Mmm, we might be suited to stealthily dealing with defenses or opening the gates of the watchtower, or whatever it has for an entrance...

My thought here is that we're not all that great at the whole assault thing. In the vanguard though we should have a good shot at responding in any given direction since we are a highly mobile caster. Second, I do want to talk with the Engineer-if anything is likely to be sabotaged, it's the cannons. Hopefully we can coordinate with him to head off any Goblin/Skaven ideas there. Third, I want to talk to Muggins because he's one of the commander we're most likely to be coordinating with on the battlefield.

The Amber Wind does not blow here

Whoops, hadn't thought of that. It all worked out well in the end though, thankfully.

The only opposition of note in the whole Underpass was in fact the snotling city? I just hope the Throng isn't gonna pay too hard for all the good luck so far.

Anyways, a campaign contribution vote will likely be in the top 3 if the last few weeks are anything to go by, but I think I'll go all in on social activities while they're still available. Let's go get some pie with Muggins at least!

So, even with our much higher martial, a decent roll from the squig means we fail entirely and it gets a (inneffective, but that's due layered magical wards) hit in?

So, if a wimpy college kid (us at quest start) with their martial 8 face a Martial 16 greatsword, they have to roll 60-70 maybe a couple times, while the greatsword rolls 30-40, to defeat it?

I know the effects of higher martial do have further narrative effects in combat, but it doesn't matter if success and failure are measured in absolute terms of an opposed dice roll.

Code:
M WS BS S T W I A Ld
4 4 4 4 5 3 4 2 8

Scout
Stubborn
Wizard (Level 1)

Equipment:
Great Weapon (+2S, -2I)
Dwarven Revolver (S4, Armour Piercing, Quick to Fire, Extra Attack, Multiple Shots x3)
Enchanted Robes (5+ Armour Save)

Activated:
Torc of Fire - one use, grants Fear OR allows a friendly unit to reroll a failed Leadership roll.
Seed of Regrowth - Four charges, activate to restore all wounds of Mathilde Weber or a unit in base-to-base contact. Will be used automatically if Mathilde Weber is slain, restoring them at the end of the next combat round. A Charge is restored when wiping out a unit, either by overrunning or wounds; this cannot take it above 4 charges.
Runic Belt
- First Rune: One use only. A hostile spell cast against Mathilde Weber or a unit she is in will be countered; the caster takes an automatic wound and cannot cast the same spell until they relearn it.
- Second Rune: +1T (already added to statline), any model that successfully wounds Mathilde Weber takes a hit at +2 to the Strength they hit with.
- Third Rune: Immune to fire.

Relevant Spells:
Aethyric Armour - Grants 4+ Armour Save
Bewilder - The target gains Stupidity. Short range, can be done instead of shooting.
Blessed Weapon - All attacks Mathilde performs count as Magical.
Dread Aspect - Grants Terror, once per turn deals 1d3 hits at 1d6 strength to an enemy character or unit at close range
Mockery of Death - if the target fails a Leadership roll, they are removed from the fight. Can only be done in combat instead of attacking.
Pall of Darkness - creates an area of shadow that blocks line of sight
Shadowsteed - Does not count as a Mount; instead grants Strider, increases Movement to 8 and grants +1S on a charge. If wounded, before armour save roll a d6; on a 4+ the wound is removed. if this happens twice in the same round, the Shadowsteed is removed.
Substance of Shadow - Grants Ethereal, can only be cast in darkness
Take No Heed - If in a unit, Mathilde Weber cannot be the target of attacks.

Armour Piercing: -1 to armour saves for wounds caused by this weapon.
Ethereal: Not slowed by terrain, non-magical attacks cannot wound them.
Extra Attack: Grants +1 attack when used as a weapon in close combat.
Fear: Units must pass a Leadership check to attack a Unit with Fear, otherwise they strike with WS1.
Quick to Fire: No penalty for shooting at a charging character or unit.
Scout: In the tabletop, this lets the model deploy outside the usual deployment zone. For this Quest, it will be handled narratively instead.
Strider: Can pass over any difficult terrain without trouble.
Stubborn: Does not get a penalty to Leadership for being outnumbered.
Stupidity: Must succeed on a Leadership roll or the character or unit does nothing but move forward slowly.
Terror: Units or characters charged must pass a Leadership roll or flee. Units that cause Terror also cause Fear.

We don't need to openly assault though, we'd be better suited ninjaing and stealthily doing stuff. It's one of the best ways of getting through a siege in (normal) medieval warfare, getting someone to open the gates from the inside.

19 Martial is a mere WS4? Man, an Elector Count was a mere 15-20 Martial, that's kind of sad. Van Hal was awesome, but in this light that's kind of pitiful for an Elector Count hero.

I think it's more that despite the "loss" our ability was such that we didn't so much take a hit as take advantage of our abilities and equipment. The squig latching itself ineffectively like that made it vastly easier to kill.

What mundane armor grants the same armor save?
Heavy.

Remember, Martial translates to our entire combat potential. Think of it as points on the tabletop, instead of translating directly to stats.

And we're absolutely nuts with all of those special rules. 10/10, would take every time. Because you can stick your wizard in your bow unit and have them much more secure against fast cav, or put her in your general unit as a nasty challenge denier.

I would seriously argue we're well suited to opening the gates/unlocking the doors/whatever. Doing sneaky saboteur stuff while the main force distracts the defenders.

If I recall correctly, that is his Martial score before bonuses. Which is to say, he was Martial 15-20 in the same way that Mathilde is Martial 8. After adding in all the random assortment of skills, traits, and equipment that he used, I would not be at all surprised if he was pushing 30.

Edit: Found the source on this claim.

This is a 'flaw' of literally any system where chance is a factor. And also of real life, just look at how narratively unsatisfying the deaths of Harold Godwinson or Gustavus Adolphus were.

Abelhelm would have been WS5. Martial does not translate directly to WS - it's part WS, part Ld, and part something the tabletop game doesn't have a stat for.

There's nothing mere about weapon skill 4. That's the level of greatswords, witch hunters and knights, it's pretty damn impressive. Even the elf knights like silver helms and veteran dwarf warriors are considered weapon skill 4.

It's only the best of the best of the best who reach weapon skill 5 or more. Dwarf longbeards who have been fighting longer than most men's fathers have been alive and prodigious captains of the empire can reach weapon skill 5.

Edit:
[X] Join the assault on Und-Uzgar

If we join the assault we might be able to do some sneaky assault stuff like what we did against that noble back in Stirland.
