...so I was angrily ranting in my head about why 90% of the faith are dumb, when the phrase 'how about you explain to the old gods why the idea of punishing children for the sins of their fathers is a dumb one!' Came into my mind.
Huh.
What if we brought Lucan and Danielle to the old gods and had the old gods list their grievances?
This is probably a stupid idea, but it might actually accomplish something.
Problem is the old gods aren't visiting the sins of the father on the sons, they are punishing the servants for the crimes of their masters, as hitting a gods faith is the best way to punish that god.
Sure all the mortal participants in the Andal invasion are long dead, but the godly masterminds who ordered it are still alive and thriving, and it's them the old gods want to punish, harming their worshippers are just a way to do that.
This is a grudge between immortals, the servants might change with the times, but the rulers remain the same, and it's those rulers who it's truly about punishing.
The old gods want the Seven weakened and humiliated, the easiest way to do this is to kill their most powerful worshippers, but that don't mean it's the only way, if the Seven was actually prepared to acknowledge and pay for their crimes, they could give us some of their artifacts to sacrifice to the old gods, this would weaken them as they did to the old gods, and sacrificing some of their divine power is about as sincere as a godly apology can get, but of course the Seven will never do this, so we have to carve the power out of their strongest servants.
The old gods problem isn't really with Andal bloodlines, while wiping certain ones out, are part of how they plan to humiliate the Seven, those bloodlines are being targeted because they pay homage to the Seven, if one of the Andal lines had converted to Rh'llor in the meantime, then the old gods would have no interest in them.
Well, to be fair she did not try to kidnap our people.
As far as we know she did not take any action against us at all.
We didn't really try to kidnap her people either, we didn't know they were there until the attack was already started, we only planned to kidnap Lucan's people, and summoning a Kingkiller aimed at us, rather clearly showed where he stands in regards to us.
Personally I say we release Danelle's people as we have no problem with them, but keep Lucan's people, as in summoning a creature specifically meant to hunt us down, he has rather decisively proven, that while the church of the Seven as a whole might not be our enemy, he certainly is.
Do keep in mind this was
Baelor, he was not he most stable man even in life.
The fact Lucan would summon an unstable man, with the specific purpose of killing us is telling though.
More serious approach:
[X] There is no proposal that can benefit the Faith and the Faithful alike. The best outcome, the one least likely to end in fire or blood, is for the Faith to weaken and fade, to split up into small sects with little political relevance. That is how the Faithful will survive and be protected, while the Old Gods are satisfied.
-[X] Can you act against your gods for the sake of their followers? Then we can find an agreement.
The old gods don't demand near that much, they do demand reparations, but not to the point of rendering the Seven impotent.
To make it clear this isn't an issue of pride. This is the fact that the old gods want the faith shattered or several swimming pools of blood, and I'd much rather given them the first rather than the latter.
There are more options than that, the old gods would probably enjoy the sacrifice of some of the Sevens artifacts more than the sacrifice of Seven followers, especially if said artifacts was brought before them by a Chosen of the Seven, so we basically have to convince Danelle, that the Seven themselves owe a debt to the old gods, and the only way to avoid a bloody war, is getting them to acknowledge and pay this debt.
[X] Plan "No concessions, but seek a calmer conversation later".
