I wasn't thinking of the wizards, who are already somewhat more sensitive to that sort of thing anyway, I was thinking of the staff that inevitably have to exist, because I can't imagine there's wizards that go around cleaning or cooking for large numbers of people.
Isn't that what apprentices are for? To do all the drudgery for you and make them pay you for it? :p

I highly doubt that apprentices have the time (they need to be in lectures and learning including researching) plus there's inevitably going to be areas where allowing apprentices would be dangerous, but allowing non-wizards would not. Or that the apprentices shouldn't be allowed to know about, but that you can clear a number of staff for.

Wouldn't it just evaporate out of the water the moment it's not in the source? Besides I figured you'd just use it as a filter for what ever outlet system you have rather than constantly being active and if you had to have it in the main water reservoir have it work on a loose timer cleaning the water once every x period of time. That said I guess it's not really our issue yet until Belegar comes to us with the idea.

Personally i was thinking a two-stage filter. A first stage filtration pool with Hysh magic to cleanse chemical impurities and Dhar, then some way down the piping a runic filter that repels all magic in the water that flows through to get rid of the Hysh. We know that repelling magic is a relatively simple exercise for Dwarven runecraft after all.

It might be technically possible to build in enough secondary filtering methods and redundancy and failsafes that you could guarantee that every drop comes out completely magically inert, but it would be a lot more difficult and a lot harder to sell to a Dwarven population than just building Runic or non-magical filtering in the first place.

I wasn't asking if it poisons them or does something negative, but what it does in general. Humans are mutative, so I figure it'd change them in some manner, if not in a strictly negative way. If they don't react negatively, then maybe we can segregate the water? Hysh has spells that heal and remove diseases, so long-term drinking of hysh water might make humans healthier. Same if something can be managed with ghyran food.

Long-term studies of this type haven't been undertaken, and are unlikely to be approved because if it does go wrong, it will go wrong in a beastman/chaos cultists/chaos spawn kind of way. The Jades and Ambers might have studied the effects of this on themselves, but if so they haven't shared the results.

The fief is not important, but I want to see what's happened to it in the years since. Did Man With Slightly Larger Herd ever convince his good-for-nothing daughter Girl With Quick Hands to take up weaving and marry Boy With Broken Nose? How much has been changed since Mathilde dropped in, invested several hundred gold crowns, and ran off leaving the villagers to vill on their own once more?

Less important than the councillors but I'd still like to see more people around here for much the same reasons.

Really happy with the idea of a random someone approaching us each social turn. I honestly wouldn't mind if it was even something like 3 locked/3 choices. :V Locked in duckling club, lock in a subvote of a fellow councillor, and whammo QM's choice.

It's a little too iron fisted to really implement, especially given we end up tactical voting even the social stuff, but I can Didn't Sleep Ponder about these things if I want!

Ok so while an arcane mark that isn't the Mark of Ulgu or shrouded isn't what I was hoping for, but I think there is a benefit that can be obtained. So since our arcane mark draws fog/smoke/mist towards us is it possible to make a spell that either creates fog/smoke/mist constructs or controls fog/smoke/mist? I remember one person mentioning a spell quite a few pages back that BoneyM approved here:

The spell in question
@BoneyM would this count as a Warrior of Fog spell:

Mathilde's Incarnate Shadow Technique
Creates an illusionary copy of you out of thick mist moves independently. It moves extremely fast and attempts to avoid being directly spotted, while still remaining somewhat in view - always in the corner of someone's eye.
This spell ends at dawn or if the shadow is struck by any form of attack.

Essentially a spell to generate false-positives in the guards, putting them on edge when nothing is there or sending them searching in the wrong direction.
deals with manipulating a copy of us out of the mist. Seeing as this is a possible spell and innately ties into her Warrior of Fog trait (seeing as its directly using fog to manipulate people) I was thinking this would be a pretty neat avenue to research into. If controlling fog/mist/smoke or creating constructs out of it is feasible I imagine Mathilde would just manipulate the smoke/fog/mist following her into various shapes. Maybe a shadowy cat trailing behind her :V

[Laughs in hypersomnia]

Less flippantly, on my current meditation cocktail I swing between insomnia and hypersomnia, which has not only destroyed any sort of sleep schedule but also means that there'll be times when the 24 hour mark is two hours into a fourteen-hour crash. Hence why I keep from committing to any schedule beyond 'at least 24 hours from the opening of voting'. My unofficial goal is no more than 48 hours, which outside of travelling and the Great Hiatus I've stuck to.
Gah. I hope my comments did not come off as a pointed "when is that lazy QM gonna show up and start writeslaving for us" sort of thing. I was just observing that the official time was up, and so I wanted to get some stuff in since I didn't know when you would show up to close things. My apologies.
There's an unspoken long-term ploy Mathilde's planted the seeds of: turning a monopoly on Queekish into a rivalry is one way to sow division and serve the Under-Empire.
Yessssssssssssss.

Undumgi. I think we really have to meet with Francesco, and I want us to hang with Oswald, because he is an absolute legend who got literally disemboweled and then was so pissed off that the military wouldn't let him keep fighting that he joined the K8P expedition to do it again.

To quote myself:
I don't actually think the fief needs us and am totally fine saying that we will never manage it actively ever again. I just want to see the changes that Having Mathilde Weber As Lord made to their lives. I loved @Mopman43's story and I want to see the canon version of that. I want Mathilde to see the canon version of that. I think it would matter a lot to her to see how she has mattered to regular people living their lives, and thematically it makes a really interesting counterpoint to Belegar's worries. I could easily see the narration tying the two together directly -- from Belegar's angst about the material well-being of his subjects to Mathilde looking in on Sonningwiese and wondering how much has been due to the money she poured in and how much is due to her-as-symbol.

You can't be right. Dwarves are resistant to magic, which is why magic affects them less than humans. Humans, on the other hand, are the most mutable race on Mallus and would get changed by exposure to magic long before dwarfs start turning to stone from it.

Basically:

While that's true, Dwarves also can't 'absorb' as much magic as humans. Basically the humans can ignore it because it's probably about as much magic as there is if they walk around in a storm or near a large fire, while the Dwarves typically repel magic, but can't repel it if they're eating it.

Think of it as Dwarves having High Damage Resistance but a middling HP pool while Humans have low DR, a moderate HP pool, but a trickle of Regeneration.

Anything that doesn't bypass the Dawi DR is ignored, but if it's consumed the what might otherwise be an okay amount of magic bypasses the majority of the DR and starts chipping away at their HP aka initiates the stonification process*. Instead of filtering out of their system, Magic turns Dwarves to Stone.

Humans on the otherhand are so mutable that they have an innate tolerance to Magic. The vast majority of the time, a singular casting of a Human Spell on a Human target will do exactly what the spell is supposed to do and nothing more. Any remaining traces of magic will eventually filter out of the system with next to no effects, like a liver filtering out alcohol.

If you end up consuming enough alcohol (Magic) then your liver may get some scarring (mutations/arcane marks), but generally speaking humans are able to get black out drunk (receive semi-regular War Buffs from both Wizards and Priests) with no real after effects.

The Watchmen were specifically affected by Dwarven Battlemagic as wielded by a Living Ancestor, The Greatest Active Runelord, with said Battle Magic's effect being "Make Them More Like The Platonic Ideal Of A Dwarf."

And I think Kragg got a crit.

So that specific case is something of an exception and more resembles going on a drunken bender in the classy part of town as paid for by a celebrity and waking up with a taste for The Good Stuff/Straight Everclear.

*Which is what canonically happens to Dwarves who have magic enter their system or who channel magic. That's why Runes are so important to the Dawi.

Nothing. Humans don't react negatively to magic in their system.

Plus, WoG.

Why not just go for Runecraft in the first place then?

but it would be a lot more difficult and a lot harder to sell to a Dwarven population than just building Runic or non-magical filtering in the first place.

The narrative that's being told here, as far as I can read it, says:

It takes a significant investment for any Rune Based Infrastructure Investment. Really for any Infrastructure Investment, but especially for Runed Systems because Magic.

At the time that K8P fell, no one was expecting any of this. Within the Dawi time frame, everything went wrong immensely quickly, and no one could really imagine things going wrong like they did, nor for sabotage to happen.

Ranger-like thinking still isn't exactly a mainstream thought process after all.

So protecting the water supplies from poison?

What proper Dawi would ever need to do that?

And then the Skaven did it and Karak Eight Peaks fell.

The Skaven will not succeed in doing it a second time.
