I am pretty sure they were ordered to spearhead the second wave, it fits the overall strategy. So it's unlikely the blame lies on them, or at least, it's not on the level of desertion or disobeying orders.
I just reread the assault, the Greatswords were (meant to be) behind us in the fourth wave.

Also, the quote we discussed with Van Hal was about walls forming a trap for your enemies if you take them. I think we should recall that, quote Magnus, and order the artillery to fire. It did seem to be the plan, and why else drag the artillery up?

BoneyM must be chuckling at all the arguments and justifications we are throwing out there from:

Save the town!
To Release the Dragon!

I assume if we use the dragon we'll evacuate everyone first, including the civilians. It might be worth considering this simply because it will ensure the absolute least amount of allied casualties and might actually result in less civilian casualties in the end if we give plenty of time for evacuation.

While the town infrastructure would be an almost total loss we'd still have the walls intact and with our supply line could probably keep the civilians fed and then resettle them.

I'm pretty sure we won't be evacuating the civilians, the Dragon and setting the town on fire is a situation where we Murder Death Kill everything in town and make sure nothing escapes.

Seems like it. He was quoting Magnus the Pious, but with cannon it'd have resolved the situation.

Meanwhile, going over the battle since we have a bit more info now on how things stand:
-Initial breach: Black Guards of Morr vs unresisted gate. Success. Gate taken and held by knights.

-Second rush: Gustav with the best swordsmen and spearmen of every regiment, charging on foot.

-Third rush: Dwarf slayers charge. Presumably unstoppable.

-First, second and third wave stands down to rest from their charge. Dwarfs probably didn't rest. Tactically makes the most sense for them to occupy the flanks to prevent the dead from falling onto the main column.

-Fourth rush: Abelhelm, Mathilde and the main Army of Stirland(minus their elite swordsmen and spearmen). Greatswords behind vanguard of Army. Primarily 4th Division based on the casualties
--Round 1: The charge
---Mathilde 104
---Abelhelm: 81
---Army 1
--Round 2: Army not pushing. Greatswords advancing through army?
---Mathilde: 41
---Van Hal 1
---Undead: 59
--Round 3: Army not pushing. Greatswords advancing through army?
---Mathilde: 34
---Undead: 46
--Round 4: Army not pushing. Greatswords advancing through army?
---Rescuers: 8 <- Greatswords based on positioning
---Mathilde: 82 <- Runefang equipped
---Undead: 42
--Round 5: Mathilde goes full Dynasty Warriors on the undead
---Anyone?: 46 <- Based on roll name, the first set of rescuers are dead or broken. This roll determines the second rescuers, who should be the Slayers or Gustav.
---Mathilde: 96
---Undead: 9
--Round 6: Rescue have arrived
---Rescuer roll: 68
---One of multiple possible rescuers.

At this point the status is:
-Light Wizard - In the town. Status unknown
-Ameythst Wizards - Outside town, ready to counterspell
-Kasmir - In the town. "Thick of the fighting"
-Refugees - Put into quarantine away from the warcamp. Proven to be infiltrator later.

Then the healing
-Round 1:
--Kasmir heal: 6
-Round 2:
--Camp attacked by infiltrators: 76 vs ???
--Light Wizard search: 1
-Round 3:
--Kasmir heals again: 5
--Mathilde prays: 76/80
--Abelhelm last save: 3

Night has fallen.

State of the army:
-Dwarf Throng: On the walls, setting up cannon.
-Jovi Sunscryer: Burning like the sun
-Amethyst Battle Wizards: Joined battle in town
-Gustav: On the walls in command meet
-General 1: On the walls in command meet
-General 2: On the walls in command meet
-General 3: Presumably in the field
-General 4: On the walls in command meet
-Halfling General: On the walls in command meet
-Amethyst Patriarch: On the walls in command meet
-Asarnil: On the walls in command meet
-Dwarf Engineer: On the walls in command meet. According to him the dwarfs were busy setting up cannons as per Abelhelm's last instruction.

-Undead source: City Hall
-Enemy Necromancers: Not on the field. Presumably they're awakening more of the dead.

So on assessing the current outcome?
I think the Greatswords are most likely dead because they SHOULD be the first Rescue roll based on positioning. If so, we got a second problem brewing: Marcus held 1/4 of the EIC shares, which means control of the EIC depends on his heir if any/.

Also I think the army shattered because...what happens to an army when you take out all the experienced line infantry to form the wedge for the initial breach, then let the rest push through? That's the sergeants isn't it?

I assume if we use the dragon we'll evacuate everyone first, including the civilians

Might want to rethink the assumption, at least when it comes to the civilians.

[x] "Or we could do the same with infantry, with my Battle Wizards providing support, sapping the strength of the enemy while bolstering that of our forces - though if there are necromancers in the Town Hall, they could try to counter the spells."
[X] The vacuum must be filled. Step forward and take command. Fulfil Van Hal's final legacy in the manner that it begun.
[X] Do nothing with it; your role is to safeguard it.
[X] "The reason pushing through here would be so risky is that we can't tell which are civilians and which are enemies. If we treated them all as enemies..."
[X] Assemble enough greatswordsmen, expert soldiers, get the wizards to enchant their weapons, they are to be supported by pistoliers and the wizards , they are mostly there to support ordinary soldiers against a few of the infiltrators.
[X] Asarnil gives a few demonstration of his capabilities with some enemy refugee witnesses on some uninhabited buildings, destroying them utterly.
-[x] First and foremost he is a , terror and deterent weapon making the living surrender and disarm with a convincing bluff of razing this town along with every men women and children( a bluff).
--[x] second a hammer, smashing large groups of undead, fortified resisting areas with artillerys help with army backing him up if needed. Until enemy surrenders and disarms.
[X] Generals, dwarves and soldiers, wizards establish a base to fallback to, where invading enemies can enter in limited numbers, limited avenues to get to the base. killzones. Near the limited avenues to the base where large amount of enemies can gather for artillery or dragon to kill.
-[x] rehorse cavalry, enchant weapons to deal with infiltrators undead with wizards help.
-[x] Quarantine zone where refugees and surrendering soldiers can stay, far enough from the fortified base, where infiltrators , enemies will have to move far from quarantine zone that collateral damage is a nonissue.
--[x] warded entryway to quarantine zone to incapacitae, secretly detect necromancers, infiltrators.
---[x] artillery to be used in killzones and fortified resisting areas until enemy surrenders and necromancers, if wizards and Mathilda need help dealing with them
----[x] army advanced defensively using information gathered ny Mathilda, setting up fortifications and killzones
-----[x] a messenger with escorts or a bird that can contact possible reinforcements.
[X] Mathilda get information from refugees, captured soldiers using either threats torture, persuasion and hostages to extract vital information. With promise of keeping collateral damage and bloodshed low .
-[x] persuade and release some of them (refugees and soldier) to be Mathilda's messengers to the rest of town to evacuate areas to quarantine zone, convince living soldiers to surrender, to limit collateral damage.
-[x] Mathilda infiltrating town to gather data about reistances, undead and necromancers, taking opportunity to assassinate or capture any necromancers for information if doable.

If we could evacuate the civilians now without much trouble we'd be doing so.
Since that's not the case, with all the sleepers and berserks and possible regular resistance, evacuation can't work while also fighting the undead.

So just to check, what was the plan for after this and we get to the castle? I'd imagine that it involved burning to the ground, bombarding it into rubble, smashing every brick and then salting the earth.
We don't have a full plan yet, but looking at what Gustav did to the Blasphemy of Blood, I think that sets a good precedent. Only now with with more artillery, and a dragon.

[X] "If you've no desire to take this town intact, Deathfang is only a horn's blow away."

Drakenhof has brought nothing, nothing, to the Empire but pain, suffering, and death.

Burn it to the fucking ground.

Is there a reason that's not an available option? It doesn't sound all the complicated to evacuate soldiers and make loud announcements that the town is going to be completely purged and everyone has a short time to leave or else they'll be purged along with all the zombies.

We do need to set some space aside for prisoners, with a decent kill zone surrounding it. It makes the logistics much easier if we have a zone where we can say to the populace: "go there now or die." We can sort them later. Presuming we can teach the amethyst wizards how to spot a dhar matrix. Considering how much effort we've put into learning how to communicate just such magic theory we should be able to by Verena!

Narfi approached you, holding out the Runefang.
Nice.
Shame we won't get to keep it beyond the campaign.

We have spent enough people trying for this town. Blast some holes through it and claim the rest.

People won't be able to leave. Not touching the question of their loyalty or infiltrators or hiding necromancers in their midst, they won't be able to. There are undeads fighting our soldiers on the streets. We pull out soldiers and then it's only undead on the streets, and a fight at the gates (where you want evacuation to happen). It won't be an evacuation, it'll be the same mass murder with an ironic "hey, we did warn you, it's your own fault you're dying, really".

Evacuation in good order is one of the most complex maneuvers even with pure friendlies.
A mixed group of PoWs and time bombs? Nope

Shell it to rubble, fry it with dragonfire and then roll Purple Suns over the rubble, then dragonfire the dungeons
