Obsessing over this paper strikes me as having several potentially bad ends. Some of these have been pointed out before, but together paint a pretty bleak picture.

- A bad roll leading to a trait opposed to Pragmatic. Say Tunnel Vision, boosting Learning and penalising everything else. Remember the other possible split loyalties? Obsessive focus on a single piece of work sounds a lot like that... meaning Boney has given the downsides some thought.

- It'd be very hard to justify the time spent to Van Hal already, so if something does go wrong with what is her actual job (like a revolt amongst the Watch or Julia embezzling hardcore, or something we've already missed) it could jepordise his trust in us. He said use your judgement, and our judgement is to spend more than half a year on a magic paper, then continuing past the point it's solid? That's... poor judgement.

- We are a Spymaster, not an ivory tower academic. Many Wizards effectively have no other job.

- Could put us on a path to risking Slaaneshi Chaos corruption through obsessive perfectionism

- Narratively, Mathilde is fed up with writing the paper. Pushing herself past that might have negative health results. Why do you want to punish her any more? Let her let go!

The paper is perfectly serviceable for our ends (Magister bid) as is. The thing is, it's probably not our greatest contribution to Magical knowledge. The insights we can gain into the nature of the Warp, the Winds, and Magic from studying whatever the Qhaysh Juice actually is might be both more inspirational to us, and our actual masterpiece (in the sense of our greatest work).

[X] Yes. Don't be unrealistic. The paper communicates the concept and construction of Mathilde's Mystical Matrix without inducing unconsciousness or migraines. That's a win. Take the win.

You know it makes sense. And Mathilde is sensible.

Paper is sent to Altdorf to be published, gain trait: Practical - Long exposure to scholarship has given her an appreciation for literally everything else. +1 Diplomacy, +1 Stewardship, +1 Martial, +1 Intrigue, -1 Learning.

[x] Plan fund-amentals of research
-[x] Trade Delegation: Convince Wilhelmina and Markus to partner your network with the EIC based on the value of market information.
-[x] In Wissenland, there are a number of techniques in use to derive saltpeter from urine. It would take a great deal more effort than selling to tanneries, but saltpeter could be exported to Nuln for fantastic profit, or used to start gunpowder production in Stirland.
-[x] Enchantment: You've finally got the equipment, now you've just got to unpack it all and set up your laboratory.
-[x] Qhaysh Skunkworks: It would take careful study to unlock the secrets of the liquid. It would take considerably less time to find out if it can be made to burn, or explode, or do something militarily useful.

The only thing that hurts more than the unexceptionalness of the paper you've produced is the idea of spending another minute on it.
Your thoughts to my thoughts, Mathilde.

I've been convinced that this is the correct option, but having to give up on this paper despite the work we put into it and the fact that if our rolls had been better we might have gotten a higher magic score which is more valuable than any other stat.

"If our rolls had been great, we might have gotten a nice trait" goes for pretty much everything, though. We've already got one nice +magic trait and we can sort of reliably get more by training more spells. Well, as reliable as anything magic-related ever is, at least. Probably there will be miscasts along the way and things will get Interesting.

I'm thinking Mutable Visage to shore up our Diplomacy (which is what I assume it translates to, in the original book it's a Fellowship buff), one of Shadowcloak/Shroud of Invisibility to stealth around, and Bewilder to cause distractions and mess up groups of enemies are particularly nice.

But those will have to be fit in with finishing Fitness Training so that turns into a trait, getting around to Enchantment, looking at the Bottles of Wisdom Juice, doing our job...

Sure we can get more magic from mastering tiers of spells but to actually reach to higher levels of magic we need traits otherwise we won't be able to get the stat high enough.

[X] Plan Singing King Hunt + Enchantment
-[X][Intel] Gossipmongers: Julia's previous attempt had no result but the enrichment of various hangers-on of the Flensburg courts. Perhaps this was just poor luck; perhaps she should try again. (NEW-ish)
-[X][Watch] In Wissenland, there are a number of techniques in use to derive saltpeter from urine. It would take a great deal more effort than selling to tanneries, but saltpeter could be exported to Nuln for fantastic profit, or used to start gunpowder production in Stirland.
-[X][Personal] Attach yourself to the army so you can join the hunt for the Singing King (specify which regiment to join, or general staff to avoid the thick of the fighting). (NEW-ish)

Joys of tactical voting. I don't like the plan at all but it is better than the current front-runner.
So, I have issues with this vote.

Julia failed extensively on Gossipmongers last turn (to the point we ended up -100g in the hole when we're already hurting for money), why do the exact same thing? Either it was enemy action, her own traits fucking her, or a bad roll. That means there's a 66% chance it's just going to happen again THIS turn.

Also, we don't have any particular talents at finding people, so far as I know. That means attaching ourself to a regiment searching for the Singing King is just as doomed at making a difference as our going to the front lines that one time was. Too much land to cover for one wizard to make a difference.

Well, not finding people in ghoul-riddled hills. In human society, I'd like to think we've got some skill.

We have an army searching, who can cover a lot more ground than us. We could give Van Hal an Alarm Chicken. Tell him the magic word to activate the spell and Ping us when they're closing in on the Singing King, we can be there in a day or two. Less, if we spend the time with the General Staff.

I mean, giving Van Hal an Alarm Chicken to pop in case he needs us is possibly the best use of that spell, as we can't ward our buried palace because of cats.

That would still require human infantry to keep up with a fleeing vampire for at least a day while Mathilde rides in to help. It might happen, but I kinda doubt it.

If anyone's going to catch the Singing King it'll probably be Asarnil.

Stirland Watch finances - can be chosen INSTEAD of a selection from the above.
[ ] Formalize and organize the payments people make for the Gong Farmers to perform their service, as well as having the Watch start enforcing existing laws against dumping human waste in the street or the Stir.
[ ] Currently, solid waste is sent by cart and wagon out to the fields for a pittance. It could instead be used to create market gardens along the banks of the Stir (hopefully downwind) and increase revenue and provide jobs for the desperate by growing a variety of cash crops.
[ ] Tanneries have a seemingly limitless demand for urine, which explains a lot about the smell. A bit of fragrant research would allow you to identify how much demand there is and how much of a profit you can wring from this.
[ ] In Wissenland, there are a number of techniques in use to derive saltpeter from urine. It would take a great deal more effort than selling to tanneries, but saltpeter could be exported to Nuln for fantastic profit, or used to start gunpowder production in Stirland.
We should probably look into these next turn considering the influx of veterans we just got for the Watch., and the fact that these options feel less controversial than most of the options for the Info Network Expenses.

It's more in case he has a stronghold of some kind, that needs time to arrange an assault. But yes, I'm am reminder of Boneys comment not to expect one Journeyman Wizard can make a difference to the performance of 30,000 soldiers.

Based on Jacks comments, we need to make a difference in the veteran watchmen lives soon- ideally this turn. It seems to me like they need to see some benefits from all our changes.

Downside of Stirland:
2. Stauch Traditionalists: Outside of extreme circumstances, the locals are unlikely to take well to changes without a lot of effort.
Jacks promises on our behalf- "trust me, things will improve soon":
Jack has mollified the worst of the grumblers, and though the mood of the Watch's long-term veterans is no better than it was they've been convinced to wait and see rather than reflexively pining for the nostalgia-tinted past.
What I take from this is that we need to show them some positives of our reforms soon. Jack effectively made that promise for us. This turn, or at latest the next, we need to make a positive difference to the Watch veterans- probably this:
[ ] Improve the training of the Watch, hiring trainers and dedicating paid time each week to sharpening skills.

Making them enforce Gong laws right now will hurt morale. Adding Roadwardens, expanding into new regions- IMO, none of that will mollify the veterans. Administrators... might. But it seems indirect, we'd probably have heard if they're having trouble getting paid.

The Watch is funded directly by Stirland, subsidised by gong farming. It's our spying finances that are in the toilet. Taking a few years to set up gunpowder production and using the un-diverted funds to improve their training or equipment will probably be too late.

@BoneyM As I understand it, we've been using the gong farming proceeds to offset the burdens of the expanded Watch on Stirlands treasury? Has that gone beyond what we are 'chartered' to draw- I.e. are we underspending what we're 'entitled' to, if you see what I mean?

Van Hal said use our judgement, and to expand the Watch. He'd not be opposed to paying for what he gets... I guess I'm asking if we've created enough scope for expanded training for the watchmen action to come out of the Watches budget, rather than our discretionary income? Or if not, what might let that be the case?

We have a decent paper. We can send it off for an overall +3 bonus to our abilities, which is a good thing even if Learning suffers. Mathilde is an Intrigue Advisor, not a reseach wizard. Please respect that.

I don't think there's meant to be any such thing as a non-research wizard in the setting. Being a wizard is a combination of incredibly dangerous, incredibly intellectual, and incredibly personal. Most things have to be researched personally to be used properly, to adapt even know spells to work for a given wizard's evolving mindset.

Any wizard has to pretty much focus as much as they can on being the best wizard they can, otherwise they rapidly become an ex-anything.

Mathilde is a wizard by profession. She's an Intrigue Adviser, basically, as a cross between a hobby and a source of experience to help her be a better (research) wizard, until her College assigns her to another job they think is more advantageous.

Beyond that, Practical is an absolutely appalling trait for any Wizard, except perhaps Amber ones, and maybe not even them. It's probably to get no trait rather than that. Grey Wizards are particularly unsuited for a practical traits, as mastery of Ulgu requires the rejection of pragmatism and practicality, and instead the keenest possible understanding of the boundary between truth and falsehood, of understanding and ignorance. This is despite and because of the temptations of the spells of the Shadow Lore for such things - for Ulgu is a thing of boundaries between two things. When being a wizard is all about scholarship, taking a trait that's all about her hating scholarship is a terrible idea.

People have a lot of points regarding the problems of chasing the perfect grade and how we're getting an honestly good trait out of the deal already. However, there is one part of the Practical trait that makes me a bit worried.

Practical - Long exposure to scholarship has given her an appreciation for literally everything else. +1 Diplomacy, +1 Stewardship, +1 Martial, +1 Intrigue, -1 Learning.

We got a lot of unknown Qhaysh Juice pouring out of our box and will most likely need to study undead relatively often in the future. Obtaining a dislike for academia already is not ideal. At least not if we want our learnings to be useful to people outside our immediate circle.

[X] No. Mathilde's Mystical Matrix is worthy of a paper of sublime profundity, that communicates the earthshaking possibilities of the spell with elegance.

i have been thinking Qhaysh Juice may end up with a weapon that very deadly to undead could be useful

Why? It's likely to be the opposite, as the presence of strong magic tends to strengthen the undead, and what Mathilde has called Qhaysh Juice probably has nothing to do with Qhaysh, as that's a spellcasting technique, not a substance, and this liquid seems to be a mixture of the compressed and do liquefied Winds that latter and perhaps even current (Gold) magisters use as one of the intermediate stages for making Powerstones. It would seem like it would be a fair battery for wizards (admittedly, particularly for high magic users) but it would also be incredibly useful for vampires as a source of the Winds for them to compress into True Dhar they can use for Necromancy.

What she's made seems like it would be absolutely incredibly valuable for canon Gold Mages, given how their enchanting works (they use their control of matter that Gold gives them to indirectly control materials have have absorbed other Winds, and forge them into magic items, so they could soak thematic materials in 'Qhaysh Juice' to make reagents for crafting rather than having to find naturally occuring ones).

i thought to turn it into a mana/fuel bomb that you can choose which wind it turns into a light bomb to destroy all undead and purifies the land itself ( good for tainted land), a fire bomb if you want a firestorm, metal to turn the enemy into gold that you can then use to pay your army, life wind to turn a barren area super fertile. well you get the point i hope
