So the province isn't in bad shape at all, but the government's ability to affect change and growth at their own leisure and discretion is?

The province seems to be doing just fine. Safety is at an all-time high and trade is flowing like sand through an hourglass. The primary problem is the government and their mono-focus on Sylvania at the expense of their ability to actually function.

[X] Marry them...
- [X] Reinhild Gerber
[X] Stay single. Marry for love.

Direct trading connections are good, but having a unique product will help the economic development of Stirland. Plus, seems least likely from what we've heard to go the feminine wiles route and his children will need all the help they can get in the brains department.

Adding in the 'marry for love' angle. Unlikely, but he is a precious cinnamon bun.

I like him as the charming yet clueless platonic friend too much to marry.

[X] 'Head Ranger' (Spymaster), Internal Focus

Could be persuaded to also vote for another role, but I think this one is amazing. Internal threats are going to be hard for anyone else to get the high-quality info we can from, and a few actions with Doppelgänger have some real potential to turn them on each other. As we can probably do a better job for less time investment than just about anyone else we would have a decent amount of free time to pursue our own projects. More, the combined stealth and martial nature of the job means we'd be working with a good number of people that have high-tier skills we would love training in...

[X] Court Wizard

Cause people are voting for Steward and I do not want another economy-Quest.

[:V] Pressgang Maximilian

Keep making the nerd-papers do the good readingy word thingy, Max!
Why ":V" ? We could totally pressgang him! Regimand even suggested it!

["]Tie a rope around whichever of the young'uns you got to write these for you before someone else snatches them up."

More seriously, at least poke him and see if he's willing to be pressganged and how much pressure is required. Being Mathilde's associate in K8P could be quite the attractive job for a Journeyman, particularly one looking to get on the good side of dwarfs.

In their defense, Sylvania has long been a major obstacle, perhaps the single largest obstacle, to Stirland's ability to actually function.

[X] Court Wizard

While I'm tempted to ship Mathilde with Anton, I also know that Mathilde type of guy is someone like Van Hal and if it is like that, Anton is nowhere near like that. Also, it felt like Anton suggestion for marrying Mathilde is less for actual romance and more because it is the most safest option. As for the role, I do find court wizard to be the best position to help out. The other position, there are others who could cover it pretty well or even more better. But dealing with unexpected threats, I find that fits our forte the most.

So wait, does that mean that whatever economic good the EIC does for Stirland doesn't make up for the lack of taxation and other such things Roswita has done? For Stirland that is, economically. As I understand it the EIC is at least partially invested in Stirland as a whole.
Well, there are still some taxes that EIC pays to Stirland. The bigger issue that can be taken from this is the amount of power Roswita gave to EIC. Monopoly on guns, owning a sizeable land, and the dependency Roswita has for it. Seriously, if Wilhelmina was a less decent person, she could probably do a Marienburg and screw over Roswita greatly. Still, I will give Roswita credit that she at least knows Wilhelmina, but that is also the crux of the issue. Sure, EIC at the moment is benign and is completely in support for Stirland prosperity. But later down the line, this can all change depending on the shareholders and the one leading it. What Roswita did here is causing a big headache for the future down the line and her successors. Though hopefully enough, we won't need to deal with this.

I believe insider trader is very specifically about using info about the company you are privy to because of your position inside it for self-enrichment. So, Mathilde the EIC shareholder is not doing it - she is using information about things outside of the company. But Mathilde the Head Zhufokri of Karak Eight Peaks Expedition probably is doing insider trading.
To be specific, a definition of "insider trading" is the illegal practice of trading on the stock exchange to one's own benefit through the use of confidential information. There's no specific requirement that the confidential information comes from a position inside of a company, but that is the most common way people get confidential information.

So, in all technicality, this isn't insider trading because there is no Stock Exchange. Furthermore, the information she has isn't confidential because anyone on the expedition would know of the river of silver flowing to Stirland.

In reality, however, insider trading can be, and is, much more complicated than that, and in an age of tremendously slow transportation and communication, the one who has access to literally in-human or supernatural means of speedy communication will have an in-human/supernatural advantage in exploiting new opportunities as they make themselves known.

One thing I just thought of is that should the court wizard win it would likely be well in our remit to investigate any mysterious goods or artifacts that come out of the far east.

I still think being the steward would be the most fun for building a massive spy network throughout the world but I suppose we don't need to be in charge of the trade to get agents into the trade network.

Court wiz and gun engineer have such strong lead, total of 163 voters makes flip unlikely assuming there are another 20ish votes.

The Elector Count's teasury ≠ Stirland's economy. The economy is probably booming; the issue is that Roswita doesn't have a way to extract wealth from the boom.
That depends on just how ruthless is Wilhelmina is in enforcing her tax farming rights and leveraging those to crush competition.

That's the problem with tax farming: it encourages the tax farmer to be as greedy as possible, and often results in an economic depression.

I'm sure we can finagle it as part of our wizard duties. After all, isn't part of the job of a Grey Wizard to to Know Everything?

For reference, I think this is the current list of College Favor options:
Study: As a Magister, you're no longer barred from returning to the Grey College. If you've been pulling your weight for the Order, you can return to it to further your studies. Each costs 1 College Favour.

[ ] Intrigue and Tradecraft.
[ ] The Use and Creation of Poison
[ ] Spells of Grey Magic (teachers' choice; multiple spells)
[ ] Spells of Grey Magic (your choice; one spell)
[ ] Swords and Swordplay
[ ] Ritual Magic
[ ] Psychology
[ ] Imperial Law
[ ] Practical Diplomacy

[ ] Power Stones and their Creation
[ ] Runes and Runecraft
[ ] Wyrdstone Containment
[ ] On the Education of Apprentices
[ ] Searching for and Identifying Animal Familiars
[ ] The Creation of Artificial Familiars
It may be that you also commissioned another magical item or spent favours in other ways; what was it?
[ ] Dispel scrolls (2 for -1 College Favours; can be taken multiple times)
[ ] Taking a scroll for a single spell with you on the trip (-1 College Favour, cannot be Battle Magic, can be taken multiple times)
Apologies, but there's no easy way to do this without curtailing the possibilities: The difficulty of a spell is based on the casting number in Realm of Sorcery; if the casting number is a single digit, it's Relatively Simple and 2 favours. If it's between 10 and 19, it's Moderately Complicated and 3. If it's 20+, it's Fiendishly Complex and 5. I ask those with access to the book to highlight interesting possibilities for those that do not. If you want something more complex than a spell in an item, outline what you're looking for and I'll give it a pricetag.
[ ] Regrowth - Ghyran, instantly restores someone to full health from any state up to and including 'recently dead'. -9 College Favours
I think this is everything we've been able to spend College Favors on in updates. I can't find guidelines on the actual favor pricing of Battle Magic effects (I was thinking casting number but looking up Regrowth that's 12+, so it's not that; maybe it's a flat 9?).

I'm pretty sure that outside of updates Earthing Rods were said to be 2 favors each and +1 Magic staffs currently unavailable for any Favor value, but I can't find those citations at the moment.

@BoneyM, could you please answer a few questions about whether it is possible to spend College Favor on the following and, if so, what the associated costs might be?
  • Getting a Perpetual Apprentice to serve as assistant/general minion
  • Getting a Journeyman/Magister/Lord Magister of a specific College/with a specific spell to come assist with a specific question/project/calamity
  • Getting copies of the Colleges' books for our library (is this the same 50gp+0/0/1/1/2 for common/extensive/rare/very rare/extremely rare that we have with Dwarf Favor, or some other ruleset?)
  • Acquisition of an animal suitable for being a familiar, or a specific type of animal so suitable
  • Getting powerstones for our personal research/use
  • Having a wizard lab/tower optimized for magical research/other specialized effects built
  • Acquisition of specific esoteric desired items (ex., what if Mathilde really needs a Lustrian flowering plant or the tooth of a sea drake or something for research, presumably mages have requests for this kind of thing constantly)
  • Getting permission to do push-the-limits sorts of research (ex., Johann is literally going to poke the skaven and their warpstone, Mathilde is in a great position to research multi-wind interaction and ways to avoid creating dhar when it happens, or to study probably-corrupted Waystones with an eye toward unfucking them, and the Articles are intentionally vague enough that what is okay and what isn't is basically a judgement call by the Colleges; can we pay in Favor to represent burning political capital on being given dispensation for this sort of thing instead of being uncertain whether we're crossing lines?)
That's all that comes to my mind at the moment but if we can get a solid set of answers together it would be nice to compile them all into the Important Information threadmark, as per the dwarf rep one.
