It is a fine way to clear jungle...I guess
No it isn't. Shadow of the Doom clears the jungle AND gathers sacrifices!

By making more fire! There's no forest fire if there's no forest!
This particular instance was mostly okay, yes. We still should have passed the DC by four or so, but a -5 or so on a roll of 1 is something I can deal with. My point was about how the rule in general leads to silly outcomes and incompetence from really skilled people, and I don't feel like that is a good thing for a heroic fantasy game. This would be more compelling if Viserys not recognizing the gribblies was a central facet of the last updates.
As it stands Viserys' strengths, knowledge of magic and also of monsters or otherworldly horrors, allowed him to locate the nest and pointedly decide to take a backseat to the action, all in a lazy afternoon.
Doesn't scream 'random bout of incompetence' to me.

Also, think about the reverse of this rule, a nat20 always succeeds. It means that, for example, salmon can swim up waterfalls in a couple of minutes. That might be cool in a game with a different tone, but not in DnD.
I despise critical fumble tables for a similar reason.
I keep reading it as junglelaser
An apt description.
Upon further thought, I wouldn't be surprised if the Verbal component of the spell is "Pew! Pew!".
When applied against Fey it's more likely to be "FFFFFUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOUU!!!"Upon further thought, I wouldn't be surprised if the Verbal component of the spell is "Pew! Pew!".
How so?While I was researching literal blood magic for this I came across Blood Tentacles again, @Goldfish did we end up getting a PoSK for Viserys? As previously noted the dueling capabilities are insane.
How so?
Standard or Full Round to use the tentacles, damage is low, BAB + CON/CHA to hit on a normal attack.
You generally have better things to do with standard and full round actions than deal 2d6 and healing the same, when you can cast 5th level spells.
This is why we should get gloves of object reading for the Inquisition!

If we had Viserys learn it by retraining something on his next level up, it would have a caster level of 20 when used. How so?

We already need 7 knights for the Sept Guard and everyone else should go towards the Order of the Knights Griffon.Imperial Guard, made of Legion Tourney Victors (turn into regular event to weed out PCs/level 7s+) initially (re)trained by Richard, afterwards recruits are (re)trained by Captains. Possible to recruit outside of Legion, likely to get Erinyes, especially once we get a few hundred or a few thousand Erinyes. End size aimed to be a Legion, purpose is to be Elite Legion amongst Elite Legions, Kingsguard replacement, prestigious position to drive Martials towards, recruitment ground for moderately leveled Martial PCs, source of Richard Apprentices.
Brienne of Tarth, Chosen of the Warrior, possible mini-Richard candidate?
the image is kinda gruesome, though :/If we had Viserys learn it by retraining something on his next level up, it would have a caster level of 20 when used.
It creates one tentacle per caster level. Viserys could use all twenty of them as a Standard Action against a single target within 15 feet, potentially inflicting 40d6 damage while giving himself an equal number of Temp HP.
That's pretty damned nice, IMO, especially considering that the tentacles don't allow a saving throw or Spell Resistance. If you hit with them, you're golden, and since it uses BAB + Charisma bonus, chances are most of them would it.

A dragon from whose chest burst 20 tentacles that thoroughly fuck up whatever he's in close combat with?
That's some DS/Bloodborne-level shit.
For additional pants-shitting points, have that be an aerial fight, with Viserys utilising Perfect maneuverability to its fullest
