As another argument for focusing on scouting the ogre over general exploration, consider that the worst case scenario of it being a part of an ambushing force is also the one where Darklight's idea of coming back to look for it later is the worst option, since that means 1)they will be hard to find 2)there's a chance of them finding mathilde first.

Thus, scouting the port is fine if the dragon ogre is unimportant, but the worst option if the ogres are a serious threat. And given that it's the result of a 4, I wouldn't be that willing to gamble on the former.

We have to know that's going on.
A Dragon Ogre awakening at the wrong time and place could tear through our throng until it hits the Runic Warriors or some Slayers get lucky.
The regular infantery won't stand up to them.

So yeah, Cold Ones. While unlikely, just imagine making a breeding herd and be another form of monster cavalry. Though considering how difficult it is for the Dark Elves to control them, I doubt humans could do it.

We can't kill it, it's a fuckmothering Dragon Ogre, but definately we can't ignore it either since this thing could wreck the expedition, especially if it's part of a larger group. Better find out more.

Just had a stupid, terrible idea. How big are Dragon Ogres in relation to Mathilde? And how resistant are they to fire? Since they are creatures of Chaos, wouldn't Kragg's rune belt attempt to burn away the chaos taint around it? Since the belt makes Mathilde super tough, could she survive being swallowed alive and attack it from the inside? Sure, it'd be disgusting and dangerous and hard to breathe, but it can't exactly defend itself from its throat or stomach. Have fun picking this apart.

A: The belt burns away corruption from Mathilde and Dragon Ogres are not demons whose very presence spreads Chaos. Plus, the flames are minor flames, not a bonfire, and probably won't inflict notable damage.

B: How exactly would Mathilde get out of his stomach after he theoretically dies? There isn't exactly enough room to swing a greatsword in there.

C: There's a very real chance that the ogra would just chew his food five times, overloading our Regrowth charges.

Some are large enough to be mistaken for a mountain.
And this is probably not one of those, given that Mathilde did not confuse it for the volcano she was looking at.

I'm fine with either I just don't want to attack it or report back yet.

You're right on one count; we should probably not follow up on the dragon ogres personally next turn regardless. We also shouldn't follow it right now, just report to the Expedition when we get back and let their collective prowess take on the problem. Here's why.

Let's say that we have an entire dragon ogre clan up in the mountains. It's functionally impossible to hide a slowly marching army of a hundred thousand from any group with even casual awareness of their surroundings, let alone one who has the kind of view that mountain peaks provide, so we cannot effectively hide the Expedition's existence from them. We also cannot take them out personally, because Mathilde doesn't have that kind of firepower.

So, if we ignore them for now and report their existence upon our return, what happens is that the War Council makes counter-dragon ogre contingency plans. These plans are probably something like "hope they don't attack, and if they do, swarm them with demigryph knights and any artillery we can rapidly bring to bear", because the War Council isn't interested in taking unnecessary losses fighting someone who isn't their objective, so they're not going to authorize an assault in force against the dragon ogres unless they're clearly aggressively hostile. Likewise there's no reason to not plan on hitting any attacking dragon ogres with all force we can muster to minimize losses. To make sure that they can actually make use of these plans if shit should hit the fan, they order all their scouts to keep an eye out for dragon ogres in the whole general direction that they think there might be dragon ogres in.

In contrast, if we follow this dragon ogre right now and successfully maintain stealth long enough to track it to its clan (no guarantee) and then escape unnoticed to report (also no guarantee), the War Council makes the exact same contingency plans except that they know exactly where the enemy is based so they allocate more scouts in that direction as a superior early warning system.

I don't think the relative benefit of the second case is worth the risk of Mathilde being noticed by the dragon ogre and then attacked/ambushed/generally squished, or worse, noticed by its whole clan and then same. Likewise, the benefit of Mathilde scouting for them personally again in future turns only moves us to the second case instead of providing any greater return, so it won't become worthwhile at any point in the future.

The only time we'd need to know exactly where this dragon ogre or group of dragon ogres live is if we're trying to lead a killteam after them, and I don't see that such a team exists or is likely to exist in the near future.

Trying to track something that can outrun and outfight us seems like a bad plan.

I read "Dragon Ogre" and wanted to find the "AAAHHH!" reaction button. Anyway.

We should be able to outrun it, if it's 'standard' size. Outfighting it is an entirely different matter, they're prodigiously strong. Attacking it doesn't accomplish much should we win, if it is indeed part of a larger group, other than alert them that something is attacking Dragon Ogres.

Mathilde has shadowcloak, intrigue 17 , pall of darkness, bewilder, and shadowsteed. Finding her is hard, while actually chasing her would be an exercise in futility.

As for those normal scouts, they have none of those things (well, they might have the 17 intrigue). If the council needs to deploy them in a wide net, the ones that actually find the ogres have a significantly higher chance of being caught and eaten than us.

While if we were an other mage I'd just go for press on and scout, we're an Ulgu mage so we possess the spells necessary to hide from him and can run with the Shadowsteed.

Wow people are really underestimating Dragon Ogres. These things are fucking terrifying murderbeasts as a default, @BoneyM have there been any thunderstorms recently? Because if so it might still be storing up lightning it can throw around.
