chance the air will be cleared. Also Bao Qian will deff reciprocate because he's socially adroit enough to see that's what needs to be done. Bao Qian opening himself up to her will likely help her feel like they are on equal ground. Of course the arguments for the impersonal option has its merits too.

The way I'm looking at this vote is "the process/method of opening up isn't ideal" and so that's a ends justify means argument. Thus, I dislike the idea of "ripping out the band-aid" as a doubling down measure because it's relying on a good conclusion and putting the burden on Bao to fix LQ's issues.

Do we really want to do that on a first dinner date?

Because my goal in voting for this scene wasn't "I want to ratchet up to Maximum Intimacy on this social link ASAP," it was "I want Ling Qi to get more comfortable in a one-on-one personal conversation with someone she isn't already emotionally invested in."

This works best if the dinner goes well and, as @AbeoLogos pointed out during the last vote, Ling Qi can see that it isn't so scary; she can still dislike this sort of thing, I don't want to turn her into Gu Xiulan, but I want her to at least not be incredibly nervous about it. As such, giving her the topic that is easier and lighter to deal with is likelier to bring that about, as opposed to getting Raw and Real with him.
