The paper now does exactly what it is meant to do. If we had another couple of actions there would still be better things to spend them on than trying to turn it into poetry. Do we really want a trait of Too Busy With Rewrites to Make New Content?

From what I understand, all wizards in their free time are to expand the knowledge and ability of magic. This is something that takes learning. Additionally, traits are narratively important. Taking a trait that discourages academia is not a good idea when half of our professing is to research and write papers. Finally, I believe that actually casting spells requires a learning roll. Or at least spells we cannot cast reliably. I'm not to sure. Either way, having higher learning is probably a good idea, as miscast spells tend to be really, really, bad.

I guess that's true.

Still, I have a feeling that if they don't start calming down something is going to break eventually.

Wilhelmina is still the boss so nothing that bad is going to happen but they could still decide to disobey. Worst case scenario is that she gets assassinated and one of them takes over.

I think we should still talk to Wilhelmina about it. Either to cheer her up or convince her to sit her kids down and talk things over.

This project has long since passed "free time", turned into "main job" and is threatening to expand into "overtime job". Councilors normally spend 2-4 actions on their job, out of 6 in a normal turn. Of our last six actions, we spent 4 on the paper and a 5th doubling down on reading the reference books relevant to the paper.

No. You can read the full Articles of Imperial Magic in the relevant threadmarked lorepost. But the summary is that Wizards are not required or even expected to do that. The Articles say Wizards must be lawful and loyal to Sigmar's Empire, to their order heads, etc. render aid to the Empire and the Electors and in fighting undead and demons where appropriate, hunt down rogue magic-users, must not study necromancy or chaos magic.

Actually expanding the frontiers of knowledge is an optional bonus, not one of their standard duties. Articles of Imperial Magic:

The Colleges are free to study, document, practice, and experiment with the arcane forces of magic that are present in this world, provided they adhere to the restrictions laid down by Teclis of Ulthuan, keep the good of Sigmar's Holy Empire in their hearts and minds, and obey the Articles of this document.

We will have other opportunities to improve our learning. There are plenty of research projects and self improvement actions on our options list. The part of this project that improved our learning (so we're ending up with a net +1 remember) was when we studied something new, not when we ground out a rewrite. Getting our lab up and running gives us more chance to up our learning long term than spending two actions on the mere hope that ??? doesn't contain a malus.
 
I mean on a more personal level, I don't want to have to explain to Van Hal why we have so little to report on the espionage front without a better answer than "I got incredibly obsessed with writing a paper on an obscure branch of magical theory".

Dude is trusting Mathilde to do her job without close oversight, to the point where he actually encouraged her to stop asking for permission before she did these things, and I don't want him being disappointed in her.

Okay, you've got a point there. I won't change my vote, but I won't feel too bad if it doesn't win, either. Chaos gets people by degrees.

The descriptions of writing the paper hit too close to home, but going for merely adequate when we're pioneering an entirely new field of magical research just hurts my soul as a (would be) academic. Excellence is a habit and so on.

Academic writing is an act of communication. Honing our prose without reference to other people becomes guesswork after a certain point. To improve our skills we should publish then read the critiques and correspond/talk with wizards who try to learn the technique from our paper.
